Jb you need to tell people if you are part-time towing. The gas truck is the truck for you... it doesn't matter how much noise the truck makes than a diesel. What matters is gas engines are much cheaper than diesel and less to maintain.. I have gas ⛽️ engine and it's more than enough for 16000 pounds as a part-time worrier like myself... One thing I did to greatly improve my performance was get a 5star tune for towing, with and without premium gas ⛽️ its all you need.. Plus, going down 5-7 % grades the engine will hold back the wt. Using cruise control and set the right gear.. Yes,, the truck will make a lot of noise and run about five thousand rpm's but it will hold, and it won't hurt the engine. Great job jb I like watching your show.

I get close to same mpg with my 22 L8T 3500 6 speed towing an 11K fifth wheel. It's been consistent 7 - 8 mpg most every time.

I have a 2024 chevy HD Crew cab 2500 with the 10850 GVW In the custom trim The 10 speed Allison branded transmission shifts flawless. The truck performs awesome for a gas engine.I tow around 8500 pounds including passengers and gear in the truck. The truck runs eighth gear most of the time at 2200 RPM at 70 miles an hour If it needs more power it will drop down to seventh gear running around 2700 RPM Then it will downshift to sixth gear and run 3200 RPM. The 10 speed is a game changer over the sixth speed when towing heavy the engine can stay in the power band better. Although the 10 speed transmission may not make the truck quicker unloaded it really helps towing. This engine was built for longevity Is not for maximum horse power in torque. As companies need reliable trucks for long-term use. Also GM trucks are a little cheaper on initial cost when buying new which is nice.

GM needs to offer more than a 3.73 for gearing. At least a 4.10 for gas and diesel to make it anymore competitive

I have a 2015 Chevy 2500 HD. It has 103000 and I pull 9k quite a bit. My brakes are only have worn out after 103k. Brakes are fine. Towing with gas truck is different. You just have to get used to it. Brakes will be fine.

I mean the thing is though, even if you tow everyday, gas trucks do the job fine. Especially if you work around 10-15 miles from home base. Diesel will suffer never getting a lot of highway use. Different applications. Diesel doesn’t just always win because it’s a diesel.

I run into issues with certain little towns we camp at don’t have diesel pumps. Especially when driving to our destination and stopping to get fuel we will find a bunch of stations with gas but no diesel. We’ve had a couple close calls for running out so I put a Titan 55 gallon tank on our truck last year.

JB I’d add the stillen cold air induction a S&B cold air intake and the JB4 Tuner you’d gain probably 50/60hp and 70/80 Tq at the tire and wake that sucker up it’s so electronicly restricted and governed. I did the the same to my 23 Silverado with the 4cyl turbo that little truck is a Rocket now.

I would bet in 2025 model year GM bumps up the HP and TQ of the L8T. It's already been proven very reliable so as a betting man, It wouldn't surprise me a bit for a 30/30 bump in hp and TQ for 2025. I would like to see 50/50 extra but I doubt that. Basically all they would have to do is make the ECU adjust for premium fuel when added. Or perhaps give it a larger throttle body. It wouldn't take much to bump it up. The base engine can handle it for sure, it just depends on the trade offs like gas mileage.

People did fine towing before you could get a diesel pickup, but the engines we had were low RPM engines. They did not freely rev up to 5500 RPM. Probably not much more than 4500 RPM max.

I'm a retired heavy equipment operator. I know what it's like trying to keep the momentum up with 250,000 lbs gross. It's nothing for my Cummins powered fourth gen to drop speed to a crawl with my 30 foot camper behind on the steepest grade. Just wish these modern day rookie so-called truckers learned the headlight flash.

Fueling a diesel pickup up at the diesel island is not an advantage. Usually all I can find is the big nozzle that I have to spend a half hour fueling up barely dribbling fuel in. Not fun at all when it is below zero. I would rather maneuver the car island just to find a diesel pump with the small nozzle.

I know you’re towing a lot of weight, but I’m failing disappointed in the trucks performance. I don’t think the 6.6 is any kind of upgrade from my 6.4 Hemi. Maybe gas is only a good choice under 10k lbs. I also can’t believe how hot that transmission gets. I’ve not had my ZF above 190 while towing.

Nice test. So 8th gear is 0.85:1 ratio in the 10 speed. 9th is 0.67:1 and 10th is 0.63:1. If that was a 6 speed truck you would have been in 5th gear which is also 0.85:1. I can’t say this enough but the 10 speed’s purpose was never fuel economy as compared to the 6 speed. It’s sole purpose is drivability. More power is always welcomed but when you’re used to a diesel and then want to switch to a gas truck I also can’t say this enough in that you have to temper your expectations. You have to remember this is an N/A small block engine getting compared to a turbo diesel. It can’t compare on power. But it can compete on fuel economy as you demonstrated. It will be within 2 mpg of the diesel on the same trip with the same trailer. Maybe even less. Last thing getting gas while towing is completely blown out of proportion. Not every fuel station has truck lanes and while that’s not a problem on interstates there’s plenty of times you can travel not even getting on an interstate. I can drive nearly 2 hours in any direction and not hit an interstate. So the getting gas is harder is the diesel fanboy version of the doing maintenance is more expensive gas fanboy argument. It’s a lot closer than you think with just doing oil and filter changes.

The 7.3 might have more power, but I wouldn't own one due to the cam delamination problems that have been more widely reported than some want to admit. No way I'm buying a truck where I might need to plan downtime for engine replacements.

I'll stick with diesel. The power in the mountains, easy fill ups at truck stops and better fuel mileage make up for the difference in price and maintenance. Diesels hold their value better and you get your money back on trade in. anyway...

Hey JB I have a 2020 Chevy 2500HD 6.6 L8t with the 6 speed! I’m looking into buying that exact camper the keystone cougar 368MBI! Was wondering your opinion on towing that camper with that truck! Max Tow rating says 16,800 camper is right at 13900 maxed out! So looking at 83% of my max towing capacity! I think I’ll be fine especially looking into putting 4.10 gears in it and getting a tow tune when my warranty is up!

I currently have a 2017 ram gas 2500 towing a 10k 34 ft camper. I’m looking to upgrade to a 2024 GMC Denali gas 3500 SRW with the 373 gears and 10 spd tranny. 17,800 tow capacity. The fifth wheel would be about 13,000 pounds dry. I only tow about a dozen times a year or less. I live in New England. I didn’t want to get a diesel because I was concerned about my driving habits as I only drive about 12 miles to get to work from home. I’ve read that the diesel wouldn’t get hot enough and would eventually go into limp mode because of the frequent short trips. my question is does anyone see any concerns with this potential set up and does anyone have experience towing with the Sierra 3500 gas srw?

After driving duramax/ecotec at home and powerstrokes/ tritons/vortec at work, It’s just too bad what emissions have done to these mighty diesels. However, I will never go back to a gasser. The constant winding out they do is answer enough. My wife and I are actually planning on upgrading her Tahoe to the 3.0 duramax soon…. If we can find one not marked up

Starting to wonder why anyone even gets these... if you get both bad mileage and poor power what are we doing? I can pull 7700 with my turbo v6 mercedes... instead of buying an even HUGER truck to haul an even HUGER rig, maybe I should just get a lighter rig.
