+Sthlmsyndrome To be fair Swedish news can be just as psycho as American news, usually with a socialist and authoritarian bent. I can't for the life of me understand why Swedes still subscribe to Aftonbladet for instance. There's right wing examples as well, like Fria Tider. Listening to some leftist Americans you'd think Europe is a more reasonable place but all we have is really just another brand of crazy.

I agree - that's why their popularity is so baffling. A surprising amount of people read Aftonbladet and the sort of slant Fria Tider has is gaining more traction as well. My point was that most countries seem to have their own Fox News. The guy I was replying to seemed to think Americans were somehow special in that regard. I'd also like to point out to potential American readers of this exchange that "liberal" in Sweden doesn't mean what it means to Americans. "Liberals" over here are liberals in the classical, Adam Smith sense. So essentially, the more liberal you are, the more right wing you are.

I can help you understand. Some folks are still mad they lost the civil war. Even though no one alive today actually experienced it. And similar to Nazi germany some very smart, evil people realized they could push an extremist agenda and make money from it. I'm talking about Rupert Murdoch and his creation of Fox News. TheHavocMiranda Bill O'Reilly is an anchor who works for the Fox News network. He recently lied about and exaggerated his accomplishments as a news reporter - including saying he reported in countries during war (which he did not do) and saying he was the reporter that went to interview a person who was being covered by the media during the time of President Kennedy's assasination (which has been proven false by evidence of a phone call he made during that time). On this show, Bill Maher is commenting on how crazy it is that Fox News is supporting Bill O'Reilly even though the facts prove him wrong - and also how crazy it is that the mainstream media is not tearing O'Reilly apart. The other people on the program are saying that no other news network is tearing O'Reilly apart because no other news network takes him seriously or thinks that Fox News is a legitimate news service.

I live in Ireland and there's no such thing as biased news. We gave RTE News, where the anchor says what happened, cuts to an analyst reading their piece on the event (again, just saying what happened in a bit more detail), then rinse and repeat. There's no back and forth between anchors where they discuss the issues, they leave the audience to do that themselves.

Fox will not get rid of him because they tout him as this messiah. And O'Reilly is a perfect role model for Fox, it's employees and it's viewers. Loud, rude, dumb, gulliable and one foot in the grave. Fox is just a rebranded televangical church. Facts are not important. Just like religion, lies are the "holy" words. O'Reilly should be held to journalistic standards since the claime were made at a time he was employed by actual news outlets. No one can make Fox look any worse than they already do. And I think O'Reilly has already discredited himself, no one needs to help him fail.

It should be illegal for most of the cable news networks to label what they broadcast as "news" - in reality it is perhaps 5% news** and 95% someone telling you what to think about the news. There should be a disclaimer required before the opening of shows like "The Factor" and a big black bar running across the top of the screen; *"THIS IS STRICTLY AN OPINION"* throughout - as well as on their actual news programs whenever someone is talking and not reporting. We shouldn't need shit like this, but people are way too fucking stupid. **=Note to conspiracy theorists: this doesn't mean I think the news itself isn't real, just that there's a very low ratio of news content vs. opinion content.

I see this as a larger problem within conservative America! Facts aren't as important as emotions. Truths aren't as relevant as lies. What actually happened isn't as crucial as what you would like to have happened. When Trump says anything, you basically know he's lying, but his supporters are comfortable with it, because the person they imagine him to be is more important to them than the person he actually is. O'Reilly was most likely not on the Falkland islands in 1982, given that the archipelago was in a state of war and still today, there are hardly any commercial flights to Port Stanley. But that doesn't matter, because as long as you claim you were there, your viewers will believe that you were there.

I stopped watching news in 2010. I hated the commercials so I was channel surfing for another news show. On one channel, this piper cub crashed because the luggage fell out of the plane, all 3 people were killed. Next channel, the luggage fell out when it crashed, 1 survived. the next channel, no mention of the luggage, all 3 survived and were transported to the hospital. I said, that's it, they're just making this shit up. And that was local news.

Bill O'Reilly isn't a news anchor, he is the anchor of an editorial program. Even by fox news's standards he would be on the outside of whatever sort of accountability they expect from their news anchors such as Shepard Smith. Comparing the 2 is the same as comparing WWE to the NFL. WWE is "sports entertainment", talking heads are news entertainment. Thats why the mainstream media doesn't care about what O'Reilly says.
