Schumacher leads the championship and is back on home turf at the Nürburgring. Can we turn the tide and keep the fight alive?

This is round fifteen of my second attempt playing through the Psygnosis and Bizarre Creations classic - Formula 1 97 for the Sony PlayStation.
Despite owning a copy of this game for over 20 years, I have never won the World Championship. So after a failed attempt with Olivier Panis, I'm re-teaming with Jean Alesi to try and make it happen.
I'd love to hear your memories of playing this game! Did you have any close championship battles? Who did you play as?

Definitely a racing incident with Irvine, to be honest he did it enough throughout his career

I'm trying so hard not to continuously bash Eddie Irvine, both verbally and physically, but you are right and it's about time he got one back. 😂

Nice to see you back 🎉. Well 😂 when I feel sad I will review your battle with Mika Salo. He's your Bernoldi. Nice recovery . No no penaltys for Irvine accident. He missed gear or something 🤫
@TheOutsideLine
@TheOutsideLine 5 месяцев назад
Not seen much of Salo all season and here he makes a lasting impression. 😅 I think that's a solid ruling on the Irvine incident and I have no reason to dispute it. 😁

Thanks! It could've gone so much better though. 😅

This second comment is actually intentional, glad to help the engagement. Anyway, I wonder ... will future "Justice for '97 edition" have extra elements added in? As in: Tyre wear, fuel consumption. Not damage because this AI is deranged and race would be over before anyone got to turn 1. Maybe "Long" 20 lap races so that strategy plays a part. And, once again, I shall suggest 0% rear downforce. I actually have not properly tested it on wet weather, and it scares me to do so but I shall do it FOR SCIENCE!!, but from some limited testing the top speed and rotation advantage on the dry is really, REALLY nice. Maybe too much rotation (which is why I must do wet weather testing. In Monaco and Hungary for good measure), but it might well save this championship. That and maybe a totally not deliberate, completely accidental punt that sends MSC to the back of the grid on lap 1 ... F-Flavio, stop, STOP!
@TheOutsideLine
@TheOutsideLine 5 месяцев назад
Appreciate the deliberate double-engagement 😂 Yeah, that is definitely a consideration going forward so I can revisit the game in different ways. Longer races also bring variable weather back into the mix too. Let me know how your experiments go! 0% rear downforce on Suzuka as a concept scares me ngl 😅 The temptation is real, but I will try to avoid doing a 97 Schumacher on Schumacher.

Ignore the Irvine incident. (Ferrari motto btw). Great result considering the entire field brake checked you at some point
@TheOutsideLine

Not heard that Ferrari motto before but it made me chuckle 😂 Thanks - shame I couldn't dodge them better as I reckon a win was possible, but at least we're still in it!

I don't think there should be any repercussions since F1 bosses want there to be a dramatic last race shootout - Alesi, being a huge Ferrari man would apologise profusely and talk to Eddie saying that he didn't see him until breaking into the corner.
@TheOutsideLine
@TheOutsideLine 5 месяцев назад
I think that's very sound logic. If anything bosses should find a way to penalise Schumacher for the crash so it makes it a closer fight. 😅 That is true, Alesi would never intentionally hurt Ferrari. 💘

Ah, the European Grand Prix. I shall call it that, as the Luxembourg GP sounds goofy. Jerez is just .... Jerez. Flavio should really work some of his option 13 magic for better race starts for Alesi. They are desperately needed. And if not possible ... I guess there must be a way to launch the car on this game. On the Irvine incident: racing incident due to terrible visibility and track conditions. On the Berger incident: Flavio is going to hang him.

It is a silly name, but probably not the worst they've ever had! I've never worked out how to get a good start in this game, and it's a million times worse in the rain. 😥 I think both of those assessments are fair and accurate.
@Aubrey_2_Hotty
@Aubrey_2_Hotty 5 месяцев назад
I'm gonna blame it in the rain 🌧 You got some undeserved ones, that makes up for it. If you had been given the Irvine one, you would've been disqualified completely which I think would've been unfair considering you had gotten back to them after falling to 16th. Decent result, staying alive but.. basically almost settled here. Any mistakes and Schumacher clinches, might clinch it anyway in Suzuka! Head down, Jean.

I think the stewards were overwhelmed by the rain. Clearly distracted by other incidents. I'm happy to take my warnings and run. 👀 Yeah, we are right up against it now. 18 points with 30 remaining. Think the mountain might be slightly to high to climb. But not over yet. 👊🏼

Hmm, on first inspection the Irvine incident looked to me like a stonewall penalty but when I think about it, given the shortcomings of the F1 97 AI, there's a strong argument that it's analogous to the Schumacher-Coulthard incident at Spa 1998 when Coulthard slowed unexpectedly and due to the conditions it caught Schumacher out and he hit him.
@TheOutsideLine
@TheOutsideLine 5 месяцев назад
That's a solid and well-reasoned argument, and with that in mind, I think racing incident is the only fair outcome. 😏
@PayasYouListen

I'm not really sure that the Irvine incident was on you. If it had been dry, yes. But in those conditions, and Irvine slowing much more than you'd expect at the corner, I'm calling it a racing incident.
@TheOutsideLine
@TheOutsideLine 5 месяцев назад
This is the sort of logic I can get behind. 🙏🏼
@iansimpson27
@iansimpson27 5 месяцев назад
Also that "He's hit Berger!" incident at 14:01 reminds me a lot of the Alesi-Schumacher incident at Australia 1995, when Murray Walker certainly didn't exclaim, "He's hit Alesi!". There was a recent episode on the Bring Back V10s podcast where they compared Alesi's move to the F1 95 AI where they act as if you're not there. Seems that F1 97 hadn't quite corrected that yet.
@TheOutsideLine
@TheOutsideLine 5 месяцев назад
Now you mention it I know what you mean, it is quite a similar contact to that incident. I love the Bring Back V10s podcast (unsurprisingly) but not heard that one. I stupidly don't listen to them in order and jump about between series a lot. But quite right, the AI do still have moments of tunnel vision.
@iansimpson27
@iansimpson27 5 месяцев назад
@@TheOutsideLine I'm often guilty of the same thing - since I started following Bring Back V10s closely in series 7 I've been listening to the subsequent ones mostly in order, but I jump between the earlier series a lot. I started with the Nurburgring & Canada 1995 ones and branched out from there.
@TheOutsideLine
@TheOutsideLine 4 месяца назад
There's at least some order in there. I have completely lost track of which ones I have listened to and which ones I've missed. I jump about all over the place. I'll do a full run-through at some point 😅

Looked like Eddie braked early. I’m gonna say 100% his fault.

And I have no reason to argue with that sound logic. 🙏🏼

Man your pace in the first lap... I thought you were going to win. It's annoying Eddie's engine died going into the chicane, we all know Eddie, he would not care less to pull to the side and let anybody pass safely. Berger... his mind apparently elsewhere. Racing incidents this time.
@TheOutsideLine
@TheOutsideLine 5 месяцев назад
If I could've kept it clean and been a bit smarter/not been driven into by Salo, then I reckon a win was still possible for sure. You know what it's funny you mention it but Eddie's engine did make a very strange noise before he stopped so that was definitely more on him, 100% 😅 As for Berger... good job he's retiring at the end of the season!
