Al Badham on Scratch Building O Train Cars

Al Badham built 98 scratch built train cars over his lifetime. Mostly in O scale, and in many gauges, On2, On3, On30, O standard and the ODD On18!
We had a plan to do a show (or two) on Als models when he finished his 100the car. But he died in his sleep shortly after building the 98th car.
The "O Scale Guys" were (and still are) a loose group of guys who came together to build an O scale modular railroad in the 1980's The last "hangers on" are Steve Strebel, Don Henriksen and myself with Mike Neiderhauser and Don "Boss Man" Shaefer still about and still dropping in.
Decades later and 3 modular and 2 club layouts later the O Scale Guys no longer share a railroad, but each has their own "thing". Steve now rebuilding the great O scale layout he started dismantling, Don working mostly at the bench building On3 and large scale locomotives and cabooses, "Boss Man" collecting O scale brass and Mike collecting O standard and dreaming of a layout. AND us, screwing around at garagemahal and working toward a Garden Railroad.

I always admired how Al, more or less, reinvented the wheel! I liked the way he made most of his tools or improvised by implementing something else, such as clothespins for clamps. One of the ideas that I liked from another person, was using Legos for squares. They can be put together in any configuration to hold corners true when scratch building! Al was a very talented individual! An educator in every aspect! Once a teacher, always a teacher! I hope everyone was paying attention... Even now.

Odd that he never really seemed to think of himself as a teacher when that’s what he truly was. Musician or music teacher? Modeler? Sure. But he loved to do workshops and demonstrations. And videos. And articles. I think he really only built to show people the work and inspire them to also build. Or play. Or share.

@@ToyManTelevision people like him are a dying breed (pun not intended) . The ways of the past is fading with the passing of each experienced old timer. The old ways are disappearing because of technology and automation. I fear the day when these skills and methods of building are lost forever.

One of my favorite people to get talking...so I could learn. A retired shop teacher too. I just stumbled on this and played it hoping on the "Holy Grail of Tips", thought I found an interesting new craftsman to follw , then read some comments. An obvious loss for the hobby, but sorry on your end it sounds more personal. Thanks for sharing.

You're batting 1000 if your remembered for building some of the best scratch built model rail cars/etc around. And then to be a really great person on top of that. I know nothing of this man but from the past two videos I have watched on this channel. After my Dad's funeral, the priest and I were sitting together with a beer, and he said " you know things will be ok when you and your family will be at the Thursday night family dinner , and some one will tell a story about your Dad, then some one tells another, and pretty soon you all are laughing about him. Then you will know it will be ok". He was right. I hope that's the case with you guys. Ironically, you posted REMEMBERING AL on my birthday, two years ago.

Hi. Yes that was a trying time for us. Loosing two close friends in a week. My mother told me the hardest part of growing old is watching everyone else go before you. I get it. We all love loosing ourselves in a project. A model, a ring Karen is making, editing the show. For a time it’s just you and your project. Time and space vanish. The world goes away. I have often realized the sun is up. I’ve been at it all night and the new day arrived without me noticing. I think that’s what al was doing the night he died. Lost in something on the computer. Drifted off and never woke. All in all that’s not a bad way to go.
