Small side story: my fascination for the modern Mongol people began nearly two decades ago when I watched a TV documentary showing the outside of a Ger with not only a sattelite dish but solar panels as well. However, the surprise was in the Ger. There wasn´t only a television but a laptop too. Very few people in the world combine a traditional and a modern lifestyle with such a common sense as most of the modern Mongols do. I can only express my highest respect.

I think that, not having a lot of material possessions is freeing. When a person has too many things, they become a slave to those things. This is a great way to live. And it looks nice and cozy. I could be happy doing that.

You can romanticise but the reality is far from it. Imagine average night time temperature of -30C for 5 months of the year. No infrastructure or even toilets.

both "Yurt" and "Ger" are Mongol words. "Yurt" is a Russian corruption of the Mongol word "Urdu" (or Ordo, Ordon. modern Khalkha spelling is Ord) meaning dwelling, or palace, or camp. The language "Urdu" is from the same Mongol word as the language is said to have originated in the Mongol military camp. There is region in Inner Mongolia called "Ordos" which means "many Ordo", after the Eight White Ordon of Genghis Khan.

Additional info: the European word "horde" has linguistically spoken the same root. I don´t know when ior why it got it´s rather negative connection though.

I am not a linguist. But I think that Yurt is originated a Mongolian word Urts. Urts means tepee. Ancient time, probably 15-20 thousand years ago, our ancestors lived in Urts. Then after Mongols engaged in animal husbandry, they improved their urts/tepee to ger. If you examine ger closely, you would see it is an improved version of urts/tepee. Navaho and any other Mongolic origin Native American tribes did not bring ger to America, it means Mongols were living in urts/tepee before their departure.

The ideas of peace, humility and tranquility are awesome. (Maybe my ancestors were Asian. I am an American Indian of the Yaqui and Mescalero Apache tribes🤔).

couch has double use and is for mommy and daddy(one on the right). Left one is mostly for remaining people. If guests arrive, floor we be sleeping spot

Seems like they have most of the modern ammenities. I don't have a freezer myself. And nope...no video gaming consoles. Damn.. for nomads who move around all the time I guess they're more comfortable than me. And how do they get connections to electricity if they move around? Solar? What about water? I'm scratching my head here. I know they have cellphone coverage for sure, but that's wireless.

You go out from the Ger to do your business away few hundred meters, dogs will follow you once you done and you wanted to take a glimpse of your product it's already gone. Ecosystem simple.

Gers would make great homes for homeless people in the USA. They're more sanitary and look much nicer than tents and cardboard boxes. Ulan Bator has large neighbourhoods of ger camps on the outskirts of the city. Maybe that's the solution for places like San Francisco, L.A. and Miami.

@A Girl Has No Name I live in LA County. Giving homeless people a ger and relocating them to the desert might be the way to go. If nomadic Mongolians can live in a ger when it's -40 in winter then homeless addicts in California can live in them when it's 50 degrees in winter.
