I quit my last job because my boss expected me to work around the clock and all weekend. At my new job I voluntarily did some work at home and my boss told me not to anymore. I love my new job.

Nice. Good for you. It's good to hear of someone getting a good deal for once. I work in a union environment - we dictate the working hours via a contract that must be adhered to by law. It prevents anyone from stepping in and taking your job because you followed the rule (in fact - if the employer wants to not follow the rule it is a grievable offence that can cost them money. It's not perfect, but I get paid for being on call, and otherwise ignore work on MY off time.

It's not just about us being able to want to separate our work life and our social life, but actually being able to. Employers now have the ability to hire/fire at such a rate that if we didn't present ourselves as always being on the clock, we'd get replaced with someone who would be, and America has made it so hard for us to say no to overtime or working weekends, because everything has become more and more expensive and nothing is free.
@CamaroAmx
@CamaroAmx 8 лет назад
not to mention, employers have the ability to fire you for actions performed outside the workplace. it used to be just for criminal things, but now it could be for a Facebook post. some employers even ask for your Facebook, instagram or whatever account on the application.

Sort of, but Apple marketing trashology is a problem, we have to at least acknowledge that. I don't care if people prefer iOS or Android, personally I prefer FireOS but Fire Phone flopped so... Part of the issue is a "live-to-work" culture that has developed in much of the western world (esp. the US). Another issue is the lack of paid leave requirements in the US. Switzerland has the world's most productive workers, and employers are required to provide at least 28 days of paid vacation. This allows people to take a break and live, which also reduces stress. Americans don't get this, and we can see the disastrous effects of it (high rates of heart disease, circulatory failure, depression, anxiety). Another good idea (similar to the French law) would be to outright ban having employees work outside of the workplace outside of work hours (no emails, no being "on-call", no tele-working). This way we can encourage a "work-to-live" culture where Americans will be happier and less stressed, and therefore healthier.

I'm going to take 2 -4 weeks off and tour Europe next year, but I don't think business should be required to pay for time off. I think it's cool when they do, but I don't think it's fair to them.
@julianreed7
@julianreed7 8 лет назад
All great progressive concepts, but being realistic, we're at least 10-20 years away from this kind of stuff even being on the table in the US, let alone actually able to be put into law. It's been long since established in the US, Government and legislative protection is overwhelmingly reserved for corporations and people in power positions (Police, Politicians, etc). The heavily influential group who would have lobbyists on the front lines to keep this kind of stuff from even getting on the radar. It's a radical shift in ideology that would take a long time to even begin implementing. Americans for starters have to realize this is a major problem. We've been trained/indoctrinated to think our current expendable factory mentality is the only way to live and work. Massive shame and or job loss for deviating from this, in most cases.
@JakesyDude
@JakesyDude 8 лет назад
+DH1986 well the reason it would be paid is that if they're not gonna be paid, they will take less vacation. Most employers in Switzerland (my example) actually give more days than required. Of course vacation with job security will have to come first, since many people don't even have that.
@JakesyDude
@JakesyDude 8 лет назад
+julianreed7 that's why people like us have to do the groundwork like campaigning and voting for progressives in congress, as well as local offices. No president is gonna do it alone. Not with today's politics. Sometimes we kind of have to blame ourselves for not being involved enough because if we were actively involved in our government's process, holding them accountable, we see a lot more legislation that favors us. In the end, it's all about being reelected. That's also an unfortunate attitude to have, since it means they won't pass highly beneficial but unpopular legislation. Perhaps that would change with new people taking our current politicians' jobs.
@johnpieloio5313
@johnpieloio5313 8 лет назад
You're right. The only way to change this is to organize, volunteer, and vote for progressives that represent the people. Getting these two into Congress would be a good first step: www.grassrootspb.com/

France also has an 11% unemployment rate overall and a youth unemployment rate of 24% and unemployment rages over 50% in Muslim and African-majority neighborhoods, in large part because all the socialist policies and constant strikes make the country unable to create jobs. Considering how much of the French economy is dependent on tourism that will no doubt plummet with all of the terror attacks, and it's probably going to get a lot worse the next few years.
@familledelisle2086
@familledelisle2086 8 лет назад
I live in France, been living there for 15 years now. I am Canadian so I know what the stereotypes against the French are. What you saying is correct on the surface but you are missing some important facts: (1) French are the most productive workers in the EU, if not the world according to this 2009 study (www.businessinsider.com/are-the-french-the-most-productive-people-in-the-world-2009-8?IR=T) if you need a more recent analysis check this one out (www.theguardian.com/small-business-network/2015/jul/13/french-workers-more-productive-brits) (2) high unemployment does not have the same impact when you live in a socialist country. I'd rather be unemployed here then in the USA. Yes the unemployment rate is low in the USA, but how many people have to work 3 part time jobs to make ends meet ? (3) Look at the Employment-to-population ratio and you'll find that the French are at 64% while the US are at 67%.... so yeah, better in the USA, but the French still have paid maternity leave, free healthcare, free schools, 5 weeks vacations and a lot more that would blow your mind... all this BECAUSE they strike and kick and scream and don't let the rich get away with it. There is something to be learned here instead of spouting venom.

A genuinely interesting and non-partisan discussion. Growing up, I always thought the the guys with laptops and Blackberries at the resort simply liked their jobs. Consider this, too: Are the economic benefits of staying connected actually worth the loss of time for "life", both on an individual basis and as a whole country? There are many factors.

Thank you Bill for putting in such concise terms what has been my life philosophy. People should strive to work to live, not live to work. This is why we need candidates that support a living wage, one that adjusts annually with inflation. The second job I ever had was in a grocery store in which the manager stated plainly, whether on the clock or off for lunch, if I'm called to the floor or am in uniform grabbing my lunch, off the clock, I have to be ready to work even if I'm not getting paid for it. I ignored that advice and made sure to bring a second shirt every day to change into whenever I clocked out, but that was still how I was expected to conduct my job, even at times when I was off. I do not subscribe to this. My breaktime is one of the only things I hold sacred. Work is work, play is play. Doing one should automatically exclude the other. The guy that works across from me at my current job is one of those people who would work 16 hours a day if the job allowed it, which it does not. Why be a slave to your work? I had a job where I worked 12 hours a day, had an hour for lunch and took another hour to drive there. Doing the math, that's 12+ 1 for lunch, and 2 hours round trip, 15 hours each day outside the home. That first Friday I very nearly drove through a high school after blacking out at the wheel. I'll never work those hours again because it's simply unsafe to do so. I do not understand this expectation that we all should strive for 12 hour work days. Again, I will not be a slave to my work. I am a hard worker and the managers at my current job are clamoring to have me work their shift, but as a rule I do not work overtime unless it becomes mandatory. I have a home life and would like to continue having one, unmolested by middle management.

This is a very, very, real issue that he is addressing here. As a freelancer, I have been used to working off hours, on weekends, or during a vacation. But the real step into slavery was the advent of the mobile phone and then of mobile Internet. If you wondered why companies embraced these two technological developments with almost religious fervor, stop. It was not for efficiency's sake. It was for worker ownership's sake.

Bill makes some great points here...but I'll play the devil's advocate. I used to run my own business which all my friends were jealous of...but the reality was that I spent about 80-90 hours a week working to (barely) stay afloat. After 3 years of this with no vacation I gave it up and went back to a corporate job. What a refreshing change...and I make way more money. But I have a rule with my new job...right before I walk out the door to go home, I shut off my company phone, and I don't turn it on until I sit down at my desk the next morning. Many of my colleagues do not do this...they answer emails on their days off and don't know how to disconnect. Part of really disconnecting is making a conscious effort to find a job that makes this possible - IE not a business like I used to run or working for a company where this type of insanity is encouraged. My job isn't perfect and sometimes really stresses me out...but the fact that they allow for work/life balance and I only work 40 hours a week with the occasional project after hours (a few times a year at most) works well for me because I make the effort to keep my work and personal life separate. It is like the couple I saw in the hotel breakfast room when I was on vacation a while back...young, fit...yet both sitting there glued to their cellphones and barely talking to each other...they made a choice to live that way. Yeah work mostly sucks, our bosses are usually assholes and we all have bills to pay, but you can still carve out the lifestyle you want if you unplug yourself now and then to set aside time for something else.

I just watched a video "How to make a country rich" and while the title sounded like it will give some solid advice on how to advance a nation it was a painful description of industrialized capitalist nations today. You work as much as you can in hopes of getting rich and fear of being replaced, spend that money on some bullshit you don't need just to make a statement that you work hard, and when you reach the middle age and get depressed because you didn't achieve wealth you're prescribed a bunch of tranquilizers to keep you going.

I think it's all based on the fear that you won't be productive enough during your normal work hours so you try to constantly get a leg-up on others. Management loves this game because it squeezes maximum work out of you while paying you less. It's a more poisonous version of FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out).

I found that self employment is the easiest way to be on the job 24/7. It doesn't have to be, but if you ARE the company, leaving work aside is a rare and valuable skill.

My cousin's son didn't have an apartment for two or three years. He did literally live at work. He slept on a futon he rolled up in the morning and was the first one there. I suppose that wasn't the problem. The complete lack of social life was. He became depressed and eventually checked into a mental hospital at his mum's behest, the motive for the hospital was suicide watch. He was near catatonic. His boss never saw anything wrong: he was the *best* worker in the company.

The United States where corporations are people too. I was forced to go to the Walmart the other day because I can't afford to shop at the local mom and pop stores. I saw Exxon there in line buying some bologna from the deli. I said hey Exxon how are the kids? Did you guys ever recover from fucking up Alaska by letting that drunk captain drive that tanker?

I do not agree with the sentiment expressed here - this only happens if you do not live your life according to your highest values. The moment I started my own business was the last day I ever worked for I now do what I love and get paid handsomely for it. Do what you love and love what you do and you'll never need to work a day in your life.

NO NO NO. People who want to sell their souls to their employer should be rewarded for it. A decent compromise would be if one wants to opt out of the right to disconnect program they can, and will get a higher salary for it.

Lots of people won't believe this but a similar thing happens with high achieving high schoolers. They get owned by the colleges who want extremely smart and well rounded students and the teachers who assign a ton of homework and expect students to get it all done.

Most people with careers in politics are some form of business owner or high profile type of professional. So they want to make sure no law passes that will allow their slaves to escape for a few days or even a few hours or free time. And if you do manage to get free for a little bit, you have to be super cautious of how you live your own life. You can't be photographed drinking or caught doing anything that might "hurt the company image". Oh please, no one looks at your secretary and makes up their mind about your company image. It's about control and instilling fear so that you will give up everything you are to them so they can bleed you dry, then at 40 tell you that you are too old and fire you under the "Right to Work Law"... which means you have no right to work.

I understand that this situation has arisen in the last few years, but it didnt start out that way. Geek types, especially programming types are "obsessive" they will stay there forever. All the perqs are an attempt to give them something like lives in spite of the fact that they will not go home (if they even have homes). I worked (as a permatemp) at Microsoft from 1996 thru 2000, I loved all the perqs, (free drinks(milk to soda to orange juice), free fresh popcorn, infinite office supplies without hassle. I envied the blue badges with offices that were mini homes with couches, rugs, all the comforts of home. I loved the great meals, (really good meals in the cafeterias, seriously), i loved the catering when a push was on to finish some project. I had worked at universities where the only perqs were vending machines in the hallways, but we still pulled allnighters to get the job done. I understand that corporate america has taken advantage of the obsessive nature of the scientist/programmer and tried to spread that culture across the entire corporation. I remember a story from an early Microsoft Employee, he got a call from bill gates on a Sunday afternoon asking him why he wasnt there for the meeting. Bill simply assumed that everyone was as committed/obsessive as he was at that point (this was pre Melinda, pre child, pre normal)

the disconnect from the middle class and below keeps getting bigger and Bill perpetuates the idea that leaving work at home is a choice. It's not a choice, that's a fantasy, it's requisite. individual work loads have quadrupled within the lady 2 decades, yet the time to complete the work diminished. If we become less efficient, more of our jobs will be lost to cheaper labour.
