I purchased this carburetor last winter for a little project to give me something to do why recovering from surgery, as I really enjoy overhauling carburetors. For some reason I never got to it. I've been cleaning up the garage a little, and wanted it out of my way, so I finally overhauled it.
It's a GM Rochester 2-Jet, an ultra common carburetor used on Chevrolet V8's. This 2-Jet even has the Chevrolet bowtie with "Bay City" in the bowtie. I have overhauled hundreds of these old 2-Jets.... I have never seen one with the bowtie and Bay City in the bowtie. I'm wondering if this carburetor was made in Bay City for the Flint engine plant.
This is a long in-depth video on rebuilding one of these simple Rochester carburetors. If I get a lot of likes and views, I will rebuild other carburetors on video.... including four barrels and other brands like Holly, Autolite, Motorcraft and Carter to name a few.
I often see carburetors in estate sales. I'll start buying them to rebuild and sell, if there is interest in seeing that.
When I was working as a Marine Mechanic, I rebuilt thousands of carburetors, as marine engines used carburetors well into the early 2000's..... Plus all the carburetors I overhauled for old cars and friends carburetors for their cars. I also enjoy overhauling starters, alternators and generators and have done hundreds of them too over the years.
Here is my video on overhauling a Rochester 4-Jet, 4GC; • Rebuilding a Rochester...

Rebuilding Carburetors is a lost art. When I started in the automotive repair business in 1968 I learned how to rebuild carburetors. Some of the people I worked with didn't like to rebuild them. Tune up and Carb repair were something I specialized in. When I quit wrenching in 2000 and went into the management side of the business I was the only guy in the shop who knew how to rebuild them. By the way the owners manual for my 66 Chevy told you how to tap on the carburetor if the float was sticking.

Howard, what a good video. I really think these carburetors are underappreciated. As I rebuild my 1967 Tempest, I'm seriously thinking of putting my original 2jet back on the 326. Back in 1985 I drove my Tempest from Arizona back to Michigan and going across the Great Plains I was averaging 24 mpg. How can you beat that on an old V8. Anyway, thanks for the inspiration. I very much enjoy your work.

Nice work Howard. Week after next I have a carb like this coming in for rebuild. Looking forward to the job. I haven’t done a Rochester 2 barrel in forever so this is really helpful. I’ve done numerous Holley, 2100 Fords and Edlebrock but these have eluded me. There are very few guys round these parts still doing carbs. Cheers!

Back in the early 80's a friend owned a carburetor rebuild shop. When he would get behind, he always called me to help him get caught up. One carburetor I was really good at was the Motorcraft Variable Venturi.... no one knew how to set them up. They were super easy, for me anyway.
@brianhdueck3372
@brianhdueck3372 Год назад
@@OldCarAlley conceptually the variable Venturi was a very good carb and the ones that worked did very well. The problem with them was Ford had little if any field training for the dealerships so most cases all they did was swap them out for 2100’s. Sad for customers but great for the few guys who actually understand them.
@OldCarAlley
@OldCarAlley Год назад
@@brianhdueck3372 Thats exactly correct. I worked in a Ford dealer when they came out. There was zero training on servicing them. I got the shop manual out and learned by doing one. After finishing it up, I though what a simple carburetor. Only issue is you do need a good dial indicator to set them up, but once set up, there is not much else that needs be done to them. My 81 Country Squire had one. That car ran great, and got 24 mpg.

Carb looks great. Apparently the carbs with Bay City on them were actually produced in the Chevrolet plant there, not by Rochester. That would explain the bowtie. They probably needed more carbs than Rochester could supply, sort of like in 1971 when Chrysler used Rochester 2Jets on some 318 engines instead of the usual Carter 2bbl.
@OldCarAlley
@OldCarAlley Год назад
Yes I remember seeing 318's with Rochester's on them. A lot of people don't know both Rochester and Carter built the Quadrajet. My brother had a 85 Dodge 1500 Prospector with a 360 equipped with a Carter Quadrajet from the factory.
@MoparDan
@MoparDan Год назад
Howard, I enjoyed watching this video on your carburetor rebuild. My only hands on experience with Rochester carburetors were disassembly and cleaning of Quadrajets for 1978 and 1986 vehicles. The 1978 carburetors of which I did two were model M4MC and the 1986 carburetor was an E4MC model. The M4MCs were for a 1978 Chevrolet C10 pickup and a Pontiac Firebird. The ’86 carburetor was for my Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme that I had at the time. The air horn on the ’86 Quadrajet had a binding secondary air valve shaft that I carefully reamed with a correct size drill. When I drove the car afterward there was quite a difference because the secondary’s worked for the first time since the car was new. It’s amazing what it took in the day to meter fuel before fuel injection came on the scene.

About to rebuild a ‘84 Isuzu Trooper II carb. I replaced the accelerator pump because the boot was leaking, but now after getting it running it’s clear it needs a rebuild/cleaning. Runs/idles great once it’s warm, but does not want to start and idle cold at all.
@OldCarAlley
@OldCarAlley 5 месяцев назад
Check to make sure the choke is functioning correctly and check for vacuum leaks, when doing your overhaul of the carb, as both will cause hard cold starting and poor cold performance. On some carb's, the throttle body comes loose from the float body, causing a vacuum leak making very poor cold performance.

@@OldCarAlley I replaced all the vacuum lines that were cracking or brittle that I could find and made sure all were connected. I’m working without any manuals so it’s all half-educated guessing. There is a vacuum sound when it’s idling though, especially when it’s not at operating temp yet and when it stalls it’s a heavy vacuum sound as it dies out.
@OldCarAlley
@OldCarAlley 5 месяцев назад
With it running, spray carb cleaner around the carb base, throttle shaft, intake runners, anywhere there would be vacuum. The engine will smooth out as soon as you hit the vacuum leak with the carb spray.@@jonathanyoung7763

Yes the plastic pot is common. To adjust it, bend the linkage why it's under vacuum.... its often shaped so it can be bent. I use a drill bit in the size the shop manual states, between the lower part of the choke plate and the air horn.

Is it possible to fix the choke butterfly plate that binds up in the air horn? It appears to be out of round or warped like you described; probably from over tightening the wing nut. Very carefully grind the edge so it closes and seals? Or would I be making a huge mistake?

I noticed that carb doesn't have those cylindrical baffles that insert into the carb body under the large ported tubes on the venturi? Seems I have one 2-jet that does use them (smaller cfm) and one that does not, unless I lost one pair of them somehow. The ones I have (after taking apart two carbs) match the holes on the smaller carb/venturi/bore. Are these baffles crucial to correct carb function, at least if it came with them? Plan is to go with the venturi that came with the larger cfm carb, without the baffles. Any thoughts appreciated.

Some carburetors they just set in the opening for them, then the venture attaches over them. the engine will not run above idle if they're plugged or missing. I find most 2gc and 4gc carbs have fixed tubes, but have seen them with separate tubes also.
@RastusMcbride
@RastusMcbride 9 месяцев назад
Thanks.... used the larger body/venturi without the tin tubes, seems to run well, engine has very quick response.Think it's a bit rich though with 6X jets, the idle mixture screws don't have much of an effect- 300 V8 200 hp, will try the 5X jets from old carb. Also with my old marine linkage on the new carb, the idle screw doesn't have anything to push against but seems to idle about right anyway. Think I need to readjust float, was pyramid shaped no carb numbers couldn't find any reference. Can pump gas in with boat tank "squeeze bulb" till it overflows and stumbles so try a quicker shut-off level on the float? Thanks again. @@OldCarAlley
