Realistic Guns for Cheap! 

Call or email your neighbors and tell them you will be filming, don't be alarmed if there is an armed man in my lawn.

Or call local police department and tell them you will be using realistic Gun props for your movie

I know this was six years ago, but try to let everyone know with a letter/email at least a week before and maybe talk to the police beforehand as well AND put up signs on when youre filming

Film Riot Oh? But you see, then they would most likely try to escape. Did I not specify what sorts of ideas I had? Joking, of course, just had to make the joke with that reply :) The police aren't too high-alert where I live/shoot, and there aren't that many people around, but I will inform them if I don't think it's obvious that we're filming.

Film Riot Good call, the tragic news about the 12 year old playing with a fake gun in the park and being shot by the cops because they could not tell if it was real or fake (no fake indicators). I guess the rule / message here is that if you are making these weapons look real, the police will think they are real and in the States that might mean an armed response before dialogue. So if filming outdoors in a public location let someone know or make is VERY clear you are FILMING a scene.

Andy001z Wow, that's just awful. How can anybody who is considered sane think that was the right call? Even in the extremely unlikely case that the kid would hit somebody IF it was a real gun, for a kid to hit an adult is much better, both statistically and morally, than the other way around. I feel truly sorry for you, having such a paranoid police force. Of course it's not as easy as saying that, there have been a lot of tragedies without the police being there, which has to do with sociological conditions. I won't try to push my views onto anybody, but I do believe there will be fewer such cases with a less capitalist system. Then again, 22nd July here in Norway proved that some people have issues, caused by personal matters nobody could control...

But Counter Strike beats them both.

The gun Emily is using looks a lot like a $6 gun that can be found at wal-mart. I think the youtuber Knoptop did a review on this same gun a while back. This sounds like a gun similar to what you are describing.

Yeah the 15 buck pistol is a Beretta. Its in Australia too but the gunfire sounds like a 50 cal. Still pretty cool. They also have a double-barrel shotgun

SuperSamStuff, I don't know if this will help. But my brother and I are working on a short film with swords in it and we intentionally made them weird, space age swords so that the audience had nothing real to compare it too. We can sell the props as real swords to the audience without making them realistic. We haven't begun filming yet so I don't know if this will actually work but it's just a thought I had.

Yes, you should notify the police/contact your local film commission to find out permits you need. Of course, they live in Texas, which is pretty... big on guns. Even so, for a shoot in public in Texas, you should find out what permissions you need.

Paul Ocone Thanks for your reply. I'm in the UK where there is very strict gun control - not even our police routinely carry guns, so if we wanted to do a gun scene we would have to make completely sure all the appropriate authorities, neighbours and passers by knew what was going on.

I think Nerf guns is good for acting I seen a hell lot of PDK films , I love it. Laser Tag guns can be suitable for acting too all gotta do is modify the sound effect.

I understand how, in the heat of production, Ry might have missed this. So, let me just add another voice saying, it is definitely worth emphasizing this point. In fact, it may be worth an episode. Everybody, EV-ER-Y-BO-DYYYY who has ever worked with these sorts of props has a story about how police, passerby's and other such fun folk were left out of the loop, and how mayhem ensued. Those cheesy orange tips on toy guns are there for a reason. If you modify them or take them off, it can prove both dangerous and expensive if you are not very, very careful. And, as I already suggested, everyone always thinks they have taken enough precautions. And everybody ends up wishing they had taken more precautions, eventually.

It is generally required for manufacturers of airsoft or novelty guns to be shipped with an orange or red tip, but there are no requirements to keep them that way for the consumer, or at least it is that way here in Texas (which is where they live). Also, they have said numerous times to warn or inform others in your area that you are handling fake weapons, and to also inform your local law enforcement.

Actually it's only illegal to sell them without the tip, you can remove them at your own discretion
