#nevergotadinner #redbuttonsroast #deanmartincelebrityroast
Red Buttons (1919 - 2006) was an American actor and comedian. He won an Oscar and a Golden Globe for his supporting role in the 1957 film Sayonara. He was nominated for awards for his acting work in films such as They Shoot Horses, Don't They?, Harlow, and Pete's Dragon. Buttons played the lead role of Private John Steele in the 1962 international ensemble cast film The Longest Day.
#muhammadaliroast #franksinatraroast #georgeburnsroast
The Dean Martin Celebrity Roast is a series of television specials hosted by entertainer Dean Martin and airing from 1974 to 1984. For a series of 54 specials and shows, Martin and his friends would "roast" a celebrity. The roasts were patterned after the roasts held at the New York Friars' Club.

I was helping a photographer friend at the Friars Club during the early 2000's when they were honoring Phyllis Diller and saw Red Buttons perform his 'Never Had a Dinner' routine live. He was quite hilarious with his act. In addition to seeing Mr. Buttons, their were other Hollywood alumni such as Milton Berle (just before his death), Sid Caesar, Carl Reiner, Rob Reiner, Tony Martin and the lovely Cyd Charisse to name but a few. A moment in my life I will never forget.

I was born in 1963. Why does that matter? I'll tell you why. I was able to see ALL of the greats, most of them in their prime. That's just Movies, TV and Comedians. From 1968 to 1978 there was the greatest output of music, ever. We didn't need to hear a bunch of F bombs and other curse words in order to have a good laugh. We used to look forward to these Roasts when they aired on TV. Even if some of our favorites were getting a little long in the tooth like Jimmy Stewart, George Burns, Uncle Miltie; at least we had a chance to see them in this environment. Laughing and having a great time. The two Roasters who mostly broke up Dean Martin were Foster Brooks and Red Buttons. This is Treasure. Gold. You'll never see this again. Was it better back then? Maybe not, but then that is my only reference. I hope young people can get into these old clips. Thank God for RU-vid and the internet.
