It's time to get real with making sure the car can stop (and shift gears). Still some testing to do here, but I rebuild the master cylinders, check the clutch slave cylinder, and bleed everything using gravity. Oh, and I learn the lesson (again, for the 1000th time) to re-check what I think I tightened!

Thank you sir. I’m having trouble with my herald. However there does not seem to be so many herald videos. Thank you. For sharing.

Thanks, Steve. No, not many Herald videos out there. Much of the same mechanics, though, so hopefully something will help.

Nice bending work on the hydraulic lines. Looks professional.

Owned a Spitfire about 30 years ago. Test drove a beautiful 76 today. Few things left to fix, tach, parking brake and trunk look. The deal breaker for me now is it has almost no breaks unless using full break pressure. The mechanic replaced the master cyl. and checked out all the brakes and said it would just take getting used to. I know the vintage of the car, but never drove a British sports car that braked this bad. Joined some facebook spitfire groups looking for help. Nice video.

Yeah, I'm still not crazy about where my brake pedal feel is, but it does stop. I've got such little experience with non-assisted brakes (last drove my 76 MG Midget around 1987) that I don't remember what they feel like. Good luck and thank for watching!

Nice work Chris. I like the way the lines turned out.

Thank you. I really don't like doing them. You've only got a limited amount of chances and then the start to get ugly and, worse, kinked. I got lucky many times!

"Snowman lookin' hole", made me laugh. Definitely an accurate description! I always gravity bleed as well. People act like bleeding hydraulics is hard, I've never had a problem w/gravity, even in ABS cars.

lol, ya like that one? First thing that popped into my head. I'm here all week... I need to bleed more and I've still got leaks on the brakes...too much to feel confident even for a parking lot jaunt. My next visit will be taking care of all of that (hopefully), getting the gas lines tightened and other odds and ends. Would like to make my maiden parking lot trip this weekend!

That's great you have all week! The weather is great this time of year. I've gotta be honest, I don't like the way your lines have a double flare and the master cylinder is designed for a bubble flare, but I hope you can get them to seal.

@@ericpfiffner5615 yeah, it's not great. Crossing my fingers.

Hi Chris, I have not heard about gravity bleeding. When I bleed the brakes, I have someone sit in the driver's seat, pump up the pedal three times, they say "holding", I open the bleeder and air and fluid comes out in the clear plastic tubing, they hold the pedal down saying "down", and I close the bleeder, then they pump up the pedal again. Hi, Tom. Yes, that's how I usually do it. However, since I didn't want to bug my family, I did a gravity bleed. Since the MC is higher, height wise, than any of the four wheels, you can just essentially drain it, starting with the further wheel from the MC (like normal). I find it's not quite as good of a bleed, but it works good enough to be safe. It's slower, but it works.

Your rear brake pipe set up from the wheel cylinders is very interesting. I’ve just changed all my brake pipes and I have copper pipes coming from the wheel cylinder that feeds around the hub up into a bracket. The hose then fits into that pipe that’s fed through the brake. Maybe it’s different in the uk. Where did you learn your skills from by the way.

Hey DJ. Yes, that confused me at first. They changed the design at some point to go from just hoses, like mine, to those hard brake pipes. Not sure when that happened...Mk3 maybe? I took auto mechanics classes in high school and also my Grandpop was a master mechanic back in the40-70s. I was a submarine nuclear power operator for about 20 years in the Navy, so that helped with a lot of it as well, though I specialized in electronics.

I got the AutoMec kit too but it didn't include a clutch pipe. And, the universal flare was not well documented - I thought I got the wrong kit and contacted them.
@roundtailrestoration

Clutch pipe is separate from the kit. All of the usual suspects have them. I've got to come through my leaks and then I think I'll be ready for a road test!

@@roundtailrestoration Weird! I could have sworn that I looked for a clutch pipe and couldn't find it anywhere. I'll have to take another look (though I bought some pipe and a flare tool, I don't trust my own flares.)

I'm curious why you didn't paint the floors. Not necessary? Ran out of paint? Just so I would ask?
@roundtailrestoration

It will all be covered in carpet for one. And, though I didn't run out of paint, I didn't want to waste it on places that would not be seen just in case. It is all painted in epoxy.

Hi James. Turns out there is such a thing as a universal flare, which is what the pipes have. Not perfect, but it seems to be working now. Thanks!
