The show struck a chord with kids everywhere, but the movie may have a harder time getting a larger audience. Doug takes a look at Recess: School's Out.
Recess: School's Out is a 2001 American animated comedy film based on the Disney television series Recess. It was produced by Walt Disney Pictures, Walt Disney Television Animation and Walt Disney Television Animation Digital Production with animation done by Sunwoo Animation and Sunwoo Digital International. It came out when I was a little kid and it was the first movie that talked about generation gaps and how kids of any generation usually grow up with and do similar things. It's insane yes, but I think it was intentional given how it starts out like a usual episode but quickly shifts gears. Probably to shake up the formula.

god i love this movie and remember Prickleys 'I'll let you in on a little secret, Detweiller. Every adult you've ever known was a kid at sometime in his life. You think we don't remember summer vacation? Riding our bikes down the creek. Catching polliwogs in a jar. Camping out under the stars. Well you're wrong! Sometimes I sit there in my office, looking out at you kids in the playground and I think, "They don't know how good they got it. In a few years, they'll be grownups like me and all those good times will be memories for them, too". So go ahead. Put a whoopie-cushion in my chair. Put fake vomit on my carpet. Make fun of my "big, saggy butt". But don't ever say I don't care about summer vacation, 'cause those memories are the last part of childhood I got left.' I was 6 when this came out now i'm 23 this is most real thing said during my childhood movies

The message didn't quite sink in as it probably should have but after seeing Doug's review of this, I had to go watch it again and this time the message hit hard. This show was genius, the writing was amazing and it actually treated kids with respect and respected their intelligence. I learned a lot from this show, if only Doug knew how amazing it was, sucks that he’s judging based on this movie. Movie turns 20 today! I remember my sisters and I saw it in the Adirondacks. I was laughing non stop at so many of the jokes. Animation looks way better than the show which I only partially watched. Found it refreshing that TJ and his friends potentially face the end of their summers as kids before growing up. The 1960s era throwbacks were a nice touch too. James Woods does wonders as the villain more concerned with his principal duties than giving students their freedom with recess during the school year. The kids as well as the adults understand the meaning of childhood and summer vacation, the value of it, and how long it'll stick with them for years to come. It's also a better representation of school than most things, shows how each set of friends can be from any curricular group and not being confined to any labels.

One thing this movie does SUPER well that not a lot of movies based on cartoons do, is be faithful to its source material, while still being accessable to newcomers. well I mean part of the issue is that this is the END of the Recess show's story. This is IT. Thus they want to end on a insane a way as they can go, but still elave time for the characters to get a proper goodbye so its not JUST about this crazy villain's plan. At the heart of it is not the villain's plan but the relationship between TJ and the Principal (an episode of the show in fact actually had set this up early on by having the Principal lose his memory, think he's a kid...and then have a breakdown a genuinely rather heartbreaking scene where he tries to reject growing up but TJ convincing him he NEEDS to grow up) and how their lives and relationshipw ith each other will change and ultiamtely things change, people part, and what matter is you go with that change, you accept it, but you take hose experiences with you and never forget them. Because that's what's growing up is about, and soone ror later we all have to grow up. (but yes the villain's plan is really insane)

Like he REMEMBERS when he was them - and he knows that adulthood is approaching for them - and while he's envious; he's also a little proud. Little sad that Doug wasn't too big a fan of this movie. I loved this movie as a kid and I still really enjoy it now. Being a "series finale" movie doesn't benefit first-time viewers but having watched the show beforehand totally changes the perspective of watching the movie. They had 5 seasons of character development for not only the main kids, but Prickly and some of the other staff as well. This movie also serves as the end of Gus' character arc of learning to lead and stand up for himself. And no matter what, James Woods as a comedy villain will always be amazing. Also, the soundtrack made up of classic rock from the 60s and 70s is absolutely fantastic and one of my favorite OSTs Disney's done. At least for Disney Channel based movies anyway. Anyhoo, rant over, just wanted to share my enjoyment for the film. And if Doug ever watches the show (which I doubt, it's hard to find and Doug is not in the target demographic) I hope he rewatches the movie as it does benefit from viewing the show. Still a fairly positive review for a first time viewing though!

Never watched the show as a kid. I was too spoiled by Gargoyles and Batman and other whizz-bang-flash action shows with slick animation and badass character designs. 18 years after this movie was made and about 10 years after my parents and I cleaned out the video collection, and I _still_ own my VHS copy of "Recess: School's Out". One of my favorite movies growing up, and now all it does is make me cry.

Recess was a direct homage to Hogan’s heroes which they even alluded to in the nursing home volunteer episode when a WWII vet flash backed to his time in a POW camp. This movie was a parody of a spy movie with over the top villains and henchman and a doomsday device.

Watching this movie without first watching the TV show is like watching a season finale without first watching the show itself. I understand your lack of enjoyment, but the movie plays off the tv show the jokes, the emotional speach by prickley, even the impact of tj losing his friends to camps was very emotional because your Soo used to seeing all of them together, so when he's sad he's alone for the summer you actually feel that, at least for me I felt what tj felt. Overall the craziness is what made this movie work, because the tv show was so mature and filled with so much value.

I wouldn't say the film is an accurate representation of the show, but it is supposed to be the culmination of the entire show and story (of course they later made 2 more "films" but whatever) and that worked for me. The lesson and the fact that the main character is arguably Prickly, not TJ, is what makes me love it, especially the last shot where Prickly watches the kids go out and play while he remembers why he became a teacher holding his 60s Peace necklace and "Let the Sunshine in" plays.

I hate comments like this. Not everyone is going to watch the show. If the movie depends so heavily on knowing all the details of the show, it's going to be a shit movie for someone who didnlt know all that. Doug gave a pretty fair review for someone who didn't see the show, even acknowledging that he's not sure if fans would or would not like the movie.
@peterschadenberg9045
@peterschadenberg9045 4 года назад
I did like that the movie pretty much devoted its entire first act to help the show's fans transition from the fact that even though the show is a sitcom with a school setting, the movie is pretty much a mad scientist movie with a plot that seems to be based on a conspiracy theorist's rant. The thing is that while audiences not familiar with the show will still get the six protagonists' caricatures, the movie doesn't remind or reintroduce what the characters' particular likes are or what ticks them off, and with the exception of TJ the unfamiliars will have trouble picking up the gang's names. I wasn't raised with the show much, but I did rediscover and love it as an adult and have now seen every episode. Because the show of course gave the six protagonists a list of things they like and get tick off by, when I got around to the movie I actually kind of liked it. But had I watched the movie without seeing the show, I wouldn't have been able to even remember most of the characters' names and honestly would have switched off. The only watchable element for the unfamiliars is James Woods' performance and he doesn't prominently appear until the halfway point. But since I am a fan I pretty much liked it and was surprised with how well they did the genre mix/switch.

@@Ashannon888 here's the thing though even if you don't care for the show as a reviewer you always do your research before actually making the review. that's the purpose of being a reviewer you can't just go into a film or show expecting to not know anything about it and as a professional like Doug I would think he would know that by now but sadly he doesn't.

This one's wierd because the show is very down to earth where the kids personalities kind of make the show. One episode would feature the kids finding a way to beat the heat another would be one of the kids going through learning about one of the meaner teachers. This had at least half that but then it mixed it up with this crazy plot which the show could do crazy plots I remember one where they basically had to defuse a school yard war.

Pretty much all Disney channel movies based on shows tended to go way more over the top and the actual show ever did. You have the Suite Life of Zack and Cody, the Lizzie McGuire movie, Recess, the Proud family, Even Stevens. Even movies based on shows that were already on the more fantastical side tend to take things a step further like Phineas and Ferb, Kim Possible, teachers pet and Wizards of Waverley Place. It is NOT a good idea to judge these shows based on their movies because they tend to be very different in plot and tone. The closest to matching the original show is definitely Kim Possible, then Phineas and Fern and MAYBE wizards. But I just want to warn you not to take these movies as representations of the show they originate from (especially the Suite Life movie-I don’t know WHAT the hell happened there).

The show is anything but a typical Saturday morning cartoon, it funcions more like a satire of jail with a big dose of positive messaging and also a surprising amount of references to stuff like film noir, war movies, science fiction and just general sociology. The movie is fanservice, it brings together everything that made the show good in a larger adventure, and it goes a long way to redeem the characters of Principal Prickly and Miss Finster, whom in the show are essentially presented as a warden and a guard, respectively.

I was a fan of the show and ironically there was one episode that showed that the villain's plot would not have had the desired outcome. The Board of Education cancelled recess in an attempt to improve test scores, but they ended up plummeting because the kids had all the energy sucked out of them since they no longer had that 40 minuted a day to blow off steam. So in the end recess was reinstated since the BoA realised that it was a necessity for the students to succeed.

Lol there have been episodes where the kids go to court for various and weird reasons. Two of the episodes some kids turn back into kindergarteners. The teacher is a straight up liberal hippy, the popular kids have a tire club house turned into a mansion, there are kids who are called "swinger kid", "library kid", "hustler kid" and "chior kid". It was a pretty weird show with cute moments thrown in, and needless to say, the movie reflects it almost perfectly.

If I think of ones I remember off the top of my head, there's the one where Randall blackmails King Bob to make him Prince of the playground, the one with the trial about whether Spinelli threw a rock in a dirt clod war, The Box, the one about Gus refusing to play dodgeball, the one where they have to write an essay about their best friend, the one where Gus temporarily becomes King, the one where Vince goes an entire day without beating someone at something, the one about the monster stickers... man, I could go on, I loved this show. Even its least enjoyable episodes were still good.

This is what actually got me into the show itself when I was younger, and with that said, I have this film to thank for that. The film is more or less a feature-length kind of 'send-off' episode for these characters that fans of the show have grown up loving; it embraces everything that made the show work and has it play out full-length. If you're a fellow fan like I am, chances are you might enjoy this. If you haven't heard of "Recess" and this film is your 'introduction' to it, you might feel differently. I say take it for what it is, it's perfectly harmless. :)

Sounds like we need to get Doug to marathon Recess like he did with ATLA xD The show honestly was thought out and down to earth for it's audience and both kids and adults were written very well, and the humor and fun dumb stuff was great if you thought the character struggles were boring. It had it's fair share or WEIRD episodes that were as far fetched as this movie just in a shorter time [The Hall 9000 parody still makes me laugh] For a silly disney kids show of the 2000s, this was one not fans just look at with nostalgia goggles, but with endearment.

The movie is better if you go in having seen the show, because it very much builds on the relationships and character traits that have already been established and explored. Same goes for the bizarre balance between regular kids dealing with being kids and the crazy scenarios that sound like a kid's fantasies, that's just the kind of flexible reality the show always presented.
