Obviously many techniques and effects are not obvious to someone without experience (like myself), but the main reason this becomes believable once the main sections are done is to confirm this is how everyone works, not to go from little to perfection in a few strokes, but to adjust and readjust many many times each time making a small change until you get to a point where the tiny detail that is missing can be seen and corrected. It's very nice to see this come together. Thanks. [I'm skeptical of impressive feats I see on youtube, generally, because digital wizardry can be used to fake a lot of things. I imagine how I might be faking the presentation. Overall, this video seems believable to me. That said there was one section that kept me skeptical with this video, around the 6:00 mark when the lips go from purple and shaped one way to much closer to actual lips without any work showing. Maybe you took a long break there and the room lighting/camera changed enough. Maybe you just got rid of too many frames.]

C M, contrary to popular belief, I think that you never going too far when you paint. The longer it takes, the better the painting will be. But at some point, you just want to move on to another subject. It is not uncommon for me to touch up my paintings several years after "finishing" them. Leonardo da Vinci said: "Art is never finished, only abandoned."

Polysticutus, it's probably a combination of several things. A facility to draw as a child, an interest, a challenge to take up, you don't see the time passing. Then, to broaden the horizons, the technique must be mastered. Reading about painting techniques, watching painting videos, experimenting different approaches, practicing for a few hours every day, gaining experience. As far as female subjects are concerned, in my case, It's probably a form of projection. In a way, we would all have liked to be a very "GLAMOUR" woman, live by the sea like"IBIZA" or be a great musician like in"SOLO". Moreover, each subject presents a technical challenge. Whether it is a hair, a piece of clothing, a decoration, because you have to stay motivated until the end of the painting, which requires several weeks of work...

It dosn't matter

mojizrehman, I use linseed oil at different stages of my process. I add one drop per nut of color on the palette from the second layer of paint to respect the "Fat over Lean" rule. I add an extra drop to each layer. As I approach the final stage, I oil the entire canvas to saturate the colors. I wipe off the excess and I finish my painting. When it is dry to the touch, I apply several thin layers of retouching varnish to protect the painting. I hope this will help you. Happy painting!
