There are a couple distinct rear arm movements that high level hitters use. The rear arm action determines the direction that depth is created as well as the type of plane the hitter has. "Throwers" turn the barrel rearward towards the dugout behind them and tend to create a more "merry go round" type of plane. "Punchers" turn the barrel rearward towards the backstop and tend to create more of a "ferris wheel" type of plane. Since, both patterns can be used at a high level so I try not to change a hitter's natural pattern from one to the other.
