I entered IT in the year 2003 after completing MCA and my age then was 35. I started as Technical Writer and continued in the same field until 2008. So, I used technical writing as launchpad to get into IT. I moved to testing in 2008-09, and continuing in testing till this day. Initially I was doing functional testing and some automation using UFT. In the recent years, doing functional, api and dB testing per client requirements. So, I am a Test Lead at 54. The only thing is salary got stagnated but still getting some salary (50k per month) but stay in the job. Staying longer is possible with some flexibility. India is slowly turning like West. My advice to whoever read this comment, please start working early and put hard work. Earn as much as you can till 40-45 (enough for retirement life and savings for kids) and then either continue in higher position in same company or lower your position and work in smaller or startup companies. There are two benefits - first, you already saved enough, so whatever you earn would be bonus, second you have a job. So, whoever worries that after 45, there won't be scope in IT, use this formula while upgrading your skills. Good luck and special thanks to Anand.

I am 39 working as an Technical Architect. As long as you are serious about work no issue. I know good number of colleagues around age range 47-48 working as Tech Leads in Wipro NTT Data HCL I know 3 Architects who do coding with 31 years of experience with 52-53 age still working in Wipro and CTS So it's all about being relevant and showing interest in work. No company in private sector will filter employees based on age and send them out. I know 3 folks with age 26-28 Fired from Wipro for not working 😅

There are two factors in general to survive in the IT Industry till 60-65 years: 1. Don't be a manager/delivery manager/process manager etc. Be a technical or domain functional guy. 2. If you are Tamil and Telugu you can survive with almost every skillset as the leadership won't let one of their own leave.

Depends on person to person. Whatever I have learned in last 12 years (and still learning/earning) I will pass that on to at least 10 persons before I die. I want to help at least 10 families to live a happy life from my learnings/earnings of my GOLDEN LIFE. That's why I will open an IT startup with my own funding on a smaller scale after 3-5 years. That's my plan of 40s. Right now I am 34. 😀

I am 42, shifted management roles technology roles. Doing well. If we do not update or shift ourselves even 5 years of experience is enough to put you out.

I am 43. 19 years in the industry. still working hands-on role. Didn't go for management so far. It's exciting to be technical than management.

I still believe that it’s very difficult to survive after 40-45 years of age, which is the ground reality. I don’t think so, we need to sugar coat this issue, as this may mislead the younger generation unnecessarily. Some may survive due to obvious reasons, but we need to accept the reality and plan the life accordingly. Nowadays, I could see that some of the resources are losing employment even in mid-thirties and then what is the use to think too much about long term may not be useful.. My strong suggestion based up on my vast experience in this field is that , we should not have any type of long-term financial commitments, which may save our life up to some extent, otherwise life will be miserable.

The main problem in India that young college passout with some experience available easily with lesser salary expectations so company hire them for cost cutting. But in europian country workers not available as easily as india so this is main problem it is very crowded now in india every field person want job in it. Because higher salary and life style

Yeah Anand, its pretty much true and imperative for one to identify his area of interest at the earliest possible. Should start working in that direction with lot of passion and will see fantastic results over a period of time. Most importantly, I wanna share few below points to make a good career progress: 1. one should give himself time to shape their desired career by not rushing or pushing themselves atleast in the nascent stage 2. Never ever compare your first page of career with last page of someone else, bcoz each and everyone is vested with unique talent and skillsets. 3. Never ever expect instant desired results as it will create undue pressure on yourself, Success in any area wont happen overnight and its a long journey with different processes on the way. You gotta marry your passion to pursue your area of interest with hardwork and patience. Any one with me on the above points, folks??

yeah right. I am 55 and program in Java, Scala, Python, Javascript, Big Data Cassandra, Elasticsearch, Spark, AWS King.. but in Toronto.. and only for Investment Banks Capital Markets of which I am a domain expert.. in India probably ppl will think I am a loser :)

Do not take bad loans, do not change cars every 3 year , spend moderate on vacations . Your investment shd feed you after 45-50. You are not doing justice to body if you are still working after 45-50

Anand makes excellent points; I am from IIT Delhi; worked all my life in the USA; started as a Software developer, system architect, DBA, Unix system Admin; was a senior VP in a Fortune 500 company building and selling a software product for the financial industry, managing budget and a team of 100 technocrats; lost my job with the whole team, as the company hit poor financial results; at the age of 65 I am a cybersecurity consultant, much in demand, enjoying and having a great time. Know yourself. Strength and weakness.

In my humble opinion, as long as you are a life long learner and open to new ideas and thoughts the age factor is just a number. Because the more skills you add to your kitty the less you need to worry about creating your own opportunities in the world of job market. In IT industry, its not all about Money alone but more to do with adaptability to grab new things at a short time without losing focus. If you constantly do upskilling and reskilling you will hardly find frustration in your career path and will automatically lead to newer avenues

I don't think age matters but yes after certain experience the company keeps on reminding you that you are very senior person and getting highest salary compared to juniors and you need to work more on multiple things but at the same time don't expect too much salary hike

The Biggest mistake you can make in IT career is if you become a manager in one of those Indian consultancy firms . You lose all your technical skill sets and become like a white elephant as you become unemployable in another companies and stuck in that same company and then only way for you to survive is buttering and you scratch my back and I scratch your back . I have seen these managers they are very very insecure . Instead of you stay technical and hands on and be in tech leadership roles then age doesn’t matter . Companies sees your skill set they don’t see your age .

Not just IT, every corporate organisation are following this trend. It’s because of HR, who think they will not grow old. Moreover, these HR juniors, who are just graduates, screen the candidates, who are highly qualified, & experience. Just based on age, they reject candidates in the initial screening. For ex, a doctor starts career around the age of 30-32, after post graduation or super specialisation, by 40-42, they are not given opportunity in corporate organisation, whereas in hospital they can work till they are fit. Doctors working in IT, or companies other than hospitals, have to be very careful.

I am 39. Having 15 years of experience. Now into Architect role. Technical line. Not into Management. Enjoying my role. Not very much concerned what lies ahead. Whatever comes my way, I will take it in challenging mode. Don't be scared. Be confident!!!!

WHENEVER CONFUSED, LISTEN TO SENIORS With around 6 years of experience, I had almost switched from Product Owner to a Data Engineering role (I know it sounds odd, switching from Management to Technical). Needless to say, I was befuddled at this time. Amid this violent storm that was brewing in my mind, I approached Mr. Anand Vaishampayan. He interacted very patiently with me for an hour, understood my position & told me WHY I should stay in management. In hindsight, there could not have been a better decision. Thank you Anand for sharing your insights. There's been a trend in Chinese IT industry that developers who haven't transitioned themselves into managerial roles will be let go when they turn to 35 years old which is a cruel reality that IT workers need to think about a plan b while aging.

What you said is fairly accurate....but the best option really after 40 is to do a startup....build your own enterprise while you have lot of energy and emotional support at home. It may take 5 to 10 years to build something good but then you are set for life or can even retire early!! Trying to survive in a corporate as an employee after 40 is always a struggle as it becomes a battle to keep up with the new rapid technologies and young blood competing with you.

IT workers should keep learning new things, that's the only way to survive. The job market is highly complex and competitive these days, not just in the IT industry.

Well said Anand .... its like a heavenly revelation "Mindlessly shifting jobs across technologies". We need to stick on to a particular domain. This is a mistake committed by me and many others in the industry ..... But post covid the scenario has changed, the other day I took up an interview at a product based company for the role of a "Solutions architect" and they were asking me basic coding related to function pointers and callbacks ..... I was shocked. They even asked me a few questions relevent to unit test frameworks and deployment startegies. Nowadays companies do not want managers who can only interact with clients and handle resources, they are looking at someone who can handle any eventuality and risk without depending on junior resources. The interview was very interesting but the sad part is even after 5 rounds of interview I was not given the offer.

I agree with everything you said, but the last part (in the USA, they don't care about age) is Not true. They really discriminate against people over 50 years old. If you get Laid Off at 50, you will have a hard time finding a job no matter how much experience you have.

If you're into programming, take a serious look at Rust programming language. It's a relatively young programming language with excellent performance and memory safety that no other programming language can deliver. Rust is now ready to join C as a practical language for implementing the Linux kernel. Rust is expected to have a bright future and now is the best time to start learning Rust.

I am 30 years old and earning only 20k/month. I was in mechanical company (since there is no growth), I have recently switch to IT a year back. The salary is really less, am i too late in life??

Companies are not hiring highly experienced person in development because there should not be a case where 3 years of experience candidate and 10 years of experience candidate is doing the same development 😎 It helps in controlling project cost and organisational issues

I am 45+ with 15+ years IT exps. but got layoff & not able to any jobs anywhere for many years becoz of more gap years & Strict BGV..

I started as web developer , then switched to embedded development , then became release manager . I realised management is not my cup of tea . Learnt new technology and working as cyber security tool development , my plan is to move farther in cloud secutity. I am working on a personal project involving blockchain for last 3 years . I am close to 40 with 13 years experience. Point is , indian IT sector very matured and full of opportunities. You can do anything you like , provided you know what you are doing. And never listen to anyone on how to shape your career. What worked for others, mayn't work for you.

In our product based company we have architects and managers who are 50+

70 plus aged People are working in western countries in technical side. Indian companies also make such mind set. Their experience counts.

Working abroad is the best option if we don’t have own business. I see people working till 75 years as software engineer. No retirement age. As per me we age healthy and our life span is increasing nowadays and many people are healthy till 70 to 75 years of age. I consider 40 to 50 is damm young and no compromise needed. If we don’t have the opportunity then work hard to find the other option.

Age doesn't matter in ANY PROFESSION.... It's the SKILL SET that matters... No matter whether you are a entry level.. mid level or highly experienced professional....👍👍👍👍👍👍

My age is 33 years and I am jobless having 10years of Software industry experience and 8 years experience in Oracle Integration.

Everyone appreciates US, European and other overseas work culture, values, management style etc .. when they return from onsite, these people when come to India follow again the Indian style of management. They follow the mindset of their senors and same juniors copy, it's never ending that's why one of the reason people looking for jobs outside India.

This is just a perspective. IT is different where adaptability to situation plays key role in sustaining further. This is because technology keeps changing more rapidly than any other sector. If you are passionate about learning new things and keep your self adaptable to new trends, you can continue your career for more years than other sectors. I saw a live example, my manager is still actively working and has no thoughts about retiring in near future, can you imagine! he completed his B.E. in early 1980's.

Don't make people fool by making baseless vdo. IT is the only field where there is huge shortage of skilled manpower. This is the only field where you can work till 70+ years of age

Sir, Till 50 years i was doing coding and in technical side only. Now just from last 3 years (now 53)for change was in testing. If you don't worry much about salary,if you do your work, we can retire from IT company. Age is Just a number.

Now days IT companies look for Multi skilled people, Mantra to stay long in IT is 1st keep updated with trending technologies, 2nd At least you should be strong in 3three IT skills, 3rd Regularly do certification , 4th Be active participant in all officially works to get noticed 5th Dont worry ,if not we have IT Freelancing sites to get some IT works . Just Spend 30 mins every day upgrading yourself and no need to worry about such things. Any Tech. We won't go down in one day or go up in one day. It's a process, so keep Learning, That is what IT is about and not a 9 to 5 same Type Government Job.

Its a human psycology that every one try to give suggetions after 45 age rather than listen,what i believe is if a person who ever see equally taking suggetions and sharing suggetions can lead therir career succesfully in what ever their age may be

My Friend I am HR Specialist on Compensation & Benefits. Employee Compensation & Benefits Packages are built on Life Cycle of each Job. Salaries Packages are 3 to 4 time higher than Similar Engineering Graduates in Other Industries because: Life cycle of IT jobs are less than other Engineering disciplines. What Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Chemical Engineer earns in his/her entire career of 25 years average service are earned in 12 years of IT services.

Thank you for sharing information. I like to move to techno manager role. But when i talk with my managers or architects , it seems they are not bother about others career. They are more interested in explaining what they will achieve in future. How to improve skill to become techno manager or business analyst without mentors ?

Everybody is commenting about their job switch from technical to management in software industry etc ...my career is extremely diversified , I shifted from hard core civil engineering profession to management role in IT company in last 6 years... Its not that difficult to survive after 45, you just have to upskill reskill and have good network...!

Above all you need to learn how to play politics and keep boss happy. People don't quit companies they quit bosses.

Brilliant video Anand bhai. I am 50 and living in UK. As you rightly said that if you are hands on with technology, you can survive easily with a good package. I always had a clear vision to remain as a technical consultant. Only thing is, I keep updating myself with latest technologies. Also provide lot of guidance and training to juniors in my organisation. 😊👍

I am having 16 plus experience in banking industry and still struggling. I have switched roles and departments and never was offered any substantial role. I tried getting into non technical role as BA. However somehow didn't got an opportunity. I am really frustrated and want to start my IT career. Is it too late. I am 46 years of age. Sometimes even I think what I had planned and where I am today. I want to go abroad but am afraid due to age restrictions whether I would be fit and should I go for an advanced course or do something else will remain in the same position. I feel I have been deprived of promotion inspite of delivering. I need direction and concrete plan for next 10 years. Please guide me

shifting too many tech for job switch is worst after 10 years , just stick to the tech what you love and this gives proper vision on your career , try for early retirement after 40-45 years

These are very good points about people who are in management now. Management roles are like the honeymoon period. New workers are self-managed. So they don't need a manager. After doing 10 years of management, when a 40+ years guy wants to return to software development again - he needs to do a lot of learning for the right confidence. Technology changes every 4-5 years.

I need a little help from the experienced people out there. Pls do bear with me till the end 🙏😅 So I'm a fresher of 2022 batch passout in cse, and right now have two offers in hand, first one say company A, offer is in the field of react js which I wanted/interested in, but the payout for initial 6 months is a little less and also have 2 years of bond, whereas company B, also hiring for frontend role has a payout of around 10k more that the company A for the same 6 months, but here catch is they can change the domain any time they want to, say convert me to a c# or java developer according to their need, and also their full time conversion rate is 20-25% only. So basically most probably after 6 months they'll remove. So in a situation like this which offer letter should I pick, considering in mind that recession might hit in upcoming times, thus finding a job might be even tougher than now. Also, sticking to react js and later mern stack is a better option or shifting to c# (say) is better despite having no interest in it,(only that pay is good if get selected after 6 months in company B) Thanks for reading till now, and will be waiting for your valuable feedback.

Freshers or less experienced people seem to have the perception that managers do nothing. It is absolutely wrong. Being a senior technical person and trying to switch to management roles in other organizations, I find it really difficult. In the interview, they grill me on project management concepts and different management scenarios. Being technical is always beneficial but you have to be really good in project management concepts ( traditional waterfall, PMBOK, Agile , Kanban, Scrum, SAFE, etc.) to succeed in this role. Person highly skilled in project management knowledge with some technical background who can understand architecture and participate in technical discussions is really high in demand.

Hey so amazing to come across the video and I must say I m at 10 yr experience level so I m seriously thinking about my future career moves may be the next assignment that I m gonna take soon may actually be a turning point in the long term because it has that kind of a potential 👍 But who know better just be consistent and patiently do a wait and watch 🤞 that's all..🙂

This applies to those who struggle to survive in young age due to lack of skills. So obviously it would be very difficult to survive in age of 45+ due to weakness by aging plus degree of lack of skills increment.

Health also matters a lot, no one with huge package can work for long term, only persons working on jobs with low coding/ no coding can survive in long term

In big IT companies it is more of perception how you project your importance to the company. It's not all that tough to survive after crossing 45 yrs. No reputed company will fire it's people just on the basis of age. If you manage to contribute on the basis of your experience then it's not a big deal to survive till your retirement age.

I am 45 and still on hands on technical and i love it. That perception is gone where we used to think that after 10 years go into management. If you love tech work stick to it. Main thing is you are satisfied after you log out for the day.

Your time was something else Sir at your time there were not many SDE's but today's era you find every single college Grad want shift into Software Engineer (even I have seen Doctors shifting to IT industries) when there are soo many people after 10-15 years later how many will be able to secure their jobs and how many can switch to management side. In today's era a person should take Coding and Software Development as Hobby not as a full time career.

Those who think of IT industry as a place to relax during those advanced age brackets, crash to their ends. You need to be able to work like a horse, be open to receive from a younger colleague, have the ability to add value with your experience and expertise. And your core strengths are there to stay..hone them and get stronger. But one should try to be an innovator all their lives....

It really depends on what your definition of career. There are many roles in the IT industry for mid manager and delivery management roles after 45 years of age.

I was a professor , I taught in univetsity for almost 17 years. Now I join the industry at the age of 46 ..still I can see great future ahed..I dont think so age could be a barrier to grow ..if you have potential..u can grow at any age

Indian IT has managerial mindset problem where people as experience grows want to move towards management but as you mentioned and i have seen lot of European and US tech people still doing active technical roles regard less of age. Why choice is there but not here? Its time to change mindset of company 😜 and embrace culture where people who want to still do technical work ,coding even in their late 40s can happily continue.

Health also plays a major role, no one can survive in IT industry above 45 years of age with huge packages due to the work pressure and worst work life balance. Only people working in low coding/ no coding jobs can continue their career in the long term.

Good Topic! From my understanding, many a people in the Software development industry go redundant, due to their own personal distraction on various things and also due to not-improving their software skills. If you really wanted to work in the software development, upskilling is very important. Also many a young developers, they switch the job mindlessly for targeting only the salary hike. I met a guy, who is having only 10 years of experience, but switched 16 different companies. Now, no companies are offering him any job, because he is not trustable and his pay is very high when compare to other developers in any organization.

Please come out from IT after 45. Give a chance for others.... It ll help full for other... Any way you earned more than core knw u come out

Whatever skills we experimented in first three years are obsolete now. (Oracle dba, unix admin , apps DBA).We saw our 20 years experienced senior managers getting fired. Next turn will be mine. Is There is no other option than to change our field or do catering business and organic farming! Changing area of work is tough as no one will easily give that job. Suddenly we cannot do web development like fresher .

There is just 1 life. Start with IT as it pays well and takes you around the world! (20s) then plan a financial freedom, shouldnt matter what you do or not your wealth should grow (by age of 40) Once family is set like your child parents wife are taken care of, time to follow your real passion. First people need to understand how IT works even before entering engineering or degree ,they will get enough time to understand about their capabilities as they can go hard in engineering if they zero down on IT. People enter into IT because of salary but the truth is one has to work like a donkey and keep learning.
