realistic + unaesthetic grad school vlog | writing grants and cleaning house
Hello friends! If you are new here, my name is Katherine and I am a third year PhD candidate studying history at the Ohio State University! I am a social historian of war, and my area of focus is France + Australia during WWI.

Please don’t apologize or feel self-conscious about not being one of the “aesthetic” lifestyle grad student vloggers! I speak for so many when I say we prefer a realistic vlogger than one who spends hours trying to portray an artificial aesthetic lifestyle (not to mention how those aesthetic vloggers galvanize capitalistic norms in which success is dependent on material items). Also, spending that much time on an aesthetic necessarily means less on your research, which is far more important than an all white and neutral color scheme for your Christmas ornaments and mugs or shots of artistically stirring an iced coffee.

Ahh thanks! I appreciate your words. I know everyone seeks out different sides of youtube, but it's a good reminder of why I do what I do. Thanks for watching!

Hey Katherine! I am here for your realistic vlogs that always strike a chord with my own journey as a PhD student. Your work ethic is inspiring rather than intimidating. After I watch your videos, I strive to be more consistent with my research rather than feeling guilty or ‘good-for-nothing’. And you are right, I, as a subscriber of this channel, do come to see a realistic vlog which seems familiar and helps get out of my comfort zone. All the best for those grant applications and content creation. Your videos are wonderful!

I agree! Not to mention those vloggers with the “work ethic” that appears intimidating is likely faked for the camera or they are slacking in other areas. There is no way someone can be an aesthetic lifestyle girl, run businesses, AND be on top of a PhD program! 🤷‍♀️

Your vlogs are not unaesthetic but realistic! Finally, someone we can relate to and that is why I love watching your videos. I am also really impressed with your French, I mean I don't understand a word but it sounds good :D Greetings from a fellow PhD student from Germany! I am doing my PhD in Political Science (International Relations) and it is very nice to see someone who does not go into labs but needs to read a lot of articles, archives, and all the fun stuff :) It is also interesting to see the differences in our programs. We don't really have PhD programs. After our Master's, we usually get a part-time contract which consists of giving seminars/lectures, grading Bachelor (and later Master) thesis and other faculty stuff and parallel to that we are writing our dissertation. I am at the end of my PhD and I will also need to write grant applications etc., a little scary. I will be watching all of your other videos once I have a bit of time. Keep up the good work!

Thank you! Ahah I should have put subtitles on the French- but alas, time I don't have! Ahh Germany- that's awesome! I love Germany :) Yes a fellow reader- I can't relate to going into labs at all 😅Oh wow. I know programs vary a lot from country to country, but I don't know much about German systems. Thanks for sharing a bit! Good luck as you write your grant applications!

@@KatherineWeiss They are! I'm curious! Did your Masters and PhD require GMAT/GRE scores? If so, what was your experience like with that exam?
@KatherineWeiss
@KatherineWeiss Год назад
@@rachelbeauchamp8912 it was a requirement for my PhD but not my MA! I took it right after I finished undergrad so my memory isn’t stellar but I know my scores weren’t crazy high. Nowadays most history phd programs have a much more comprehensive application process and (not sure for other degrees) but I think by and large that score is not really as important anymore! Statement of purpose is much important.

You need chai concentrate to make the latte instead on just the one or two tea bags.
@TheVintageAcademic

My recommendation for making good chai at home is to use a loose leaf tea! Definitely look it up bc i am NOT an authority, but chai is made over the stovetop with a good strong black loose leaf tea as the base and then fresh spices/herbs are used to flavor the tea like cardamom, black peppercorn, ginger, cinnamon, etc. You definitely won't get the result you're looking for with bagged tea, but my chai hack is to get a good chai tea loose leaf mix that has the spices in it already, brew it in a french press and mix it with half and half or heavy whipping cream when I pour it in my mug with a touch of maple syrup! It does the trick for me!

thanks for not saying 'chai tea' Katherine! As an Indian, it is so hard for me to hear Americans say 'chai tea' when 'chai' itself means tea 😂

I like your content and your essence; that makes it special. If you would like to modify the aesthetics of your videos, I would tell you to do it for yourself and not hope to satisfy an audience (which you will rarely be able to satisfy 100%). You are wonderful and unique, and who you are is why I consume your content since it is rare to find that around here. Keep doing what you’re doing, sending all my love to you.

Hello!! I always love your realistic videos. Just wanted to ask how long does it take to earn a Phd degree for history? I'm currently in college taking history as my course, and is planning to take a masters degree after. I'm just curious abt how a phd works since they said it's a lot of years. :)))
