If you ever get the chance, can you do a similar video like this on a Dodge Challenger chassis/frame rail? Currently needing to do mine and no one else on RU-vid really shows how to simply just replace a rail or weld one like you did with the Chrysler 300C
Hi mate, we do not have the Dodge Challengers here in Australia unfortunately. I am pretty sure that Chrysler run all the cars on the same chassis, i think you would find its the same rails.
Curious why you needed to split the grafted section in half. Wouldn't a proper weld penetrate both inside and outside? is it because the manufacturer spec requires you to grind down the inside weld? Could the same result of a smooth inside finish be accomplished by putting a copper backing plate inside the rail while welding and then removing the copper plate through the front hole after welding is complete?
How much would a welding spot charge for this type of job? I have a savage 300c that needs that exact piece cut off and welded back in order to pass inspection.
not bad but i would have welded in a backing plate gusset inside the rails over the butt weld area . just for added strength . plus always pre heat everything before welding when it’s a chassis rail ! just eliminates all moisture from the steel . allows a clean weld less chance of inclusion from behind the weld .
Cheers for the tips mate👍 I agree with the gusset but I have to do the repair to the manufacturers repair procedure so it can pass a VIV inspection, they just say to do a but weld.
problem with your idea is that you're ignoring the way the frame is designed to have crush and deflection in an accident. making the rail thicker/stronger eliminates those design features.
