REALLY Stuck Wheel on Van or Truck? How to Get It Off

*Headphone user warning 5:50* This is what you can do to remove a stuck wheel from the hub of your car, truck, or van.
My Car Guy Supply Guide: www.amazon.com/shop/carguysupply
This wheel was practically fused to the hub from rust and a tapered friction hub center that is built in to the design. It's good to periodically make sure your wheels aren't stuck on your car so you're not stranded if you get a flat tire and can't get the wheel off.

6 years later (6.30.2023)and this instructional video is still being put to use!! I was having a real problem removing the wheels on my my 1993 three quarter ton Silverado pickup which were rusted in place plus the pressure, but I simply applied penetrating oil and use the torch as per your demonstration and I was able to remove them right away. Thank you so very much!!

I tried everything on my F150 with a stuck on flat. Pre soaked, kicked, sledge hammer with block of wood, drove it with loose lug nuts, still nothing. Popped off the center cap and applied some heat from a small propane torch. Hit it once and it popped right off. THANK YOU for the tip!

I was out of propane for the torch so used the electric heatgun instead and it worked but needed to heat it for a couple of minutes. 8 bolts rear wheels after a canadian winter can be a pain to remove. I also saw someone using boiling water to expand the metal.

I'll share a tip that I was given that worked like a charm. Ram the stuck wheel, with another wheel and tire, just roll it into it hard.

This worked great! After adding WD40 to the hub and using a heavy hammer hitting on a 2x4 for almost 30 mins, the wheel was still stuck and even ended up splitting the wood in half. I was tempted to use a blowtorch but tried hitting it with another wheel instead. Was able to get it loose in less than 30 seconds by ramming the other tire at 90 degrees rubber & rubber on the stuck wheel's sidewall. The key is hitting it with another object of at least the same weight or more.

I had to change a completely blown out tire that was stuck on a CRV. So I couldn't really hit it much with as much effect as a tire that was still good as mine was hanging off the rim lol. But I used WD 40, kicked it and wiggled it a bunch, and then lowered the jack with all the lug nuts off to try and wedge it loose. A couple more hard wiggles after I lowered the jack and she came right off.

I used a hardened piece of chisel stock and hammered between each of the lug bolts. Did this after soaking the hub and lug bolts with PB Blaster. After I got the wheel off I used an angle grinder with a wire wheel to remove the rust from around and between the lug bolts. then as the guy says I applied anti seize around the hub and A LITTLE on the face of the rotor.

Using the heat wrench on an aluminum wheel will damage the clear coating is is NOT a wise way to do it. Penetrating fluid and brute force is the safest way to go being careful not to get the panther piss on the brake surfaces.

It works better if you sit on the ground when you kick the tire. Alternate between your left and right foot several times. Don't kick any harder than you need to so that you don't mess up your alignment. Again, alternate from one side of the tire to the other until you see it starting to come off. Once it has started to move, you can just pull it off with your hands. The torch is a good idea too if you are careful not to damage the finish of the rim, but so far I have always been able to get the wheel off by kicking the tire using this method.

Probably not the right way to do it, but winter steel rims seem to always seize on hubs in Canada. Slightly loosen (but don’t remove) the bolts on the stuck rim and roll it up/down the driveway. You’ll also hear it release. Then snug it back on, move it back to wherever you’re changing the tires. This trick might also work at the roadside with a flat, I imagine the flat tire would move around enough to free the wheel within a few feet.

For my 90 c1500 heat/banging didn't work. I had to ratchet strap an 8 foot 2x4 vertically to the tire with the tie at 12 o'clock and the bottom of the 2x4 just above the bead at 6 o'clock and the 2x4 turned with 2 facing you so it wouldn't flex. Heated the rim and about a dozen or so yanks with all i had and it finally popped. I had 3 lugs a few threads on so I wouldn't get hurt. All I wanted to get done today was the axle brake lines, Wheel Cylinders, rubber line, brakes/hardware and the 1/4" line from front to back. All I got done was removing front to back line, replacing the rear driver brakes and hardware, wheel cylinder and removing the rubber line and driver side axle line. That all started @ 9:30AM... I finally quit @ 8PM. Stupid Hub-Centric vehicles. What a nightmare.

Mine was really REALLY Stuck! I got it off but one little modification. Mine was on the front of the truck and it was an old rusty steel spare tire. I had it up on jack stands and everything was off on the other side, {spring tower and left axle} I did everything you said, PLUS, I cranked the steering as far as it could go to one side so I could get a good whack at it with a long handled sledge hammer⚒ to the inside of the tire. I just hit the tire and not the rim. I must have used a half a can of WD-40 on the round and thru the lug holes. … and a torch .. like you said. I cussed a lot too, I think that helped. 🤬😁

No Torch or not working No hammer or not working No problem 98 Express 3500 (8 lug) Easiest solution I found to free the wheel at least for the Front wheels... •Loosen lug nuts. each lug nut very loose with a tiny gap between the wheel. •Drive Vehicle back and forth 5 feet or so braking vigoursly • Turn wheel back and forth. start gentle, then more vigorous if need be. The first wheel was seized bad, I didn't hear a pop, but then again I hit with a lot of PB trying other methods before this technique..It broke loose right away after jacking it back up. The second wheel may or may not have been seized, but I did the same technique, NO PB I heard a little pop and knew it was free and ready to be pulled...jacked it up and came right off. Clean it up ...no anti seize, needed for the future. If you don't hear the seize break, You'll know it broke free if the some of the loose nuts are now snug, typically the bottom ones. Best to check them so you don't "over do" this process and create other problems with the studs. Thanks for the video OP!

They are torqued in a "criss cross" pattern at 5:22. I re-check the torque of each one in sequence after the initial criss cross torquing, so that I can count to 8, and make sure I don't miss one. There is no problem with that, as they aren't being tightened further. What you're doing is good enough, but I would recommend getting a torque wrench (clicky wrench) instead of a metal bar / breaker bar to tighten the lugs.
