I owned an '05 2500 Duramax, a '16 2500 6.0 gasser, and now a '22 3500 6.6 6 speed. The '22 is by far the quickest, and consistently gets around 16 mpg mixed driving. Unbelievably quiet as well.

I agree with you. I had an 06 Duramax stock, and a gas 6.0 and now a 22 model 6.6 gas 2500hd. I own landscape company and the quickest empty truck is the new truck! Hope it holds up as well as my 6.0 truck which has 240k and gets driven by employees hard.

Great video. I'm getting 15.5 MPG mixed stop and go and highway driving and 9.4 towing our 32' 7k lbs travel trailer with my 2024. Not bad for a gasser. The Allison 10 speed makes all the difference in the world.

As a life long GM owner and always owning gassers I finally bought the diesel in my 2022 AT4HD. I will absolutely never go back to gas. I get better fuel economy and more power than I could ever need, exhaust brake keeps the truck and trailers brakes cool. It just finds a gear and pulls anything I want up any grade. I live in Utah as well so finding something that can safely pull some of the grades we have was super important to me. 10k is a lot but they hold their value better. Love the videos!

They also cost more over the years I. Maintenance and planned failures. Theyre epic trucks, just not the cheaper option unless you tow literally all the time. I've got two duramaxes, so I'm not bashing em. Just sayin

Did you forget about oil consumption, DEF, and effects winter has on the truck? What about the amazing regen that GMC has had problems with in bringing the truck into limp mode? Better mpgs that you pay for lol. Did you get the truck that has the value shutdown feature? Because GMC is having a horrible time with the engine having longevity with that system. Personal opinion, that front end sucks badly and shocking Ford and GMC can't make a good headlight cluster.

I've gone back to gas, 2022 3500 high country, 6.6 l, 6 speed trans. Had 20 years of diesel, 2 duramax's, 2004 and 2009 and one 2016 powerstroke and loved the trucks but in the 2016 the DEF was a nightmare with failed DEF sensors, Def heater, oxygen sensor limp mode being stranded pulling 37ft 12000 lb 5th wheel and 2000 lb boat. The 3500 High country does well the speed limit is 60 m/h in Saskatchewan , Canada. 8.35 mpg in wind 9.87 mpg 10 m/h wind. The only thing I do miss is the exhaust break but that is a relearn with the gas truck. No more Regen required Everytime I pulled into my drive way or DEF emission problems. Not sure if this is possible but once I put 10k miles on the truck seems to have come alive quicker and pulls loads better. You will always have people question gas capabilities I don't anymore and the gas trucks will get more power and torque in the future. Videos done well and honestly to the point, keep them coming

Thats not bad. My 2007 5.3L 1500 gets about that in the city. Obviously this is a lot newer truck, but its also much bigger. My 1500 is a very similar size to a jeep gladiator.

Compare the 6.6 gas with the older 6.0 HD ratings and its good power. I used to have an 05 6.0 HD gas and it would get 11-12 mpg mixed empty driving and it was slow. The 2005 HD was way lighter / lower tow rated than todays model. For the new truck to beat it on power, capability, and MPG is really good.

14.7 mpg is great for gasser 3500. The 2013 2500 & 2016 2500 GMC’s I had never got more than 11.4 mpg when not towing. You’re getting almost 15mpg in a 3500 that is great mpg not towing brother. It is meant to tow and haul not drag. Enjoyed the mpg review.

@@jl4e23 Its that 2" lift. My 2020 RST CC 5.3, I get 18mpg average all day. My best was 26.3 on a 50 mile trip at 55mph.

I went and looked at a 2023 Ram 2500 and it was nice until I looked at the sunroof shade and it was pathetically cheap and flimsy- it really blew my mind that they’d skimp out on that of all things.

JB I have a 2023 Silverado with the 6.2 L and they highly recommend 91 or higher. I put 93 octane in it and people tell me it will run fine on 87. I’m not willing to take that chance I’m not sure what you think since you review a lot of these trucks.

My allison 6sp will hit 235 on the hills... sometimes more.. when I have 20K lbs of 5th wheel behind it. 185 is nothing. It's basically matching coolant temp which is fairly normal after the truck has been fully warmed up driving.

Unless I was consistently towing very heavy. I would be hard pressed to buy a new diesel. The gas engines are solid. The new 6.6 gas is a big upgrade from the 6.0 gas. Obviously with the weight of the truck, the mpg will never be good. The diesels do not do well unless they are run hard and up to operating temps. Otherwise the dpf and egr system has issues. The gasser getting the Allison behind it is a game changer. Well done review.

Nice video. That’s a pretty reasonable fuel mileage expectation considering the conditions you were in and the fact guy were cruising on 80 mph for awhile lol. Also my experience with the computer is that it’s dead on if you get fuel the same day. It gets off a little bit over the course of a week or so especially if the driving conditions change. Like for example I was on 8.1 when I got home from the races and now I’m at 10.5 or something after driving a couple days even though my last 50 mile average is around 15 lol. I’d like to hear the mrs’s take on the new truck, especially compared to the 2023. The online hate is a real thing because that’s not what happens in the real world. Also, your 0-30 improved that time a little. I’m a little more convinced now that it’s just a combination of the extra drag from the dual alternators and the fact that you’re loaded with every option. And there is a possibility the 91 octane is hurting your performance. You have less air at the higher elevation and the higher octane fuel is slightly harder to combust so there is a chance you are losing a little power. You may have your air to fuel mix off by doing this more so than normal that the elevation is causing. Again, pure speculation on my part because there’s a lot more to it then just what I said. And naturally you’re going to be creating a lean condition being at a higher elevation so it stands to reason you need more octane to avoid detonation but there also why the higher elevation parts of the country have 85 octane as an option for regular fuel. Personally I’d just run 87 in it.

I’m actually happy with this MPG but when it was newer, it was pretty bad… I recorded 10.8 on the trip computer on the way home from SLC a few times… I was surprised by 0-30 when I edited the footage but it seems like it loses steam the more you accelerate. The octane is not the issue, maybe if I was running 93 I could see your point but 93 isn’t available here 👍🏾

@@JB_WhoWork that’s why maybe the octane is an issue since 93 is not available. Everything is lowered down octane wise due to the elevation. It has to do with the air density. Either way I’m not sure about it. Weight is where the speed is at in drag racing but like we have said your truck is at most 300-500 pounds heavier than a typical optioned gas truck. Now at a 2500 pound race car, losing or gaining 500 pound is a lot. But a 7000+ pound truck I don’t think it’s all that big a deal. And regardless, having the extra weight matters less the higher up in speed you go and once you’re already moving. But something is definitely holding it back between 30 and 60. The 1/4 mile time wasn’t even that terrible, especially considering the 1/8th mile time.

Air n fuel ratio will be ecm controlled, going up a grade will be recognized by the ecm and adjusted accordingly, better fuel is NEVER a disadvantage, off topic but recently bought a Suzuki atv and book says 87 octane, runs like a bag of shit , bumped to 91 octane and you would think its a completely different bike, very smooth and throttle response is night and day. You can actually see and hear the fuel map changing as the ecm makes the required adjustments. The dealer says there is a software update that will remap for better 87 octane results.

@@panthermartin7784 that’s all of true about the computer figuring out the fuel and air mixes. My point is though higher octane fuel is harder to combust and with that In combination with the higher elevation having less air density may be exaggerating this. I’d run 87 and see. Probably won’t make enough of a difference to notice though. I think the real “problem” is the dual alternators. And it’s honestly not a problem so much as he’s just use to a turbo diesel at elevation and now he has an NA gas engine.

@@JB_WhoWork your are 100% wrong. higher octane means less volatility, and this is meant for engines with higher compression so that the fuel doesn't ignite too early in the cycle . Lower octane fuel is more volatile and is meant for engines where compression rates are lower, so that the ignition in the cycle doesn't occur too early. If fuel octane is too low for a given compression ratio, the fuel prematurely and spontaneously ignites too early and the fuel charge EXPLODES rather than BURNS resulting in incomplete combustion. The net effect is a loss in power and possible engine damage. The operator hears an audible "knock" or "ping", referred to as detonation. Detonation may vary from a faint noise on light acceleration to a constant, deep hammering noise while driving at a constant speed. Improper timing adjustments, vacuum leaks, or excessively lean fuel mixtures may also cause detonation. In short; put what the manufacturer recommends, you are shortening your engines life if you don't. if you ever took any schooling about mechanics you would know this fact.

Higher octain fuel is harder to burn, that is the reason it was used in high compression engines in the past, it prevented detonation(premature ignition in the cylinders which was known as engine knock). Todays computer controlled engines are much better at adjusting the ignition advance than the old mechanical systems they replaced which is why more powerful engines today can run on 87 octain.

Dude, how is 401 HP not enough? - I remember when you could get a 250 straight six in a 2500… we thought the 210-hp 454 smog motor was a tow monster- and a turbo 400 transmission you had to rebuild every 75,000 miles if you worked it.

That time isn’t now. I had a beautiful low mile 1997 F350 with a manual shift and 7.5L 460 gasser that all you Uncle Ricos cream your shorts over. It was an absolute slug that wouldn’t pull a wet string out of a wildcat’s ass…I don’t want that performance ever again.

In turms of deleteing one tou should check if your state does emissions checks (also known as smog checks) and two if you delete the egr doesn't have to come out you can shut that valve permanently and never have to worry about it the dpf and the def yeah that has to go but i. Turms of the 2024 model year their are not any tuners avalibke yet it may be a while until that happens especially since gm did the swap on the cpu it is now a flobal be smart computer so tuning is gonna be a lot diefferent then previous years

My 2 cents is perhaps putting premium gas is causing worse acceleration. I've seen this happen in small engines...basically higher octane fuel causes more heat build up, computer sees this and scales things back. Put regular 87 into it as the manual states... Either way the gas is 20-30% less efficient than diesel, which cost 10-15% more depending on location, so it's like a 10% cost savings that would take forever to recoup since that cost +10k if you look at it that way, which IMO isn't a good perspective. A diesel truck can more comfortably and safely tow, has longer range, and you'll get most of your money back on resale. Everyone will agree a diesel truck is better and the only complaints are paying more upfront and dealing with the emissions crap. There is a strong argument for this gas truck...on paper, this 6.6 gas engine will tow everyone most non-commercial users need. Put it into a basic regular cab few options work truck, it should be able to handle moving 15k even better. IMO most people who buy these high option 4 door short bed trucks are mostly driving it around empty like an open back SUV and doing so to meet a need to occasionally tow. The gas engine would handle that just fine...yes it's not going to win 0-60 runs but who the heck cares as no truck is made for that. You drive it like a big heavy duty truck...not a SUV, not a sedan, not a sports car, not even as a full size truck. So stupid seeing people tailgating and driving these trucks around as if they're normal cars.

May I offer a few of my thoughts related to the 6.6 gas? I have a 2022 Chevy 2500 HD. Crew cab. Short bed & Z71 package. 6 speed 3.73 gears. -my truck felt sluggish & the transmission was a bit rough. After about 2k miles it began to run & shift better. -401 hp & 460 torque are respectable numbers. Not to far off the diesel pickups of 10 years ago. -Comparing modern HD gas vs Diesel is not a fair comparison. Apples & Oranges. -If you tow 15,000# or less and it’s 3-4 times a month then a HD gas might be for you. -Living in North Texas, the altitude is not an issue. My gasser pulled about 12,500# (loaded trailer) with ease. -IMHO, you buy a HD truck to haul & pull. Therefore getting the job done safely & reliably trumps 0-60 runs. -i run 87 / Regular in my truck and it does fine. Just my opinion. Enjoy your videos. I think you will be more comfortable with the gas engine when it has a few more miles on it.

10th gear is .63, that’s too damn tall for a gas engine in a 7300 lb. truck. That is why the 10 speed mpg is no better than the 6 speed. The only time it stays in 10th is unloaded on flat road before it has to downshift to the same .67 ratio the 6speed OD ratio is. A 4.10 gear should’ve been mated to the 10 speed.

@@rygi23 then it would get worse fuel mileage because 4.10x0.63= 2.583 for a final drive ratio. The 3.73 is 2.4991 in 6th gear on a 6 speed and 9th gear on the 10 speed. Similar for sure but with a 4.10 in 10th gear at 2000 rpm you’d be going 78.35 mph. The 3.73 in 9th is going 80.98. So over 2.5 mph more speed even in 9th gear to do the same speed with a 4.10 you’d have to turn another 75 rpm. Again, not much but it would be more. The 4.10 and especially the 4.30 that Ford offers is totally unnecessary for most people and most conditions with the 10 speed auto. That’s why they have 10 ratios in the transmission to choose from so you don’t have to have such short rear gearing.

You're also at 5000+ feet. That truck is down at least 15% from what most people will experience. 400-15%=340hp.

This octane issue doesn't seem to want to go away. Is there any merritt here. I do know as a dirt biker i use 93 octane near sea level and 85 octane when at 6000ft and above. I do not feel any power loss at elevation when doing this. If somone out there has any science behind this, we can finally lay this to bed....

@@jl4e23he higher rear pressure is intended for running its max gcvwr/gvwr. If you run 80 psi empty you will wear the center out of the rear tires with enough miles.

Yeah, you want to take that truck in for service I would up the transmission about 10,000 more heavier to transmission

Same MPG as the 6 speed. Should’ve mated 4.10 gear with the 10 speed to overcome .63 10th gear ratio that is too damn tall. Gas engines in a 7300 lb truck need to breath and spin free not be under load.

I test drove one of these gassers. They just dont compare at all to the diesel power and the driving experience. Better fuel economy in the diesel. better resale. If you do your own services on the diesel its very minimal extra cost, especially when you consider the extra mileage you get out each oil service. I'll be hard pressed to ever get another gassser. Appreciate the videos!

By do your on services you referring to oil change, etc or repairs? Oil changes on your own seems like it would definitely cut down on some cost. I’m torn on diesel Vs gas. Not a need but a want. Emissions constraints seem to be the downfall of diesels though

I’m sorry but I would I challenge you to show data where putting 91 in it makes it perform any better than 87. If you understand octane, you would understand that there is zero benefit to running higher than recommended octane. Most people ignore this and put what they want in it and that’s their prerogative but at the end of the day it’s fact

If he has the throttle wide open, pedal commander won't do anything. Still seems weird. He gets to 30 pretty quick and then it struggles to go from 30-60. I'd be kind of surprised if the elevation is taking a full 2-3 seconds off his time, but I guess it's possible.

@@SliderFury1 exactly. The 30-60 is really slow it seems. And in this instance his 0-30 was a lot better than the last two runs. I know his truck is heavier than most gas trucks but it’s not that much heavier and the weight becomes less of an issue with the more speed you are making. I think some of its the dual alternators and some of it is the elevation too. But it sure seems like something is holding it back between 30-60.

When we buy a heavy duty truck do we really care about 0-60 times? Real world MPG: My 2024 HD 2500 Silverado just reached 1600 miles; mostly short trips, no towing but often with a load of firewood. Trip computer indicates12.5mpg average with best 50 miles at 16.6. Sort of what I expected and I didn't need 20 minutes to watch this guy ramble on. Gas versus diesel my take: If you average 4mpg better overall with the diesel and it costs $1 more per gallon, as it does where I live, 80,000 miles (give or take) is necessary with the diesel to break even with fuel cost not including DEF or higher maintenance costs and now we have to make up the $9400 premium for the engine. I tow boats with a company truck (diesel) and I love the torque but for my personal vehicle I just can not justify the cost difference.

Those 6.6 gas trucks are dogs. Chevy should offer a steeper rear end gear for those trucks too. That would help.

Put 65k miles on a L8T wide open throttle a lot 11mpg and ram only 87. Never had an issue. Also no issue with your truck they are very slow.

Oh my god this is such a stupid stupid thing there’s really people out there putting premium fuel in a work truck 6.6 L gas motor? Bro just like I said, in the last video you made about running ethanol, free fuel and high octane fuel it does nothing and in Laymans terms ethanol free fuel is why boaters use it because it is in a motor that is in water all the time and ethanol attracts moisture and won’t break down plastic parts, like fuel with ethanol would do in an inboard and outboard motor. 91 and 93, octane etc. 94 octane if your local Sunoco station has it does absolutely nothing unless you have a big block high compression motor or forced induction motor or turbo charged or it has a massive Kenny Bell supercharger on it like my 13 GT500 running high octane fuel in your work truck does absolutely nothing and in the long term could actually damage your motor because your motor was not designed for that like the Corvette is, for example. High octane fuel is needed. When you mess with timing compression detonation forced induction. Other than that the only reason you would run high octane fuel. For example, in an older motor would be for engine, knock, and noise. Your local mechanic may tell you say you have a 98 cutlass and it has a little knock to it they’ll tell you run 93 in it Because it has a detonation issue or a timing issue and it would limp you along temporarily
