We've been brainstorming an idea to record an album that would create a fantasy world through music and album art. We got this idea after spending time listening to the dungeon-synth genre.
This week we did some demo recording for this idea. We used our Fostex A8 reel-to-reel this time to switch things up.

its that a 1/4 or 1/2 tape. 8 channels on a 1/4 newer heard of. some hot Vokal, looks like 5+ db
@bucksmoonlightrevival
@bucksmoonlightrevival 7 месяцев назад
it's 1/4" tape. Pretty uncommon. Just the Fostex A8, The Fostex 80, and the Tascam 388 are the only one's I've heard of :)

Is that running at 15 ips? It's definitely fast. That would help make up for cramming 8 tracks onto the tape, yes?
@bucksmoonlightrevival
@bucksmoonlightrevival 6 месяцев назад
ya it's 15 ips :) techically each track is the same width as a cassette 4-track recorder, but for sure this fostex is way more hifi. 8x the speed of a cassette makes a big difference, but I'm sure there's all kinds of electrical stuff that affects the fidelity too

Interesting. I wanted to get my hands on one of those in the 80s but they were out of my price range. Did you need to use a mixer with that?
@bucksmoonlightrevival
@bucksmoonlightrevival 5 месяцев назад
ya it's just a basic recorder, no preamps or anything included. I guess to make it more affordable for the average home musician. There was a mixer that came out around the same time I think to pair with it though
@wehappyfewmusic
@wehappyfewmusic Год назад
Cool tune and love the VU meters on the A8. How does the sound quality compare to your 488?
@bucksmoonlightrevival
@bucksmoonlightrevival Год назад
much higher fidelity because it's basically twice the width of tape. but still lofi enough to sound cool and vintage :)

Hi from Québec! Beautiful music, very inspiring! What was the workflow? First, recording the master with tape (to have a warm sound), and then through a mixer, then to a computer with Protools or something like that?
@bucksmoonlightrevival
@bucksmoonlightrevival 7 месяцев назад
Ya we like to do all the recording (including all effects such as reverb) to tape without an edits, then we use an audio interface to bring all the tracks into the DAW and do a simple mix (levels, panning, EQ mostly)
@raybossa

Awesome! What is your signal chain for the vocals?
@bucksmoonlightrevival
@bucksmoonlightrevival Год назад
It's a tube condenser mic going into an "ART" tube mic preamp, through my BOSS reverb pedal into the recorder. although our entire self-titled album was recorded using a cheap dynamic mic through the same preamp and reverb.

@bucksmoonlightrevival
@bucksmoonlightrevival 10 месяцев назад
awesome cool recorder! we've got a Tascam M-1B basic rack mixer just for listening while recording. for the real mix we like to bounce all the tracks into our DAW using a Tascam US-16x08 interface

With this particular unit, am I able to send audio from my computer, have it processed through the tape, and then record straight back into the DAW on a new track?

for sure, it has button to choose between "tape / source"

@@bucksmoonlightrevival magic, my friend has one he's not using and he's kindly giving it to me. I would definitely like to use it as a multi-track as intended, but I'd also like to bounce out stems to it from DAW sessions. I'm assuming as it's 1/4" and 8 track, that bouncing an entire mix out on this probably isn't the thing to do from a fidelity point of view? Thanks for the info, video's great.
@bucksmoonlightrevival
@bucksmoonlightrevival Год назад
@@thehornsandkeysguy ya you're probably better to get a stereo 2 track recorder to do that. but this is a great multitrack recorder for sure. we're planning to use it this winter /spring to record our new album

All tracks were individually bounced onto my computer using a tascam audio interface and mixed in my DAW 😀 all effects were done live during the recording using guitar pedals, it's how I prefer rather than using effects on my computer afterwards

So good with headphones. Was the production tough to sync up video with tape speed varying?
@bucksmoonlightrevival
@bucksmoonlightrevival 2 года назад
Thanks! 🙂 when I make these types of videos I always film the main VU meter shot at the same time that I bounce the mix to my computer. That way it syncs up prefect. especially important in our videos mixing on the portastudio

@bucksmoonlightrevival 2 года назад
@@patrickyeo2016 sometimes shots like that might just be "for show" but not the exact take you hear on the tape. filming yourself recording a song is actually really hard, you're recording two things at once, so sometimes it's much more efficient to do some editing magic lol 😄most people probably don't question it or figure it out, but I guess you're not most people lol

@@bucksmoonlightrevival lol when first getting into tape I had head scratchers syncing with video, or even.. recording each track separately into my DAW 😅.. not my brightest moment. I wasn’t sure if you had some magical software gifted from a level 80 wizard that knew how to match the speed. Haha

How to mix or masteringn song?
@bucksmoonlightrevival
@bucksmoonlightrevival 2 месяца назад
I digitize all 8 tracks to my PC using an audio interface, and then mix it using FL Studio :)
@YoungNino2017
@YoungNino2017 Год назад
how is it 8 tracks? Does it split the 4 tracks into two separate tracks?
@bucksmoonlightrevival
@bucksmoonlightrevival Год назад
exactly that. we did our first album on a Tascam 488mki portastudio, the same thing with 8 tracks. This means that each track has less fidelity than if there were only 4, but when the deck is built to do 8 tracks with high-bias tapes, it does it well
