So beautiful to see Thijs and his daughter. They’re good people. I’ve had a similar experience or two in one of my locals. Amazing how people find each other in this small world. This is the true meaning of community. I only wish this would happen more frequently; there seem to be these lines drawn - which I completely reject. And I know you do too, Steve. Amazing Black Flag releases. Rise Above, Six Pack and TV Party were regulars on those homemade cassette tape that dominated my teen years. We didn’t know what we were rising above but we sure demanded it anyway. Lol. Thanks for sharing. Cheers! Shawn

lol, we didn’t know what we were rising above haha very funny Shawn. Odd how things never change in life from grade school, to high school to now, peop,e just can’t seem to get along. I don’t believe in any of that. I don’t always agree with people but that doesn’t mean we still can’t be friends. The connections and the meetups I have made with the VC is what I treasure most. But some people love drama. I stay away from all of it, I do this for enjoyment like you Shawn

Hello Steve; A pay raise for the endorsements might help & a cue card. We would have enjoyed in the mini falls. Always nice to receive VCLT. Black Flag, was our sons musical taste. The Helicopters, slamming rock. Los Nuggetz, You Really Got Me loose translation. Smooth JazzBO music with Wayne Shorter. Take care, Tina & Pat!~

Cue cards are always a plus for me especially the older I get. It was so fun to run into Tyce , small world. Wow, you son was really banging out the music. My boys never got into it. My older son like some Christian Rock, my younger son, not even sure. I didn’t do well raising them musically. Time to work on the next generation!

Love Black Flag. I was a young teenager in the 80”s and played in some punk bands. Growing up in Orange County, California, back in those days you could see live punk shows in backyard house parties as well as venues. And some prominent punk bands at that along with the local bands too of course. Though it was always a crap shoot at what time it would ultimately get shut down. I eventually got into more alternative music and then ultimately into grunge and many other genres after that. But I will never forget my roots and always have a special place set aside for punk rock. Thanks for another terrific video Mr. Carlson.
@stevecarlsonvinylcommunity9147

Loved the stories of your youth. Isn’t it amazing how exciting music has made our life. Just the thought of those back yard parties with all those punk bands providing the entertainment. Where I grew up the high school kids formed polka bands as there was a lot of money in that haha. Personally, I couldn’t stand polka!
@user-zx6oc3bi3b
@user-zx6oc3bi3b 27 дней назад
@@stevecarlsonvinylcommunity9147 Okay thats funny. Can’t say I saw or heard any polka bands. But when I was 13 I was sneaking into backyards to see these shows. Eventually I learned guitar not long after and began playing in some of these bands. It was a wild and incredible time for sure. Some of the best things about punk in the day. You didn’t have to be the best guitar player to play in punk rock bands. I think it was 70 percent attitude. 30 percent musicianship. But I got better eventually.

How cool that you just bumped into a VC guy at the record store. Cool VCLT from North Carolina. I'm not sure how I feel about jazz artists taking the stage without ever having truly rehearsed or played together, but it sounds like the Shorter record is growing on you so maybe it worked out well. So fun to see the Mexican garage rock. I grew up in SoCal and you would hear it quite often when I was a kid. Always loved it. I think I liked it better than the American or British equivalents that was so ubiquitous on FM Pop radio. They sounded so familiar yet entirely unfamiliar, if you know what I mean. But I hear what you're saying about the commercial interludes in that particular release. They are fine ones as a curiosity but don't really lend anything to repeat listens other than wishing they weren't there. Oh well, go figure… somebody somewhere thought it was a good idea. As always, thanks for sharing! I loved the story at the beginning!

Found the Lion & the Cobra in my shelves after Sinead passed, I had forgotten I had it. She was mentioned in a book I just read, the autobiography of a reggae record label founder. Shew was interested in going to Jamaica and asked for help in places to go. He passed on some info, they met and got on well but later she left an irate, threatening message on his answering machine. A troubled and volatile, but very talented individual. Too expensive for record stores in Boulder, that's not good. How are the college kids going to collect their vinyls. Have a good week Steve

That whole first side of Lion and the Cobra is great. Funny you mentioned a Gabriel vibe on Hands On Me. She kind of borrowed that title from his album Security. They had a very close relationship. He respected her talent immensely. I saw her live at the Paradise Rock Club shortly after she released Lion. The show was great. Seeing Mike Joyce and Andy Rourke from The Smiths playing in her band made it even better. Check out some of the Massive Attack "100th Window". Sinead's vocals on some of the songs was really strong. You will dig it. Do you have "Blue Lines"? Check out the song "Unfinished Symphony". I appreciate your detailed review of the Shorter Jazz Fest from 2017. I did not realize that he was playing well into his eighties which was incredible. Superb update Steve. Dug the Black Flag segment too. Enjoy the upcoming week. It rained here all weekend long. I’m my circle of friends it was considered a bit of a joke record in the eighties as we were all anti-metal or anything that influenced metal (ie Sabbath) which was the influence of Side 2. I’ve grown to appreciate the influence it had on grunge now.....& it’s a £80.00 record 😆 I passed over it hundreds of times when it was a £5.00 record. I’ll track it down!

They may not be Finnish Mr Finglish but they are Scandinavian so I’m still supporting the area! That was a pretty cool group. I need to get there first couple of albums, I really liked their sound. I think you should go and see them!

Hi Steve, I've heard the Struts and like what I heard, I just haven't got around to picking up any of their albums, I never see them out in the wild. I have both of the Black Flag LPs, My War is my favorite of the two. The Hellacopters put out some great music over the years, Eyes of Oblivion is their comeback album, I like it, but I think their earlier stuff is better. I need to check out that Los Nuggets album, sounds cool. A nice stack this video, have a good week.

My War is your favorite, side 2 was tough for me Michael. I need to listen to it some more. I would like the first couple Hellacopter albums, eventually I will see if they can be found. I heard those have more of a garage rock feel to this. Los Nuggetz, worth looking into Michael, pure fun!

I was lucky enough to see Sinead O'Connor on a bill with the Chieftains and the Great Big Sea. A great singer and an excellent songwriter. I have one of those Black Flag albums but I do tend to like British punk more than American (I also lean towards British blues over American)... and British rock over American. Hmmm... I think I'm beginning to sense a pattern emerging.

Darrell, you are an Anglophile Maybe in Canada it’s called something different. Great Big Sea. I had a two week vacation where we went tot he eastern province’s. It was there that I was introduced to Great Big Sea. I loved them, bought a number of their CDs. The music was very fitting for that section of Canada. I got introduced to some other great regional Canadian groups but alas they all washed away. BTW, thanks for the download, I will get that loaded, always interesting what you find Darrell

-- Beat's Me -- "I love the sound of breaking glass / Deep into the night" Do you like to clean? I don't. I certainly like things to be clean, though. It bothers me when they're not. Like many people, I do a spring-cleaning of my house. I'm very thorough. I try to get every nook and cranny. This year, while dusting, I saw a silverfish dart under a baseboard. I've been battling these nuisances since I've been at this house. "Out of sight, out of mind," right? Not when it comes to cleanliness. I started thinking of all the gross things that must be between the walls of my house. What if the whole wall is covered with silverfish? That made me cringe. Probably more likely the wall was covered with dust and spiderwebs. But that's bad enough. How could I ever consider my house clean with all that dust and grime on its walls? I had to clean that space. At least once. One thorough cleaning and then I'd seal it back up. When I knocked a chunk of the wall out with a hammer, I saw a capital R in red paint. I thought it was some kind of marker that the workers put there. I gave the wall some more whacks and I saw the R was part of the word REALITEDIUM. What the heck kind of word is that? A made-up word is the answer. But the made-up word was intriguing. I kept on hammering. More made-up words: HUMANITEDIUM, AUTHORITEDIUM, PURITEDIUM. All in big red capital letters. I ended up knocking a huge section out of the wall. It was covered with words. I noticed all the words were ones that could end in -ity, but they had been made tedious, so to speak. Then I found more than words. I looked down between the walls and noticed a bottle of Chianti in a straw basket. What a fiasco, I thought, literally. There was a partially melted candle in the mouth of the bottle. The second item I found was a set of bongo drums. A bottle of Chianti with a candle in it, bongo drums, crazy words scrawled on the wall, I had a very good idea of what this was all about. But the hat I found put the capper on it. Though it was somewhat obscured by cobwebs, I spotted a black beret. My house had been the house of a beatnik. The house had been built in 1956, so the year fit. Ever since I moved into the house, I'd heard these arrhythmic drumming noises late at night. I wondered if some drunk person in the neighborhood was drumming. Except the sound seemed to be coming from inside the house. Couldn't be an animal, unless Animal from the Muppets was living in the walls. I never believed in spirits, so that thought didn't cross my mind. That changed when I found the bongos. I cleaned all the items and put them on a table. As I sat staring at them, another previously unthinkable thought came to me: perhaps I can contact the spirit of the beatnik. I decided to have a séance. I sat in the middle of the living room floor, with the bongos in my lap, and the beret on my head. I lit the candle in the wine bottle, then started drumming. After a while of this, I said, "If there is a spirit here that would like to make itself known, please do so now." Nothing happened. I repeated this process a few more times, and got a few more nothings. I was feeling very silly and about to give up when a bolt of energy went through me. I saw him. Dancing around in the living room, beating on the bongos. He was a young, strong man. I couldn't interact with him, but I felt the energy he generated. It was exhilarating. I got up and started dancing and drumming around the room. The beatnik's living room was bare. There was no real furniture, just some crates to sit on. There were booze bottles and broken glass on the floor. The walls were covered with more of the tedious words, all in caps, all in red paint. I have no idea how long I danced, but I was beat by the time I finished. When he was finished, the beatnik painted another word on the wall: RADIOACTIVITEDIUM. Then he quaffed a bottle of booze and threw it at the word on the wall. The bottle shattered. I was jolted out of the vision. The next night, all it took was hitting the drum once and I was off. After I woke up from my third night of revelry, I heard a ghostly voice say, "Go to where it's at, cat, the place of the hat." What a blast! I thought. This is like Field of Dreams. I figured the place of the hat was Piere's, a club near where I live. Piere's, Pierre, French name, beret. That had to be it. I put the beret on and went there. Not a single person in the club, other than me, had a beret on. And everybody looked about twenty years younger than me. The music was pummeling. When I entered, I shouted, because I had to shout to be heard, "I want some hot jazz!" "Eww!" was the response I got from one of the kids. "When are they gonna blow some hot jazz?! I wanna hear some bebop. It's the ginchiest!" As you can tell, by this time I was talking like a beatnik. I could see the kids were laughing at me, so I decided it was time to fall out. Then I realized the place of the hat meant the inside of the wall where I had found the other stuff. Next to where the beret had been, there was a record. It was even more covered by cobwebs than the beret, so I could see how I missed it before. It was an OG Savoy Records' 78 with "Ko Ko" by Charlie Parker's Ri Bop Boys on it. I gave the record a good cleaning, then rushed over and put it on the turntable. I have a turntable that can play 78s. As soon as the needle hit the record, I was off. I felt the beatnik's emotion when he listened to the record. Parker had died in '55, and the death had hit the beatnik hard. He was crying while dancing to it. I was crying while dancing to it. I looked in the mirror that night and said, "The Beat is me!" I saw our faces blur together. After that, during each rumpus, I would break glasses and scrawl beatnik craziness on the wall. There were no more thoughts about cleanliness. The living room floor began to look like a mirror ball had exploded on it. I had gone over to the wild side. So I did this night after night after night. I couldn't get enough. Then one night, I saw what the beatnik used for paint. He picked up a shard of broken glass and cut into his arm. The blood dripped down into a bowl. I stood there, stunned, and was about to do the same thing, but I was able to hold myself back. And that was it. I came to my senses. Had I cut my arm, I might have become permanently enmeshed with the beatnik. We would have been blood brothers. I put all the items back into the wall and sealed it back up. I very much wanted to keep the record for my collection, but knew it was bewitched. I did some research and was able to find out a little bit about the beatnik. It's a sad story. He was an alcoholic, and it took its toll. He had friends when he was younger, but drove them away as his condition worsened. When he died, he looked quite a bit older than his 47 years. But he didn't die alone. There used to be a dive bar here in Fort Wayne called the Scorpion. They had mud wrestling at the Scorpion. He was totally hammered and drowned in the mud while wrestling two women at once. What a way to go. He died in 1977, the year I was born. I still hear the drumming. I ignore it. Steve, I know you don't have as much time to read as you'd like, but I offer this to you as a cautionary tale. Neal Cassady, the Beat muse and wild man, used to live in Denver. If you ever see an old jazz record with a price that seems too good to be true, don't buy it. It could be attached to Neal. And then Neal could be attached to you. You may find yourself saying something like, "We are actually fourth dimensional beings in a third dimensional body inhabiting a second dimensional world!" That's a quote from Neal. Your grandson's speech will evolve and yours will devo. You'll spew nothing but beatnik gibberish. "What happened to grandpa?" your grandson will ask. "Just like how kids grow up, some old people grow back to kids," his mom will answer. On his first day of school, you may say something to him like, "I saw the brightest kids in my kindergarten deranged from eating crayons and paste / I saw the corona of Crayola. I saw the ectoplasm of Elmer's. Such a waste!" Then you will throw your sippy cup at the wall. Don't let that happen to you! Beat's Me could become Beat's You. Just be cool, granddaddy-o. Catch you on the flip side. "Baby, I've been / Breaking glass in your room again"

Anything after 1990 is a new album. I remember seeing Black Flag play the slower songs live for the first time. It didn’t go over very well. The fans didn’t get belligerent but kind of just stood there. I like that first Sinead O’Connor. Jazz vocals is a big no-no for me. I think I’m done with buying Jazz. In fact once I finish purging the Classic Rock I’m going to start on the Jazz.
