The "bitingly sarcastic and deadpan" female main character is one of the most overused, played out, tiresome character types in fiction today

🦇📚☕️👊🏿… Hey Miss Nakia! 👋🏿 I watched this video months ago but I realize I never left my emoji’s (I’m catching up ha!). I said this before on your previous review for “Survive The Night” but it’s actually my favorite Riley Sager book out of the ones I read (Lock Every Door, Home Before Dark, The House Across The Lake). Mainly for nostalgia reasons. Since it was set in the 90s and that’s when I went to college (late 90s actually) and I remember those ride share boards/postings…it was in my college cafeteria. Also I liked that there were certain songs mentioned and I remember looking them up and playing it while reading. I also liked that it was in script form. Interesting enough, as I was reading this, it reminded of an old film I watched “The Eyes of Laura Mars” starring Faye Dunaway. I feel Riley borrows from films and recreates them for his books. I didn’t like “House Across The Lake” at all. It reminded me of the film “Ghost” mixed with other films. I may revisit “Lock Every Door” again, but right now I’m about to start “The Only One Left” which I remember you liking that one a lot! And then I’d like to read his earlier books and also perhaps read his books under his real name but they’re out of print. I can’t wait for your next video! 🙌🏿

Hey @mrbrownroyyal ! No worries. I'm behind on things too so I get it. And I always appreciate your support. So thank you, thank you, thank you! 🙏🏾🤗🦇 Funny that you mention catching up on Riley Sager's old books cause I'm currently revisiting a lot of them for a future updated ranking video. And I must say that my ranking will definitely be a lot different the second time around. 😉 I definitely agree with you about Survive the Night. It's such a fun book and so nostalgic. I also went to college in the late 90's so I remember those times too. Can't wait to see what you think about The Only One Left. 🙈😁

I'm so late to this video! Last month was a mess lol "I know myself... better than... I should be listening to other people - that is not a correct sentence, but you know what I mean" 🤣 cracked me up! lol I know exactly what you mean. We know ourselves best. Sometimes I try books that are recommended to me and I'm like... Why did I do that???

Whaaaatt? Nakia, you haven't read Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None?????????? Impossible! My girl Aggie is the Queen for a reason. You have to read And Then There Were None! Crooked House and The Pale Horse are also so good. The woman was so prolific that she makes everything look derivative. I'm still working my way through her work... should be done in 15 years lol. But would love to hear your thoughts on some classics!

🦇 I think you might like the audiobook for And Then There Were None. I just checked my library, and there is a 2013 version narrated by the actor Dan Stevens. The 2012 version is narrated by Hugh Fraser, the actor who played Hastings in the Poirot series, and is also excellent. He does great voice work.

🦇I would've dnf'd Listen to the lie too. I can't stand that personality type. I haven't gotten around to Lisa Jewell's books yet, but I will probably skip that one because the premise didn't intrigue me. She has another one called The Family Upstairs or something like that, that's on my tbr. I read The Only One Left by Riley Sager and gave it 3 stars. It's the only book I've read so far and Survive the Night has been on my tbr for years at this point but I'm in no rush to get to it. I had an open tab buried somewhere with your review that I still need to get to. I swear I have about 600 open tabs between 3 browsers. I really need to start culling these tabs. Years ago, I used to read my cousin's Berenstain and Arthur books. I don't think he ever read any. He has 2 nieces now and they would've made a nice gift. I have no idea what he did with them. He was always more into gaming, so they probably got thrown out. It makes me sad because those books were in great condition when we were kids. Pretty much untouched. Speaking of prison books, I really enjoyed Chain Gang All- Stars this year. As far as my favorites so far this year, I finally got around to Red rising and listened to all 3 books back to back and then got to the 4th book where they added a bunch of new narrators and took a break. For non-fiction I really enjoyed Born a Crime. For romance I loved Ruling Sikthand by Victoria Aveline. I stepped out of my comfort zone and listened to The Salt Fields by Stacy Flood. Its an Historical fiction novella and I really loved the prose. I get what you mean about how audio narration can elevate a book. I think if I'd read it, instead of listened to it, I might've rated it slightly lower.

Love this. And yeah I bet those childhood copies of The Berenstain Bears and Arthur books would've been nice to still have. I had some Berenstain Bears books too when I was a child and I'm sure we donated them. But the beauty is I can still look for nice used copies now. 😊 Sounds like you're having a good reading year so far @Roads_in_Autumn . Hope the second half is just as good if not better. Happy reading! 📚🖤 Appreciate you! 🤗🦇

Yikes. I had Listen for the Lie on my TBR but I HATE the "mean = strong" trope for main characters 😬 Lisa Jewell is very hit-or-miss for me; I don't mind domestic thrillers though, might still give that book a chance. I remember that Bearenstain Bears book. I agree, it's good to promote healthy eating but the story didn't age great. Personally I like when you talk about kids' books; like George Bernard Shaw said "Never give a child a book you wouldn't read yourself." 🦇

Thanks for your review of Listen for the Lie. I think I will take that one off my tbr. I will make you sad, I finally read Pines by Blake Crouch and I didn't like it! I could not stand the main character. I actually DNFed it but then read the end so that I could see what the twist was. I am also one of the ones who enjoyed reading Survive the Night 😀 My favorite children's books are the Critters books. Have you read any of them?
