So he wasn't prepared for just how powerful she actually is, especially since that was the first time she'd ever cast a spell. As a loose example, a MOAB carries just under 19,000 pounds of explosives. Anyone would understand that means it's powerful. But would they understand how powerful if they've never seen it?

Theory and practice are 2 different things. Experiencing something firsthand, even if you were prepared, can be extremely shocking. For exemple, you know death is a fact of life but if you see someone dying in front of you, especially someone you love, you will feel it deeply for the first time. Here he knew she was strong, but seeing the huge blast, sensing the heat and hearing the sound of the spell, not to mention factoring in the context of it being the first time she ever used magic, it’s not surprising he was shocked.
