This is a great time in history to be making music: Quality studio equipment has become more and more affordable, which makes it possible for home (or bedroom) studio recordists to produce great sounding tracks.
Today, we're putting it to the test: We're doing a back to back comparison of affordable recording rig (Total cost: $4,300) and the best recording equipment at Sunset Sound (Prince, The Rolling Stones, Whitney Houston)
What does that mean?
Audient iD14 interface & ASP800 preamp ($950 value) against Sunset Sound's custom built console in Studio 3
(estimated value of 1 million dollars).
12 Lewitt microphones ($3,250 value) against Sunset's beautiful mic collection of Neumann U67s, M49s and FET47s, AKGs and Sennheisers ($100,000 value)
IK Multimedia AmpliTube 4 ($99 value) against the best amps & cabs Sunset has to offer ($10,000 value)

I am an "In the box" producer but I still watch these videos start to end because I feel that it helps me visualise where the mics should be and how the drums should fit into a mix. Even though I'm working with samples. Audient interfaces are awesome IMO, sound super clean and flat so you can drive a signal however you want later. The D.I on the interface can get really aggressive and have some bite if you drive a Bass into though, which is awesome. Thanks for another great video Warren 😊🎧

I used AmpliTube at all time. Every time I asked my guitarist to record DI and later on we spent couples of hours to play around with different amps, mic combo and mic placement in AmpliTube. Probably will run through an outboard comp/EQ to get some 'analog' warmth if we think we need it. It ends up to be beefy.

*Edit* : I rest my case, I've NEVER heard better recordings on drums. Just downloaded and openened Pro Tools. The sessions was flat in, and sounded 100000 times better then any of my final mixes.. Damn.. Back to school.. Wow! Why didnt i see this untill now.. :D Cant wait to hear the Lewitt setup on my "little" setup here in Denmark, Europe. Love your work, and your dedication. @BengtSkogvall
@BengtSkogvall 6 лет назад
What a great video Warren! Thank you so much for making them! And what great sound those Lewitt mics produce! As with your last test, I feel the most sensitive part of a drum kit is the overhead. It is a bit difficult to compare here, as you compressed the Neumanns on the way in. Still, the Neumanns really get a run for their money and with the Lewitts, it looks very likely that you could get results that sound very very close to that of the Neumanns. That in itself is a fantastic result. Considering that the Neumanns cost about 50 times as much as the Lewitts, even more so. The only difference I could spot was on the closed Hi Hat. It sounded slightly cleaner on the Neumann, but then again, as the sound from the Neumanns was treated on the way in, this may very well explain the difference. Really blown away with the fantastic results of the Lewitts! Another very pleasant surprise in your video was the results of the Lewitt Tom mics. They sound absolutely marvellous! I have in the past used a mic set from Thomann for micing Toms and the Lewitts would be a huge step up. The sound of the Audient is really fantastic. Listening to the DI signal of the guitar or bass, it is increadibly clean. As you compressed the signal on the way to the sunset studio AD converter, it is not really comparable. On a level playing field, where you send the identical signal to both converters, I do not think one would be able to tell them apart.

Massive fan of Audient stuff. I have an ASP008 which is a great piece for the price. This video further enforces that cheaper equipment is also really good and useable. Recently, I recorded some shaker tracks for a project through a Shure KSM137 into an A-Designs Pacifica, then for a pre-pro demo, just recorded shaker into an SM58 that was already plugged into my Apollo. It turns out the SM58/Apollo combo actually sounded better to my ears.

@Achase4u
@Achase4u 6 лет назад
You can certainly get great results with more affordable gear these days. The price of a fine mic now vs a fine mic in 1950 is quite different. And we have many options at every price point. The Lewitt room mics sound amazing, but so do those great Neumanns. Both great, both different. So much of the warmth of old records is the mica too, isnt it? I mean, listen to the u67s and m49s. Mid range and warmth. Stack all those mics up on a whole mix and you have an old school sound! Lewitts would make for a clearer mix I think.

Hey Warren! Good video! Im following you since a while now, amazing content! Watch out!: At 28:53 of this video you compared the guitar tones (printed on the desk or the audient). While listening to the first couple they were panned hard right-left, while the second set of guitars were both in the middle. This might be why the audient couple are sounding "better" or at the same time the desk-printed a bit dull? I have the feeling I might be missing something tho but its just something I noticed while watching the video! Again, amazing content Warren! Cheers!

Great stuff, Warren - Being a home recordist with an Audient iD14 myself, I'm interested to know how you recorded Christian's guitar through the Amplitube; things like sample latency settings on the interface, input levels, etc. I use a DI box to track guitars with my system, but I'm forced into using a latency setting of 128 samples on the Audient, as setting 64 samples leads to too much crackling and instability (should have mentioned I'm using it with Positive Grid Bias FX or a Brainworx Engl E646 VS amp sim). I have used the front input on the Audient too, but get a lot of input clipping, even though I take the time to meticulously set levels prior to recording. Sorry about the long winded question! Much respect and kind regards!

Hi Folks...since this topic is about "Affordable" Equipment, I'd be remiss if I did not let folks out here know that Presonus just did a major game changer upgrade. Targeted most specifically for Home Studio Producers. And before anyone starts fussing, I'm not a sales person or anything like that for Presonus, but I do use Studio One for my DAW. I like the software a lot. But that's me...no reflection on any one else's products or choices of products. Last year Presonus introduced a device called the Fader Port 8. A lot of folks who use other DAW's like Pro Tools and Logic are already familiar with Presonus's original "Fader Port" and know it's adaptable and plays nice with everyone's DAW not just Presonus software. Well Presonus has just released the FADER PORT 16. Yep, 16 tracks now that do everything and more that the Original single fader Fader Port became famous for, then the Version 8, and now 16 tracks. All automated Faders, individual controls over everything you can think of so go check it out whether you use Pro Tools like Warren, or Studio One like David Mood...doesn't matter, it's a game changer ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PBBuInO61wk.html

Love this video, great examples, but one mistake: during the DI comparison you forgot to pan the guitars left-right, that could be a reason you found the other one better.

Hi rolaca11 thanks for the comment! Definitely don't believe that the positioning changes the tone at all! Inexpensive? LoL....a lot of that is gear and such that I *aspire* to have. Can tell you're an old Pro....lucky to get a chance to learn from a skilled person like you. No way I will hae that kinda setup anytime too soon....One Day!! Right now, I "Best" mic is a Rode NTK (great mic, actually).... Also have a pair of Vintage Shure SM-81s....pair of SM-57s..... a Sennheiser e906 (awesome insrument mic...wow!!).... last week got a Great deal on a couple cheapo ribbon mics (mxl r40...Nady rms-5) and the only reason I bothered was the extra low price, but they do sound different.

Hi David Belcher an 'old pro' haha. Thanks for the great comment! For me there is entry mics, then inexpensive mics, then of course Neumanns etc. I love the U67, however that one mic is around the same price as the other 12 mics combined! I intend to do a shootout/review with entry level mics as the Rode NT1 has changed the way people make music! Have a marvelous time recording and mixing many thanks Warren

@bennettpan1083

What Warren described as 'expensive' mic set is really the 'gold standard' combination of mic for drum recording back to 70-90s, with the console (SSL/Neve/API/Trident etc). That's still being used in many best of the best studio. One vintage U67/U47 worth a lot but you need two for OH/Room. But those 'inexpensive' mic are more 'down-to-earth' or affordable I would say. Recording drums are always expensive if you record all close miking as well as OH/Room. I heard someone recorded drums with 4 mic only but the result is damn great as well. Rode NTK is a bang for the buck and you will never go wrong with this mic.

Hi Warren - in regards to the 640rex kick mic...I was close to buying one second hand and then discovered the quoted self noise figure of the condenser half being 28db... That's really high and seems like it'd be a problem to me? I'd have expected something around 20db or better. Have you ever noticed the same noise being high?
@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro 6 лет назад
Hi Clinton Maher thanks for the comment! No, I've never noticed the noise level of the 640rex being high at all. I know Kenny Aronoff and a lot of other great drummers and engineers love it for kick. Probably best to hear it to make up your mind. I use the condenser side on every recording I do from Aerosmith, Ace Frehley and Marc Broussard and never considered it to be noisy. Have a marvelous time recording and mixing many thanks Warren

Hi Mtaalas thanks for your great comment! indeed, however that noise floor is so low you'd have to be recording exceptionally almost inaudible signal for it to be an issue and this is a Kick drum mic! My guess is from experience of recording 1,000 of drummers that won't be an issue! Have a marvelous time recording and mixing many thanks Warren

Hey Warren, thanks for the video and the multitracks. It's always a pleasure to me to play around with the files. Personally, I prefer in this case the Sunset Sound Files - these seem more musical and it sounds more like Rock'n Roll - but it's my own subjective opinion. I'm using the Audient iD22 for a long time and I love it. I mixed the song completely in the box with Pro Tools and a bunch of third party plugins. Maybe I'll do another mix with the Levit and Audient stuff soon. Cheers and greetings from Germany... soundcloud.com/frank-edge/minute-to-minute

It's not a fair test thou. You ran expensive gears through an expensive console. And in parallel you used inexpensive mic running through an inexpensive audio interface. Honestly those expensive mic on great console gave more weight and bigger sound to your drum. They worth with their price tag. But those recorded from Lewitt mic and Audient interface were very great especially when you took the price difference into consideration. Faster transient that might be suitable in some situation. U67 & M149 had more depth which made your drum sound huge. But Lewitt was comparable. I'm amazed with the Lewitt kick mic. The attitude of the kick from this mic was simply amazing. Thanks Warren for a great video! Sorry I can only listen on my MacBook speaker but amazing.
@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro 6 лет назад
Hi Bennett Pan I agree! I'm not into the science of it! For me if I'm in a great studio I'm going to use everything at its disposal! If I only have mics and an Interface then that's all I have, so for me the unfair comparison is the best comparison! It's how does my home set compare to spending it's complete value every day in a world class studio! Haha (in this case every three days the amount you spend on the studio equals the value of the cheaper set up) Have a marvelous time recording and mixing many thanks Warren
@bennettpan1083
@bennettpan1083 6 лет назад
Haha. I absolutely agree with you Warren. In this era, I don't think we have to stick onto a 100k console with 96 tracks to get a great record done. More people work on a portable interface and use the onboard preamp, and the end result is great. Some great mixers mix ITB but it still sounds great. For me, the placement, quality and suitability of the mic (regardless the price tag) determined how great the sound you can get. You proved the point as well. Both set of mic are great but the attitude or tone is different probably due to the different response of the mic. I won't say which one is "better" but depends on how it fits into your song. The Lewitt kick mic is simply amazing and it sounds like a polished kick even without compression and EQ. My friend plans to start a project studio and probably I will send him your clip for his reference. Thanks for your great video and response!

I remember the days when talent had alot to do with the sound of the record...not anymore. It seems anyone can sound good now with amplitube etc...kinda disappoints me actually...too easy for artists to make a record and fool everyone...till you buy a ticket and they suck live. I will never record like this...I will always do it old school...and know my talent made the record...not software.
