Kenny today I learned something knew! It would be awesome if you create a mini-series about "Reaper guitar recordings - best practices". There are a lot of videos about recording guitars, but they lack the depth of your expertise. Possible topics: - double takes, quad takes - sequential or parallel effect - organization (folders or sends) - saving CPU Maybe just watch these RU-vid videos (especially for heavy metal and hard to rock) then improve in them!

well, er, reaper is simple, and it's complex. focus on the simple for now, and ignore all those dozens of extra menu items you might ignore. then move on to actions, but use that search bar and bind those actions to your favorite keyboard links. reaper is great, and it is inherently simple, it just has lots of options, which are best ignored at the beginning. it's also super fast, stable. ableton takes 15 seconds for me to load, reaper loads instantly. it also never crashes, except for the rare vst. ableton is great, though. get a copy of it, if you can, efven the free version bundled with a product, thought the 99 dollar version is better. session view is a game changer for auditioning song ideas and song structures. the single window interface is just slightly superior to reaper's. for 60 bucks you can't go wrong with reaper, it's soooo customizable

Thanks kenny, i like the way you teach us. I use fl studio from 2015, and start use Reaper for recording instead using FL, a couple month ago because of your videos. Your videos easy to understand. Last time i tried to send my guitar record track to another channel to split up, so i get a double track guitar even its same phase. But the cpu overload and lag many times 😂 Now i know how to duplicate same direct track with different fx😊

I've been using the Strymon Big Sky HW with speaker simulate and then post processing as needed with various amp sims in my Reaper DAW, seems to work well most of the time - but sometimes only an amp has the secret sauce (at least for now). REALLY looking forward to Strymon coming out with a more sophisticated Amp sim than the Iridium, maybe with larger Big Sky enclosure - the Iridium has many good settings but I do think there is still room for realism improvement.

Absolutely Brilliant....as usual with Kenny. What a star. I've been struggling with exactly this CPU problem, now I have a way out. Only problem I have is my old brain struggles to remember all the great things Kenny explains to me. Not a bad problem to have though. One bit of feedback for Cockos - wherever possible or relevant, try and make something in Preferences a thing that can be changed per item/track and not globally. Reason being is people (especially forgetful ones like me) will change something in preferences and then forget they had done so, or how they did it, or where to get back to to set it back to the original. And then they have a global problem/mystery. On the other hand, in trying to remember what they might have changed, they are more likely to remember that they did something to settings in a track or item to achieve something they wanted to do. Reapers amazing customisability has this arguably negative aspect and so it is really important to keep working on the ergonomics/menu layouts to make it as intuitive as possible for users to find and customise things. But I would not for one minute want Reaper to give up its power for simplicity, that would be a backwards move!

@mikeonb4c
@mikeonb4c 2 года назад
@@guitarplayer1434 Yes. Kenny taught me how to freeze some while back ha ha, and that's what I have been doing....until now. But this is a different presentation and a very interesting concept that might work better for me than just freezing. In truth mind you, and as musicians (more or less) had to do back in the 1970s when I was in bands, you should be capable of making decisions on guitar sound wanted and then rendering those sounds into the mix while recording (after all, we want them for creative/playing inspiration while doing a take so....). But control freaks that we are, the ability to alter things in post by keeping DI source and being able to play around with...is very handy.

Another great vid, question: what is the processing difference between taking the effects offline vs. disabling the track fx (unchecking boxes or the power button on track fx icon)? I typically just turn effects "off" rather than taking them offline, and I'm wondering if that means I'm doing something wrong. Or at least, something inefficient. Thanks!

@mod3l

You could probably just create a dryL+wetR with routing in the fx themselves, so that they're only on ch2 and bypass the ch1 and record track stereo output. I didn't test this to confirm, it's just an idea, but this way skips most of these steps and just prints the file.
@seanwalsh999
@seanwalsh999 2 года назад
Mind is blown, that is a lot of steps, but not to bad if you are using Reaper at least three times a week. I suppose I could split my guitar signal going into my DAW by by feeding my interface, guitar on channel one and two so I would have one dry and the other wet. I never knew that I could reduce CPU by putting the effects ahead of the input instead of on the track, where do you learn this stuff?
@perrypelican9476
@perrypelican9476 2 года назад
An Important thing is to learn how MIDI works so you understand it. Most people are happy when things just work and when they make a change and problems happen, they can't figure out why and either give up or pay someone to help.. If you know how midi works then you can quite often see the cause of the problem. An example is that I have a 4 port powered midi thru box.the midi in port is connected to my computer and each of the 4 outs is connected to a different hardware synth. Most people don't realize that midi requires some power.Before having the powered box, I used to get intermittent issues, especially when sending midi to multiple synths at the same time. I bet you don't know anyone who has a powered midi thru box. Since I know how midi works, I figured out that it would probably solve my problem, and it did. Another thing is that many people daisy chain their midi devices Instead of using a midi thru box, which is a hub for midi. The huge benefit is that if one target device is defective, the others will not be effected. With daisy chaining, if a device doesn't handle the midi correctly, it screws up the midi going to all the devices. After it in the chain. Sorry for such a long story but I felt like giving you a real good example of the value of understanding how midi works and what it requires.to work best for a particular requirement. Remember this piece of advice: if you want to send midi to multiple places from one port on your computer, the best device to use is a midi thru box and if it is powered, even better. Have fun.

Kenny, you’re by far the best but this threw me off a bit. Question: would recording a single pass (take) on to two separate tracks, one with printed effects and the other dry work ?
