Realistic stereo & cartridge replacement in a BSR turntable (crappy modern cartridges)

Here's the BSR record changer out of the Realistic Clarinette 91 all-in-one stereo. The original Tetrad cartridge had an intermittent channel; but, otherwise sounded fine and did not skip. The two current production Pfanstiehl/Tetrad knock-off cartridges both sound distorted and skip badly on records that are heavily modulated with a lot of bass, with one cartridge being worse than the other. I've not had the best of luck with these current Pfanstiehl cartridges and I'm about done with them. It's really sad that these current production ceramic cartridges are no better than they are. I guess they figure that most of them are going in stereos owned by 90 year old ladies who are hard of hearing and won't notice the lousy sound quality when playing their worn out 101 strings LP's.

In fact a particular BSR model made in 1984 is the father of the actual turntables made for the crosleys

Now, if I can just find a cartridge that does not sound distorted and skip all over the place.

I have a feeling that before we know it we'll be making up networks and putting magnetic jukebox carts on these (if they'll fit in the headshell.) The current production ceramic carts aren't very promising.

As much as I like the idea of using these older turntables the skipping drives me crazy. I bit the bullet and bought an AT 120lp three speed with the proper cartridge (mono cart for early mono 45s and lps, and a modern AT 75 cart for stereo) and the skipping is no more. I'll still fix these types up but sell with the warning that skipping may be a problem. In other words, AS IS. :)

Yes and use a soldering iron to heat the center bearing. Don't use too much heat or you may damage the plastic platter (if yours uses a plastic platter).

Got a Fisher MC-510 turntable unit for free. It turns on but the sound fades and there's a buzzing sound/short either in the volume control or equalizer. Also the platter is sluggish. I can get it to play but it slows and stops midway through the record. When I remove the platter there's black gunk that gets everywhere. It has a diamond needle in very good shape. Should I chuck or keep. I hear the MC-510 is rare. Something tells me not to get rid of it. Any advice. Thanks.

BSR stopped making 3 speed changers in the late 70s and finally disapeared in the early 1990s I have just thown out two plastic BSR's that I removed from my Linear tornado disco console but they were made in taiwan in 1987 the last 2 speed changer I've seen was fitted in to a Fidelity UA10 S (also known as a shitter) from 1980 ish BSR did stamp Better sound reproduction on some mid to late 60s changers (better then what??)

This video reminded me of repairing a BSR with a plug /slide in head shell, it was a late 70s model, it had bad contacts on the head shell contacts, I tried to clean the contacts with contact cleaner spray, this worked fine, but the next day the head shell was a melted blob, whatever cheap plastic BSR used did not mix with contact cleaner ;-). GREAT video many thanks indeed. always enjoy.

One other possibility is dried grease or lack of oil at the tone arm pivot. This would cause the tone arm to track with a pull to the right. Short of complete disassembly of the lower mechanism you might try using a Q-tip of oil from the top. If you must disassemble the mechanism I suggest getting a fishing tackle box to put the parts in as you take them off. If you number the bins at least you'll know the order they came off.

I have a SONY HP-258 System with a BSR C141R1 Turntable I literally found that someone had put on the curb with a bunch of trash for bulk trash pick up. I snatched it up of course. All it needed was a little cleaning and grease, mechanically it works perfect and looks almost new. The left channel is half as loud as the right, but it still sounds good. But I sure wish I knew where to find a replacement cartridge, as I'm pretty sure that's the reason for the low channel volume.

The skipping with the replacement cartridge is probably because the "new" Tetrad cartridge is probably NOS that's been sitting in a warehouse for 20+ years, and the stylus suspension has stiffened up with age and become less compliant.

Good job man, always love your informative videos. I just manged to pick up an old Realistic Clarinette 102 all in one stereo system with, cassette, 8-track and a BSR record changer/turntable for nothing. The turntable with even the original so-called cheaper ceramic cartridge works just fine and the only real problem is that it spins a little to fast. I was actually quite surprised it wasn't seized up. The whole mechanism works perfectly! It came with a replacement stylus's and cartridge as well.

There's a screw at the underneath rear of the tonearm right near the wires to have to adjust. You may have to turn it clockwise or counterclockwise slightly. It's similar to the stylus pressure adjustment screw in the front of the tonearm.

You should check the make of cartridge, and try to match it up @ voice of music.com to see if its still being made. If its a ceramic or crystal cartridge, you may be shit-outta-luck, and purchase an inexpensive Pickering magnetic cartridge from e-bay and take it from there, since many Realistic all in one systems use Shure cartridges in their original OEM.

Check eBay, bud. They put BSR changers in almost everything back in the day. There's almost always at least one or two up for auction. You might get some static from the 'audiophiles', but they aren't nearly as bad as a lot of snobs think they are. And they are reliable as hell.

According to what I've seen BSR continued to make 2-speed changers after '85, but cheapened it even more. This time they eliminated the squared base and everything else was 99% plastic.

@nuttyprofessor
@nuttyprofessor 10 лет назад
***** I've used an emery board on the outer edge of BSR idler wheels as well. They work equally good as fine sandpaper. Once I did that, I applied Rawn rubber cleaner to the whole idler wheel (top, side, bottom) and let the stuff absorb/penetrate the wheel for 15-20 mins. Worse case scenario, you can send your old idler wheel to thevoiceofmusic.com for a newly rebuilt one.

Did I hear correctly? The 'short' cantilever stylus produces a higher output voltage? If so, I'm assuming it would be because it flexes the crystal in the cartridge more than the long cantilever, correct? It would seem to imply that the longer cantilever, although it has a lower voltage, would cause less wear on the record.
@jcmolero71

yes, just look the Zenith variants, which used the longer cantilevers and used only 2 grams of vtf, the results were awesome

Dumb question, but did cleaning the cycling gear restore the auto function of the record player? In the part one video, neither the reject switch nor the auto return function worked and now work in this video.
@nuttyprofessor
@nuttyprofessor 10 лет назад
Yes, once you clean off the old grease on the cycling gear and re-lube the inner track with white lithium grease. Don't forget to remove the trip pawl, clean off old grease on it, and re-lube that piece with 3-in-1 oil and the post it stays on. Also, you need to remove your thrust bearings/washers from the base of the spindle. Clean and remove all of the old grease inside and out, re-lube the entire bearing assembly with white lithium grease, and clean off all old grease by the cycling gear post and spindle post. When re-installing the cycling gear when you pull switch to AUTO, make sure the trip lever extends directly over the thrust bearing/washer assembly or else the platter gear will miss the trip lever and not engage the cycling gear. Turn the gear slightly clockwise til the lever is in the said position.

Interestingly in '80 or so I saw a BSR changer identical to the one in my Emerson table top stereo I got for Christmas '78 (age 13) and it seemed to have even the same Tetrad ceramic cartridge but way better frequency response.
@Nivicoman
@Nivicoman 9 лет назад
The late 60s JVC and Panasonic cartridges were fairly compliant unlike some good sounding Crystal cartridges with the stylus cantilevers lacking any rubber on the end that is screwed down. Those had to have been pretty stiff and hard on any record.

***** Would you mind pointing me in the right direction for upgrading a BSR (Realistic Clarinette 92) from the ceramic cartridge to a magnetic one? I like my vintage all in one changer despite it being a lower end model, but I would like to reduce the tracking weight of the arm by switching to magnetic to preserve my records from unnecessary wear. What do you mean by upgrading to the tubular tone arm? Is that straight forward to do? I also know that I'll need an amp as the volume will reduce, but will I need to change anything with the wiring inside the console if I make this switch to magnetic?
