This is for anyone in the comments that have used the Neve original and this BAE. What’s the difference between The BAE and the Neve. Isn’t The bae trying to copy the Neve? Why not just get the Neve which is the original? Anyone comment please before I make my purchase if the Neve 1073spx
Can you do one on tracking vocals through compressor also? Really helped to hear you go through the tone. Just got a wa73eq and wa76 to start off w hardware. Still confused by the insert of the wa73 cause I figure you'd want to control gain into the wa76....and no bypass on the wa76
Hi Warren, just curious but I notice your red knob is lower and your output is maxed out for the EG/AG signals. Is there an advantage to getting the best out of the 1073 with the output maxed vs. pushing the red knob more? Thanks!
Hi Warren. I just wanted to thank you for your show and great advice. As you know, I am a guitarist primarily and song writer with a decent studio. I have been holding back from recording my instrumental Cd because my tones are never good enough (let it go. LOL). I was diagnosed with an illness a while back and needed to put a rush on my CD before its too late. Your advice and recommendations in particular the BEA 1073 and the Lewitt LCT 940 have enabled me to begin the final process. Thank you so much. You don't know what this means to me. Kind Regards as always.
Hi +Jak Leyton Wow! You Rock!! Thanks very much for your kind words I really appreciate it! Excited to hear your instrumental CD now!! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
+Tiger Audio, Inc. This is the acoustic style I am doing. This was recorded with a Pizzo obviously but I want to mic things and I am having trouble getting the right positions. This is a song I wrote called "Audry" www.numubu.com/DATA/CHANSON/85A22886-EC1C-D434-17B86C845B73FD90.mp3
Hello Warren! Thank you for another great video as ever. This videos is right up my alley as I own a BAE1073 mp. I had some concern about using a tube microphone with this pre. I'm still fairly new at understanding how to power different types of mics and have been a bit intimidated at buying anything other than a condenser. My question is "How would you go about powering a tube through a BAE 1073? in order to receive a proper signal into Pro Tools?" I've never had a tube mic available to know for sure, but it seems as though the BAE would need a 48V or DI to appear to be accepting any signal through it and I understand tube's musn't use phantom power. Is it as simple as turning on a tube mic's power supply, as well as the BAE's, and leaving all the pre's buttons unengaged? Pardon the elementary question, but I thought who better to ask than the great Warren Huart! Thanks for your time.
Thanks for the great question Cha Cha Malone Yes you are correct you do not need phantom power on your tube mic, however it won't damage it, but make sure it's not engaged. I would just make sure the output gain to the mic pre is turned all the way down when you power up the mic, although a good quality tube mic won't send a thump through the pre. Let me know how it goes! What Tube Mic did you get! I really appreciate the question! Have a marvelous time recording, many thanks Warren
Wow, I stumble upon this comment 2 years later and have come to update that after your help i've been using a Sony c800g ever since and love it! One of the records I recorded on the Sony+BAE 1073 combo ended up going platinum! I've been eager to try out your new 1173~ Many thanks Warren!
Warren, looking for some advice. I’m considering getting the Neve 1073N. It’s a stand alone pre/Eq. The BAE comes with the output trim feature, something the 1073N doesn’t have. How important would you say having that trim/output knob is?
Whoa dude when you kick in that 220 my subs are shakin the room. LOL I don't know about that but from my end but I'd say it's a little much. ; ) As far as the Bass go's I like it without the EQ. Cheers...
I would go for bass first, and drums, guitar and the rest after that, if there’s a great bass part! Like Robbie Shakespeare said: ‘ A good basspart needs some boosted 250 Hz. You built the rest around that...’ That’s what he did with his own music, Grace Jones and Talking Heads: eq? Bass first. Most producers do it the other way around... There’s always too much low end in the kick (🤢) drums and guitars... Silly.
The first good gear I purchased were the Brent Averill 1073 stereo pairs mounted in a rack mount unit.Until I purchased them, I didn't realise just what good pre's and EQ's could do for my recordings. I purchased BAE products as well. I love the sound, the prices are reasonable too.
Hi warren, first of all thank you for your great job and dedication. Could you please tell me what is the headphone your using on the video? And second, I'm considering a pair of 1073 type mic preamp to track guitars, what's your opinion on the warm audio wa273 Eq ? Compared to BAE? Thank you.
I just got this for vocals. Greatest decision I’ve ever made!! Did so much research and decided to go with this + apollo twin x quad + Manley reference cardioid. The sound is mixed so good from just the raw audio alone wow. Can you do a tutorial on vocals and this bae?? I’m clipping though and don’t know what I’m doing at all lol but it’s still beautiful sounding
@@johnhuston4806 Keep in mind that Manley Ref C has a very hot output and it can overload mic pre input. I heard that some people have to use an in-line pads (attenuators like Shure and AT) in the chain between mic and pre . It's crazy.
Wow absolutely cool I love the Neve sound a lot , I own a stereo pair of 1290 preamps and I use it pretty much on everything Everytime the same great result! Thanks Warren to share this video I really can't wait to have 1073 on my hands and use its beautiful eq session on recordings Have a nice recording time Cheers Chrys
Thanks Ashly X I appreciate you watching the video and your message! Yes the 1073, particularly this one with the Jensen Transformer on the Di input and the switchable impedance sounds amazing! Have a marvelous time recording! Many thanks Warren
Hey Warren! Amazing video !! This may sound like a beginner's question but does your signal from the BAE goes to a AD/DA converter? If so which one do you recommend/use ? Been looking into recording my own guitar tracks for some session work, would absolutely love your input on what the whole signal chain should be ! Thanks a bunch
When I was ordering a new pair of preamps the subject of BAE came up. Sales described them as top quality components from input to output. They are in use by some of the industries biggest names. As well, this demo is testament. So I inquired about the UK Sound 1173, and will try one when it becomes available. Thanks Warren.
Are you using flatwounds Warren? I think bass guitar placement and tone is what separates good producers/engineers from the bad... Jacquire King's engineering on the bass guitar for Kings of Leon's "Only By The Night" was EXTREMELY enlightening on something that people over simplify/overlook... I love hearing your take on bass tone cause its very "motown/modern" which is timeless. Thanks for these great reviews
Thanks Zakk Johnson I really appreciate your kind words. I do have a Bass with Flat Wounds. Yes I love Motown Bass tones, John Deacon's tone was a;ways a favourite of mine as well. Have a marvelous time recording, many thanks Warren
I beg your pardon.. a play between Pre transformer 1200/300 ohm and post vary impedance also which create color and drive.. see my blue quad preamp no Facebook if you scroll pictures where i have pre and post impedance control on API style single stage preamp.
Hi +martiandmarti Thanks for your comment! Agreed it really does colour the sound as in the video when I do it on the acoustic guitar! Have a marvellous time recording! Many thanks Warren
also I forgot. I don't know BAE but the very best 1073 clone there is is from AML in Manchester UK.. DIY rack or ready made 500 style. I recommend the rack one because the Power stage is superb. In every ways it is the closest clone of the original..Carnhill transformers and Inductors.. AML..
Hi +martiandmarti That's wonderful to hear that manufacturers are using the the Carnhill (St Ives) Transformers! It's one of the things that first attracted me to BAE back in 2000 when they first started making the 1073 again using the right Transformers, good to here that the newer companies like AML are also using the right transformers! Also interestingly the owner of BAE is also from Manchester in England! Small world! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
thank you very much Warren for your replies.. here is the link to illustrate the pre and post input Micpre transformer vari impedances: facebook.com/469574086408107/photos/a.473877312644451.110768.469574086408107/944164688949042/?type=3&theater
Hey Warren, Just wanted to say your videos are amazing! I'm an aspiring producer and I'm been looking to improve my electric/acoustic guitar & bass recordings. I normally go directly into my presonus firebox, cause its very noisy where I live!!! I find my acoustics are boomy too much too end, my guitars and bass sound OK, but I think it can be so much better? possibly with this BAE 1073, or even maybe DMP with a great di?, would love to hear your opinion please? do you think this would also wprk with vocals? Thank you for your inspiring me to give the best music I can give!
Hi Kia Mataki yes a great mic pre can really help! Watch my recording acoustic guitar video for techniques to avoid booming from the acoustic! Thanks very much for your kind words I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Hi Warren! Could you do a side-by-side with a BAE 1073 and a NEW AMS Neve 1073? I did a side-by-side with a BAE 1073 DMP and a new AMS Neve 1073DPA and I found that the BAE was bit brighter, but the AMS Neve had a bit more gain. I did a few other tests as well: I compared an AMS 1073N with a 1073LB Pre with and without the eq LB, and found the LB to be slightly darker. I compared a new AMS 1073 with a vintage original and found it to be softer sounding compared to the AMS. I also tried an original 1066 and 1064, and found them both to be "sleepy" sounding. Anything you can enlighten me on is much appreciated!
Hi +67Stu Thanks for the fantastic question!! That's interesting results! I know that I personally prefer the BAE as one of the biggest parts of the Mic Pre's sound is the Transformer and BAE is still using the Carnhill/St Ives Transformers that the original 1073's used. Ultimately they are all wonderful products! The Vintage Neve may have needed to be recapped if it sounded softer. I worked with Jim Scott on his old RCA Neve and he had it completely recapped and he said it sounded the way it sounded when he first used it when it was new! Sometimes people idea of 'Vintage' means doesn't pass signal very well any more! Haha Great topic for discussion! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
AH! GOOD POINT! Is it worth it than to pay the exorbitant price for a vintage Neve only to pay even more to have it recapped? Or would it be more sound to pay for a brand new AMS or BAE that would be using the exact same components that would be used to recap the original? If this is the case, than the recapped original should sound nearly identical to the new AMS or BAE, depending on which one is closer to the original.
@@67Stu Hi! did you compare AMS 1073 handwired "Classic" module to a vintage 1073? Or it was AMS 1073 DPA vs vintage 1073? I had AMS 1073 Dpa and sound was really sharp in the high mids, not smooth at all. I wonder maybe AMS handwired modules is sound smoother?
Thanks for the vid Warren! What's your approach to record/mix acoustuc guitar for a singer/songwriter type of song? Especially, how do you treat the dynamics? I sometimes find it hard to find the right balance between loud and quiet notes. Parallel compressing seems to work without sacrificing the transients, but I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.
Thanks Ati Shephard I really appreciate it! I love parallel compression on vocals and it's great on acoustic guitars with finger picking parts. Have a marvelous time recording! Many thanks Warren
Hi jbeebs1 thanks for the great question! It depends on which Amp I use, but this one was my Yamaha Pacifica using Klutz cables into a Carl Martin Ecotone Pedal into my Marshall JMP Mk2 into a Marshall 4x12 being Mic'd by an SM57 to the BAE 1073 to Pro Tools. Have a marvelous time recording! Many thanks Warren
I don't know why people insist on buying channel strips that are all together. I built my own strip using the WA12 MK2 (black) mic preamp, a Tonelux EQ5P Parametric EQ that can also be used like a Pultec EQ, and an LL2A compressor limiter from Little Labs. There's no channel strip better than one u piece together using all quality components. Trust me.
hi warren, you definitely put up the best recording workshop on youtube! with something so complicated as recording music, and so many passionate people sitting alone in their home studios in need of advice, your show is an immeasurable remedy for all the doubts and questions that lie on our hearts... now my question: have you ever used vintage german fet modules, like the siemens v276 or w295b, and if so what do you think of it? i'm asking because i got some last week and people say they're neveish... cheers
Hi +ProfDrDrN0 Wow!!! You ROCK!! Thanks very much indeed! So glad to be able to help! I have a pair of V72's, they sound great, but I don't use them very often. I honestly find 1073 and 312 does everything I want! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
I like your videos thx for sharing. Neve and Universal Audio 610 solo for vocal . Your opinion please. Thx Also I thought Neves they have Charchill transformers.
@@Producelikeapro thx for replying. What do think of Warm Audio. Also Golden Age 73 with Charchill transformer. Also any one of colones because of price . I do this for hobby helping old friends to leave something behind for their grand children. I've been spending just to help . You know where I'm coming from . Thx
Warren hi, I am looking at getting a Neve 1073 DPA, it has no EQ, does that mean the EQ is set flat? and would you advise getting the EQ version, its a lot more expensive. Hope you are doing marvellously well btw.
bae 1028 mic preamp vs bae 1073 mic pre preamp I can only afford one. Warren which one would you pick ? I'm recording one instrument at a time . Lead vocals , lead guitar/rhythm, bass. Mostly Country and Blues rock. MacBook pro m1 Monterey DAW Cubase 12pro, Neumann TLM 103, rack mount UAD LA 610 hardware Apollo 6x. I'm also concerting purchasing the Burl Audio B2 Bomber ADC 2-channel AD Converter by passing the Apollo 6x converters. Any advice or feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much for all the great tips and info...😎
Hi Warren, thanks for the video. I also think the "nosey" sound of the typical Jazz bass is heard in the low mids specially around 250-500Hz ? Every time I listen to ToTo, I hear Micheal Poccaro's tone is somewhat mid-boosted which has a nice fill. And everytime I listen to "She's an easy lover" by Phil Collins, I really can not hear any bass every though Nathan East is playing a nice groove. I think the bass was lost in the mix. My personal opinion!
After being thoroughly disgusted with my ART MPA II I need more headroom and depth after looking at all the NEVES clones I went with the BAE DMP what I'm wondering have the music man 5 string bass with a passive pickup... I took out the preamp reverse phased the pickup so I can get the old school music man sound..... would you recommend running, direct line in then putting an EQ on the channel while recording or just direct?
Hey Warren, please answer this question for me. I have a couple of low budget pieces for my audio chain. A WA 47 jr mic, a Warm Audio WA73 and some $100.00 compressors and EQ going into an M AUDIO M Track and into Studio 1 Professional. My question is does better gear make an actual difference. I have the money for gear but don't want to waste if it wont make a major difference. I hear other people on you tube with voices similar to mine but the sound is 100 times warmer. With my gear clarity sounds harsh and warm tones always sound muddy. Do high end mics/ pre amps / compressors and EQ's make a big difference? Just the outboard compression I recently added made a difference. I'm wondering before I spend $10,000 would a professional vocal chain Mic, Preamp, EQ and Compressor make a difference. I'm looking forward to hearing back from you because you've always been great about responding. Any feedback and recommendations for gear would be appreciated. Thanks
The "magic 1073" ... it's just Voodoo! But noone who spent more than 2000 bucks for a "magic" device would ever admit that. Back in the 70ties, when "HiFi" was new, maybe these expensive preamps made sense. But these days ... go directly into your DAW. If you need it: Install a virtual 1073. Even if it would work: Equipment does not make you a better musician. Save the money to get some lessons on your instrument or buy at least a reasonable instrument. P.S.: What happens at 19:46 ? Without touching any of the knobs, the sound changes drastically, just before you say "...withou eqing". More drastic than any changes that the BAE 1073 causes?! Can't be the EQ, because you turn that several seconds later on. Was there any postprocessing of the audio track?
Nice seeing this vid now, 6 yrs later. I've had my BAE 1073MPF Dual since '12 and love it. The ONLY thing I'd love to see is this same test - with the 1073 and an Aurora Audio GTQ2. I would PAY to see that. But... I'll be paying soon for a GTQ2 so I'll be doing this same test myself! Ha!
Hey Warren! do you have any tricks in regards to dialing in a gain level? Ive been leaving my output knob between the middle 3 dots (-1 for a dirtier sound and +1 for a cleaner sound) and then adjusting the gain until my level in pro tools peaking at 3-5 dB. my methodology is that the center output dot is +/- 0 at the output stage, so when I dial it back one dot and give the red knob an extra push, im getting just a tiny bit of breakup ("the neve sound"). The +1 on the output for clean sounds acts kind of like my mom using her arm as my seat belt. Would you mind critiquing my understanding?
You!! I would subscribe 2 times if i could. Realy cool info. need to watch all videos 2. beacuse i need to write down all the good info i get. THERE IS SO MUCH OF IT
Hey Warren, how do you make sure your acoustic doesnt introduce unwanted distortion in your mix? I place a KSM44 12" away from 12th fret, low cut around 100hz, around -10db max volume. When I playback on say, an iphone 7, it sounds distorted for whatever reason. Do you know whats going on? Im still a newbie at tracking acoustics.
Great demo. Thumbs up. But I don't recall you driving the pre (cranking the gain, pulling back the trim). Would have like to hear that on the bass for sure.
Hi +Hellfire Beats Great question! Unless the interface has a dedicated 'Instrument' input (many do) then the level from say an electric guitar or bass guitar wouldn't be enough to drive a 'line input' which is designed to take hotter signals. I hope that helps? Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Recently I've been running a dbx 166xs via the insert point on my GA pre 73, and when I use that comp now, theres serious attenuation, it doesnt match up to the GR I'm seeing on the comp though... anyone experience this? Hope the dbx isnt gone bad in some way..
Hi +Joe “JazEGeoff” Sepe There's an insert on the GA pre? Have you tried running directly out of the pre into the compressor to your DAW? Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
No I've always used the insert. I'll try going from pre to compressor to my mackie onyx firewire board. I havent had to do that in the past though. Oh well thanks!
Thank you warren for posting, I really like the quality of sound and the different possibilities that this interface provides. I always enjoy your videos. Cheers. 😊
This thing sounds so good! i'm getting one this month! what would be your goto hardware compressor to track vocals along with this beast ? Much appreciated friend!
Build a channel strip using separate processors, you'll come out better. That way your components are separate. Trust me it's the best way to go!!!! Me personally, I bought the WA12 MK2 (black), then I bought a Tonelux EQ5P surgical Parametric EQ that can also be used like a Pultec EQ, then I bought an LL2A compressor limiter from Little Labs. That's a chain that I studied REALLY hard before putting it together and implementing it as my "go to" vocal/Di chain. The EQ is like two different EQs, and the compressor can take on three different attributes of three different compressors, not to mention one unit by itself has mastering fidelity capabilities.
If used for vocal tracking with the UAD Apollo, would you recommend the EQ version or will the preamp only version be great as well? For me its either going to be a Heritage HA73 EQ or BAE preamp only version.. I haven't had real life experience with these but I love the musical tone of this BAE..
Hi +Luis Marban Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! I will definitely get to a mixing acoustics video! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Love the video man great vibes, question? What aize speaker are the ones behind you not the Yamaha but the black specks name start with. A g lol sorry dont knw the name. Thanks in advance
When you're sending the electric guitar through the 1073, where is the 1073 in your chain? Is it between the guitar and amplifier, or is it between the cab mic and the interface?
Hi +Chad Prewett I go Microphone, SM57 to 1073 to Interface. Thanks very much I really appreciate it!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
+Produce Like A Pro Very good, thanks for the reply. I'm a brand new fan, and I have to say that I appreciate what you're doing here very much. This is exactly what us home recording geeks have needed for a long time now. A good, reputable source for practical information on creating better mixes. Hats off to you, Warren, and YOU have a marvelous time recording and mixing :)
Hi +Chad Prewett Thanks very much! Yes I want to be able to show everyone what it's like in the real world! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Enough of the marvelous shit already. Although within context this piece of kit ain't half bad. I can't afford it, but I appreciate how one could nicely colour a signal going in. Muchas gracias maestro....
Hi hazybrain7 thanks for the great comment! Yes agreed it's a little expensive. There is the DMP which is around 1k or so an there is a 500 series 1073 as well which is around 800-900. However I will reviewing many more products and looking for the best value for money equipment. Thanks very much for watching and commenting. Have a marvelous time recording, many thanks Warren
Produce Like A Pro Not going to give up the 'M' so easily are ya ! No worries and thanks for looking into, and going to look into more accessible ways to colour a signal on the way in... I'd say it's a rather marvelous and deeply appreciated gift to us less well endowed.. It was hard to say that ! Thanks so much for your superb tutorials..
Hi hazybrain7 I fully understand, it's taken years for me to build a large amount of equipment. However most of what we do can now be achieved with one good quality mic pre, a 2 input interface and a good quality mic. Have a marvelous time recording, many thanks Warren
Produce Like A Pro You know, I understand and know already that that is true. Far beyond that I know that the music and the performance far outweighs any of these trivialities. I'm really just playing devils advocate with a side dish of jealously at having a nicely recorded wav file to work with.. Most likely this is the wrong thread to ask a question or desire for a future tutorial, but one thing that has eluded me is when to use use limiters pre master buss without adding to accumulated digital distortion in the mix.. I'm guessing it's a case of only when leveling is absolutely needed and to apply sparingly .. Wrong thread perhaps but an important question never the less.... Keep being Marvelous !
Hi hazybrain7 thanks for the great question! I use limiting at times in my mix, however I do find parallel compression achieves what I want far easier than Limiting. I tend to keep limiting to the end of the process, as you pointed out too much of it earlier on can bring a lot of digital distortion in. Have a marvelous time recording, many thanks Warren
Produce Like A Pro G'day Warren, no worries mate!... Would you recommend a bit of kit like the BAE 1073 or DMP for myself?... I'm looking to set-up my studio to do remote session work for artists and producers?... I'm a Bass Player / writer & want to be able to send awesome bass tracks & lines to my clients! As a awesome producer is there anything else of the top of your head you might think is essential for the sort of think I'm looking to do?.... Thanks again, Grant... facebook.com/grantrobertdavies
Hi Grant Davies thanks for the great question! Yes one great mic pre is almost all we need these days to make a great recording! Do you record an Amp and a DI when recording Bass for your clients? Have a marvelous time recording, many thanks Warren
Hi Warren, Cool thanks mate for getting back to me! Awesome, well that will be the next bit of kit on my list!!! I currently just use my MXR bass D.I before my desk/interface & yeah depending on what the track/song calls for I usually split my signal & mic up my bass cab with a old Samson Condenser :) But learning new things and better techniques every session! Thanks again & chat soon, Grant
Hi Grant Davies that sounds great! When using two sources on the Bass I like to use one source for the bottom end and the other for the mids and top. Have a marvelous time recording, many thanks Warren
Hi +gel1912 The verdict? I love the BAE 1073, ever since they introduced the 1073 rebuilds in 2000 then started making exact clones after that using the original transformers I was hooked! Eventually Neve reissued them, but I've always had a soft spot for the extra detail BAE put in. If you can try one out and see what you think. Let me know how you get on! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Hey Warren! I enjoyed VERY MUCH this video. Very useful! Thank you! Quick question: I've been looking into purchasing a PAIR of those BAE 1073 EQ/PRE's, but I can't seem to find any modified or equipped with the Jensen Transformers. Where do you suggest I look? Thanks again! Cheers
Hi +david diaz Great question! 1073's have Carnhill/St Ives Transformers, that's a huge part of their sound! Jensen's are found in 312's etc. Thanks very much I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Yeah. I know. Maybe I misunderstood but it sounded like the 1073 you show on this video was modified to have a jensen transformer.. Am I wrong? I was wondering how to get my hands on a modified pair. (?) You are so kind! Thanks Warren.
Hi +david diaz Ah I see! Yes the 1073 that has the 'Bootsy' mod has a Jensen transformer on the instrument/line input! I believe you can ask for it to have the Bootsy Mod added, I know it's standard on the 1073DMP. I hope that helps! Thanks very much I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
FYI.. and for everyone that may benefit from my research.. I've contacte BAE directly and they responded swiftly stating the "bootsy mod" can be installed at the factory before shipping, if requested prior hand. There you go!! This people are super helpful .. That's HOW to get a 1073 with the bootsy mod just like the one Warren shows and reviews on this video
Mics pres are generally one of the few things that plugins can't really emulate, considering to record the sound in the first place, you had to use a mic pre.
