I was born and raised in NYC and loved to get this on my hot dog off the hot dog and Pretzel cart. I moved out of NYC years ago, and missed having this on my hot dog. I can’t wait to try your recipe!
My husband was born and raised in Brooklyn New York and this is by far the best I've been trying to duplicate and believe me hes an red onion sauce expert well done
I’ve been using this recipe on my hotdog cart and my customers love it! I live in Canada and in my neck of the woods no one had ever heard of red onion sauce. I serve a lot of the sauce, I quadruple the recipe when I make it as I go through so much of it. Thanks for the tutorial and the recipe.
Thank you for this. It's actually simmering right now. I've been trying to try the Sabretts sauce for years. The last time I was in New York I didn't get a chance to try it. The other day I bought a jar at the store (they never have it) and the next day my wife knocked it out of the fridge and it busted all over the floor before I could even open it. When I went back to the store they were out. Today I went to another store and they were out too. I was starting to think the universe was conspiring against me to try this sauce! I'm so happy I found your recipe!
UPDATE: I thought this recipe was really really good -SO I took a jar of it and bough 1 dozen Weiner Dogs and gave them to some of my friends at our local Slot car track here in Ca. Most of them never heard of it, and 2 of them had it in NY, well EVERYONE said it was SO GOOD and they would like to have some... I thought I was being biased but I guess not, THANK YOU Noreen it is one the best recipes I have so far..5 STARS!!!
I just wanted to take a minute to thank you for being one of the people on here that has a place to go and get the whole recipe. I just don't understand why someone has a cooking channel and no place to get the whole printable recipe. And also I just love your channel! Thanks so much. And you and Rick are so real and down to earth people. (real Funny) love this.
I try to keep up. My website is currently in need of some upkeep and I have a few recipes that I have not had a chance to get up on there, but I will soon. This one, I knew you would want so I just threw a PDF up for everyone to print out. I am working on a page for this recipe as we speak. Thanks for letting me know that the website is helpful and yes, I agree with you, why on earth would you have a channel with recipes if you are not going to share them? People want it in written form. So I appreciate the feed back! Thanks for the comment!
I just made this. The only thing I changed, was to coarsely chop the onions. I just prefer that look. I must say, it was sooo delicious! Thanks so much for this recipe. I will be using this alot!
It's awesome, Tyvm cried first time made it, my grandpa took me to Yankee stadium when growing up, always got it at cart, we lived in RI lol. But brought memories of Mario hot dog cart.
As a born and bred New Yorker, I thank you for this recipe. I grew up eating hot dogs with the red onion sauce. My only problem is the consistency of the onions. They were not cooked down as much as yours but that’s the consistency of the jarred sauce. I would slice my onions just a little thicker and cook them a little less, that’s what I grew up with. I also would add a little cinnamon. Again, I thank you for this recipe. I’ve been looking a long time because I no longer live in NYC but I can get everything but the onion sauce. Now I have that! Plus I am very happy you did not put ketchup in the sauce like a lot of people. A true New Yorker would never put ketchup anywhere near their hotdog! 😁
@@BH-sn7ws not true! 😅 I would get an everything dog. Ketchup, mustard, kraut, onions, and relish. It was the way my dad got his. I miss NYC and my dad.
awesome! I've moved from NJ to GA over 20yr ago and I couldn't find this anywhere and I had no idea how it was up until now. I definitely have to make this. thank you so much.
Oh, good! So glad I ran across this. The only versions of this or sweet pepper relish I can find in the stores are loaded with HFC and chemicals. Have to say, when I watch you cook on the coil electric range (which I hate because I can't control the heat like I want), I am reminded of Julia Child. She did everything on a regular electric coil cooktop, never burned a thing, and created amazing things. You do the same.
Thank you very much for sharing this recipe. I can not wait to make this recipe. I love any kind of onions, and leeks..This can go over a hamburger steak as well. I can find many ways to use this dish..
Freeze it that what i did worked out great. I found this video back in 2017. I am happy that i saved this video to watch later because this recipe is easy and taste great. TY Noreen
Hello just found this and very excited to try it out. As a born-and-bred New Yorker myself now living in Nevada I was very excited to find this. Also as a trained chef your combination for this recipe so far seems to be the only one that makes sense to me to come as close as possible to the original. And I want to say thank you for your effort for putting this together. Just please ignore the rest of those naysayers that I saw in other posts they're clueless anyway. Seems to me they need something to cling to their hotdog ROFL. It's always a good thing to know how to make something yourself. I look forward to seeing your other videos.
IM FROM BROOKLYN NEW YORK AND NOW LIVING IN SOUTH CAROLINA. YOU HAVE JUST MADE ME OFFICIALLY HOMESICK. I MISS THE DIRTY MAN STANDS. THATS WHAT WE NICKNAME THE HOT DOG STANDS /CARTS. THE BEST HOT DOGS AND OF COURSE A NATHANS HOT DOG FROM CONEY ISLAND.
On cinnamon in savory foods: Most cinnamon in America sold on shelves is Saigon cinnamon, which has a flavor better suited for sweet dishes. Ceylon cinnamon is better suited for savory dishes, I recommend checking to see if your grocery store sells it and maybe trying it to see if you like it any better. It's what sold in the Latin section of my local supermarket.
I love how you and Rick have fun while cooking the food you make. Keep the twelve year old coming out! More people need their twelve year old selves to come out and play! I love hot dogs but not onions so while this looks good for the people who love it I would leave mine plain. Try hot dogs with bar-be-que sauce on them, that is good.
Picture it... 3am and everyone is in bed... and I'm determined to find this recipe. THEN... "It's gonna just kinda cling to your hot dog". --- Spit take. LOL. I was choking and laughing so loud I woke the entire house. Thank you Noreen for the AWESOME recipe and great laughs. You're the best.
Thanks so much for the recipe. I have tried it out and my kitchen was smiling yummy....it's good for everything even pilau. God bless you and the family.
OMG, just made it and its soooooo good. I added a little more tomato paste, 6 oz for my taste. This is the perfect recipe, again thank you for posting.
I make this all the time, I grew up in Brooklyn and moved to Texas… I went to James Coney Island Hotdogs in Tx thinking it would be the same hotdogs in Brooklyn, n it was disappointing. I spoke with management n told them this is a bad representation of the Coney Island Hotdogs… To make a long story short, I had to learn how to make the red onions sauce. There’s nothing like a Brooklyn NY Hotdog red onion sauce. Thanks for sharing n ur video was hilarious with the comment u left in…
This I tasted in California, somewhere in the absolute maze that is downtown LA. Found at this fast food/diner place, I asked the lady about em and she said she tried them once somewhere, loved it. She then decided to go all the way down to New York to find someone to teach her how to make it. and then she came back and opened up a hot dog joint. now these are one of those hole in the wall, out of the way places. Which really, that's where you find the best stuff anyway. I never ever forgot it mostly cuz I never had it before and she wouldn't tell to make it myself I mean I I'd have still to come back to eat there I've never made a food friend so quickly before, but alas! I would have, granted it wasn't me who took myself there, I was taken there by someone I knew and now I have no idea where she are so I had to learn to make it myself. Those orange onions have haunted my memory and taste buds for literal years! As proof to myself if it's awesomeness I come to this conclusion: I honestly think this stuff is so good, I could eat it with a spoon...and I don't like onions like that.
I have a cutter just like that!! Lol my sister gave it to me about 30 years ago I have no idea we’re she got it from but it’s better than thing you can find now a days.
My mouth is watering 😋 yesterday for lunch I had two Coney island hot dogs from Nick's Coney island hot dogs in Fall River Massachusetts simply the Best... Mmmmmm
I also have my grandma's harp slicer with the original box. Still sharp as a razor after all these years. My husband calls it the death slicer., lol. The relish looked yummy, will give it a go.
Turned out great Noreen. I made a 1/2 batch about 2 weeks ago. Not too long after the video was posted. I finally got around to making "rot"dogs for lunch this past Saturday and got to try it out on some dogs. I swear I have a vague memory of my mom buying a red hotdog relish like this at the base commissary when I was a kid. Don't know why she stopped other than they may have stopped carrying it. She enjoyed your relish as well.
Hi Noreen, Looks good and can only imagine how good it smelled cooking makes my mouth water thinking about it. Love cooked onion so i know this will be great on more than juts hot dogs. Thanks for sharing.I think Rick enjoys your 12 showing just as much as we do. : )
Hi, I just found your channel today. I have to say that everything I've seen so far is making my mouth water! Btw, I love it that you guys are real, and down to earth. I can't wait to make this sauce, as well as some of the other dishes I've seen here. Keep 'em coming!
Thanks for more history and information on this sauce. I never heard the term "red onion sauce." About thirty years ago, I clipped a very simple recipe for a similar thing from a magazine. It was called "street vendor hot dogs" and they were served with a simpler version of this. The flavor of yours is probably more rich and complex. The other recipe gets color from a lot of good quality paprika. I definitely want to try adding some of the things you used. But my husband absolutely loves hot dogs this way.
I love that your twelve is showing. Mine was right there with it. And after that it was like everything you said made me giggle! Thanks for a giggle on a day I really needed one. 😄
Funny! Can't wait to make this. I remember this being a staple at picnics when I was a kid. I think my father's family (coal country PA) made it from scratch. There is a canning recipe somewhere for this.
love your sense of humor, and your recipes are great and I am trying to get my daughter to make your seasonings to save money. Keep them coming please. so its hi from Western Australia
This looks super yummy.I will be making this very soon.Love all your videos.I made your dough recipe for restaurant style bread sticks but made panzaroti with it.My family flipped out for them. That dough is a treat to roll out and work with! Thanks so much for sharing all your great recipes.
