RED BULL ISN'T 'COOKED'! Opinions on Jonathan Wheatley Leaving Red Bull for Audi

Man partakes in a bit of career advancement, but all anyone seems to hook on to is that Horner is killing the team. Even if that is going on, and tensions are definitely there, the guy just wants his dream job!
Now, I'm usually right about this sort of stuff, but watch as this is one of the rare times I'm compeltely wrong and Red Bull finish 5th next year...
Anyway, Audi has a new Team Principal as it starts to act semi-serious about their F1 entry. They couldn't get Sainz but they've got in a man with a lot of experience who might be able to get the job done. Let's have a look at what this all means...
Enjoy! And remember to like and subscribe for more!

I mean Wheatley leaving Red Bull is basically the same as when vowels left Merc, they're interested in a team principal role but there's literally no room for promotion within, same with when Adrian Newey left Williams, he wanted the role Patrick head was in except for the fact Head co-founded and Co-owned the team only way to get what you want in terms of job position is get on job listings and shop around with another team
@tjroelsma

True, but look how Mercedes turned out after so many people left. Red Bull can try to brush it off as a small matter, but Newey, Wheatley and others leaving is NOT a good thing. And that smug new guy has seen his triumphant "Newey had almost nothing to to with the RB20" backfire in the worst possible way now the updates don't seem to work at all. Mercedes pooh-pooh-ed all the people leaving as well and then were stuck with that disastrous zero-pod concept, that cost them two whole seasons. Now I'm not saying that Red Bull WILL fall as deep, but the possibility certainly seems to be real.

I was fully expecting Red Bull to have a long dominant period similar to Ferrari in the early 2000s or Mercedes in the mid-to-late 2010s. Them imploding like this just makes the Hamilton-Mercedes years look that much more impressive (and therefore it pleases the Toto-nator). However I don't think we'll have competitive seasons like 2021 or 2012 again because (so far) it seems like every time a team has a chance of beating the front runner they somehow end up pooping the bed (Ferrari in 2017, 2018, 2022 and McLaren in the current 2024 season). Still, I'd rather have a season like the current one over last year's season when I finally understood how everyone that wasn't a McLaren fan in 1988 felt watching Senna and Prost lap the entire grid.
@clansome
@clansome 2 месяца назад
I remember those days so well. Everyone talks about dominant cars these days forgetting that in the 70's, 80's & 90's it was almost like F1 & F2 racing at the same time. If you were in a good car then the world was your oyster, and you just hoped the team hadn't got a duff engine powering it, reliability as well as speed were the requirements, and THAT attracted the good drivers.

_"I really don't know"_ is the most honest assessment I've heard with regards to the situation at Red Bull. I've pretty much given up trying to figure it out, there's been so many rumours but so little facts. What I don't see is their on-track performance dropping much, at least with Verstappen. He's still way out in front of the WDC and while McLaren have definitely closed the gap if it wasn't for the engine penalty at Spa Max would've waltzed off into the distance.

@@AidanMillward Paddy Lowe too. He was considered by outsiders to be an essential part of Merc's success. (Before that he was part of the McLaren-Mercedes years, and head of electronics at Williams in the years which led up to the FW14B & 15C. Three championship doubles at Williams, 3 drivers & a constructors at McLaren and now 3 doubles in a row with Mercedes.) One of the finest CVs in the paddock, how could Merc survive without him? Toto was slated for letting him go. Turned out Merc kept winning championship doubles quite happily without him. And Paddy Lowe's return to Williams ended after (under his leadership as Chief Technical Officer) they missed most of pre-season testing because the car wasn't ready.

You and LawVS have the most cool-headed views I've seen on this subject. My one question is does he not have an assistant or two? Surely someone as important as him would have someone there just in case he took ill over a race weekend? Given the size of the company, it would be extremely surprising if the job can't be taken over by someone else in the team. It may be that they'll need two people; one to do the organisation, another to know the rules and regulations as well as him, and there must be someone (or a few "someones") there with the right mindset for the job. Unlike when Charlie Whiting was shadowed for a while until the FIA were left wondering how he did six people's jobs at the same time, but did nothing about it because he didn't intend to retire... They'll need the best people in place before he leaves, but I can't imagine that he'd refuse to help them settle in before he leaves at the end of the season. He's always struck me as being a very cool customer.

You talking about the repair job in Hungary 2020 is a good shout, I coincidentally found myself rewatching that "Inside Story" video yesterday and admired how Wheatley oversaw the entire operation. While Red Bull does have some big shoes to fill, them making the announcement first implies they've been preparing for it so the impact is as minimised as possible. Likewise as you've said, Audi can benefit from someone of that composure and skillset making sure that they hit the ground running. It's also an amazing opportunity for Wheatley to move on to new challenges, similar to how Vowles went to Williams as their principal. RB may not be cooked immediately but I can see things being uncomfortable there for a little bit longer.

Red Bull announced Newey's departure on May 1, which I heard he didn't take very well for good reason. In Wheatley's case, they announced his departure without coordinating with Audi. Sounds like it's just a vindictive environment if you ask me.

Obviously your thoughts are as reasonable and level-headed as ever, but I have to disagree that a minor bump in the road is the realistic worst case scenario for Red Bull Racing as they seek successors for Wheatley and Newey. There are countless examples of organisations failing to find adequate replacements for senior figures and suffering for it, both in F1 and outside of it - who is to say that Red Bull are above such problems? I don't think the fact that Wheatley's departure is being used to fuel a narrative about the politics inside the team can be reason enough to dismiss the challenge of replacing some phenomenally successful figures.

I definately wouldn't say this latest departure has Red Bull "Cooked". If anything as hard to believe as it is, I think that Cost cap rule affecting championship finishes might actually have finally kicked in and all the off track controversy surrounding them just so happens to neatly paint that picture (Although I still say having said drama in the back after so many years where at most, the issue was solely the drivers isn't exactly ideal either) . Combined with Mclaren finally figuring out how to make a fast car again (and now needing to relearn what its like to compete for wins again) and Mercedes finally actually sorting out their problems (For real this time), its only added to that picture. That said of course, its worth remembering that Max isn't not exactly thrilled with all the showy nonsense with F1 and has said that he doesn't want to say in the sport that long so he's likely already looking at another category (Probably Sports cars since I notice THATS what he tends to sim race very often).

This Jonathan Wheatley thing is strange... Wheatley has expressed wanting to be a team principal for a while, yet when it was announced that Franz Tost was leaving Alpha Rosso Cashapp Thingy, it was Ferrari’s then Sporting Director Laurent Mekies that got the job. You’d think knowing Wheatley wanted to step up to team boss they’d have offered it to him? With the benefit of keeping him in house incase Horner didn’t want to be at full fat Red Bull anymore at some point in the future. I think this might have been brewing for a while and he’s finally got his chance when Audi came calling. Red Bulls apparent demise being convenient timing.

While I agree that Jonathan didn't leave because RB is cooked or something, it is however are a big problem that another one of their biggest names leaves so soon after. Especially given the whole RB drama off track soap opera. It is a lot of turbelence for Red Bull right now - perhaps even too much. Usually you want a stable core then, and for multiple reasons it is very difficult for Red Bull to keep that core; even Max Verstappen hasn't said on god that he will be driving for Red Bull in 2025.
@nickshaw3619
@nickshaw3619 2 месяца назад
Let's say the Wheatley is leaving ONLY because he was offered an opportunity he has been looking for for some time. I will accept the premise that his decision to depart RB was solely about career advancement, for the sake of argument. RB is still losing fifteen years of institutional knowledge, and decades of experience in one stroke, at a time when they're ALSO losing similar institutional knowledge and F1 experience in other vital areas. That's not a situation that gets smoothed over with a couple of internal promotions. People like Wheatley have all kinds of knowledge that's literally impossible to impart through a condensed training program, they would need to find a way to download his brain. This is why Garden Leave exists. Audi isn't supposed to benefit from what Wheatley can carry out in his head (they will anyway), and RB isn't supposed to be able to call him up because he's the only guy who knows how to do... whatever. The claims that RB is "cooked" aren't necessary about RB having shot themselves in the foot, just the recognition that they do appear to be bleeding from a wound to the leg area. How well they absorb those losses will be the test as to whether they're "cooked" or not, but their bacon is definitely in the fire at the moment.

Like every sport things come to an end. Schumacher/Brawn/Todt era at Ferrari, Hamilton/Wolfe/Lowe/Costa era at Mercedes, class of 92/Ferguson era at United, Bradey /Patroits era etc. People come and go, sometimes over time, sometimes all in one go. F1 is a team sport, while individuals can be key for a teams success, if other areas dont perform it means nothing. Remember Red Bull had a barron spell because the engine really held them back and Newey was only part time. Merc and McLaren dont have [insert name here] and have won championsips or are currently looking better than Red Bull and arent the same as their last periods of success. Aston Martin have taken a lot of Merc and Red Bull personel and have nothing to ahow for it. Loke Ferrari, you can have all the pieces but inless there is stability and they are put together correctly it counts for nothing. Its like football, just because Beckham left United and they still had success doesnt mean he wasnt important to the team or his absence has no impact. It just means the team successfully adjust to his absence.

Did you have a Lexus (or Toyota Mark II, Crown or Century)? That should be more trouble-free than any of those, yet the Toyota F1 team was mediocre. In any case I don't think German, Italian or British prestige cars target that level of durability as (1) they only benchmark each other, (2) it's not what they sell on, so why increase costs for no upside, (3) it's almost advantageous that 5+ year old cars become troublesome so that the customer comes back to upgrade to a lease on a new one, (4) the luxury factor is only in the newness of the car, maybe they don't want a 15 year old CLS500 to still be a symbol of luxury.

RB not cooked, really, until either Marko or Horner have been offed there is a huge political divide. Simple solution put Marko in charge of the 2nd team, let's see who does best!

@@TeamRedWolf11 I think people forget that Audi has only been good in stuff where there’s been no competition. As soon as everyone latched on to 4wd in rally the Quattro went backwards. LMP1 they barely had anyone else, much like Toyota did for a few years.

@@AidanMillward that's a valid point as well hey haven't had consistently good competition only one off challenges for the most part regardless at least they have people that know what they are doing and Audi seems to be taking a Merc approach now but time will tell if red bull handles this well or not and if Audi proves to be the next Merc or the next Toyota

Less than 10 seconds after the intro and we've gone Weezer. Love it It's looking to me like Audi's got a crack team going. I just hope the money spaffing continues to the cars and drivers who will get the most out of said cars. It'd be nice if every team on the grid scored points

You're all lying to yourself and delusional if you believe this wont have an impact on RBR and kill their dominance. It's already begun.... leaving an established and team that has dominated the last 3 years to become a team principle of a team without a proven engine isn't a promotion, it's a get me the F out of here move. The worst kind of liars are the ones who lie to themselves.

Nah, he was always looking to become team principal for awhile so it’s not really surprising. I won’t be surprised if Red Bull already knew this before hand

Yeah, everyone is making huge pronouncements about Red Bull with no real info to base it on, but there's not a lot to really talk about. Personnel come and go, and that to a thing in any business or community. Yes, about a year ago, I said Lewis was going to Ferrari in '25 and maybe winning his 8th championship by '26. But, I didn't have anything to say say it was going to happen, it was just a hunch. I didn't make a video proclaiming that it was going to happen. Whatever... I guess clickbait sells...

I think this levelheaded analysis is not bad at all. @lewysmedford5420 has also made a valuable contribution. At best/worst (strike as you like), it might even be the other way around: RedBull is facing the inevitable slide to the back, because the rules are made in a way to get as much of a level playing field (about which one can argue, but these are the rules and I can see why they are what they are), so people are taking calls when phones start ringing. Or are up for new horizons after fifteen years in 'the same' building. And I think that's good. No matter how I like waving my orange flag about, a) having four different champions in the last 14 years is too little and b) in that time we had three, perhaps four, championships that were both close and between drivers from different teams (so I'm not including Rosberg's title as 'close'). That's no good.

Not this year. Red Bull and Verstappen will still win it all this year. They just won’t clinch. NEXT year, they should be worried about McLaren and Ferrari at the very least. MAYBE Mercedes.

The problem is that there is a new generation of fans which have taken hold during the last 4 years which has make the sport into a global US hedge fund gen z competition! F1 is completely gone, and yes Bernie was the end of the past! I can’t stand the hype every week, it’s like a football transfer market! It’s completely gone and then you have a zippo emissions deadline which will kill the sport

I must bring this up, what is your obsession with pronouncing things wrong? The former McLaren man is pronounced "Side-l" not "Seed-l", as you'd know if you'd ever heard anyone in the sport say it. Why do you insist on saying things wrong?
