In this video, we’ll cook up a quick and easy stovetop version of the popular Hot Dog relish/sauce called the Red Onion Sauce, which many New Yorkers love.
Sabrett, a major hot dog company in New York, is famous for this onions in sauce, which with this recipe you can now make at home.
I grew up in New York and always needed this red onion relish on my hot dogs with mustard and sauerkraut. That was my favorite way to have a hot dog. It’s nothing fancy, but really tasty. You can find this at any place that sells hot dogs from popular places like Gray's Papaya and Nathan's Famous to any of the thousands of hot dog pushcarts in NYC, which serve up what many New Yorkers lovingly call "dirty water dogs".
This is an easy, simple and quick recipe for the popular onion sauce which will take your taste buds to NYC, that can be put together in any part of the world in the same time you need to cook up your hot dogs.
If you've had it before or if you make it from this recipe, let me know what you think!
INGREDIENTS LIST
Note: This will make enough sauce for about four or so hot dogs, so scale up accordingly.
1 medium to large onion
2 tablespoons of olive oil (or any cooking oil) to coat the surface of the pot
1/4 cup of ketchup
1/4 cup of vinegar (white)
Teaspoon (or tablespoon, your choice) of Garlic powder
Optional: teaspoon of cayenne pepper (the last part probably could be less or optional).

I love this on the sausage u get at a hotdog stand in NYC. I used to live there, I now live upstate near the Canadian border. Things changed when I had children in the 80's. I still miss it especially at this time of year. Christmas in the city nothing like it.

Yes!!! Christmas in New York is the best! Nothing comes close. And of course there's a lot of food in New York, that just can't be found anywhere else. Fortunately some of it is easy to recreate at home with the right ingredients, like this red onion sauce. Merry Christmas!!!

I've made this before using a similar recipe. My cook was way longer than 15 minutes. More like 40 minutes or so. So I started with a 2 lb. bag of white onions sliced about 1/4 inch. Makes about 1 qt. of onion sauce. I call it a rainy day cook. If it's raining and you got a bag of onions make up a batch of this and enjoy. I use it on brats, warmed up on burgers to.

I've experimented with longer times in the past (probably letting it simmer for over an hour) and the results seemed pretty much the same. I've also cooked up a lot as well but in the end, I have a lot left over taking over room in the fridge and I think my wife was ready to go to war with me. ;) But, yeah, this is great stuff and so easy to make. I just whip up a small batch whenever I need it, and yes, it goes great with a lot of food for sure. Thanks for your comment!

@@keneatsI hear ya on the taking up room in the fridge. I have several bottles/jars of this that and the other stuff. Condiments I buy and also make. I could use a small fridge just for these. The door shelves are not enough space.

Just made this tonight. Used about 1 2/3 t of garlic powder, maybe 1/4 t of cayenne. I think this is actually better than Sabrett, and I love theirs! Thanks for posting this, it’s great!

I do enjoy a good Chicago dog myself but here in Japan its hard to get a few of the ingredients (ok, impossible to get some of the ingredients). You'd think sport peppers, poppy seed buns, celery salt, etc. The list goes on... :(

Say guy I had a hot dog cart in Los Angeles I tried for 9 years to get that New York style red onion recipe, one day a guy came by and asked me did I have the New York style red onion recipe, I told him no I have been trying to get it for 9 years everybody lied to me and he told me that he would give it to me on one condition. So I asked him what was that condition and he said to me if I tell everyone that asked me that a New York gypsy gave me the recipe and I agreed, so he did and I made it exactly the way he told me to and every New Yorker that came by my hot dog cart and bought a hot dog because of the red onions said that my red onions were better than red onions in New York that this Gypsy guy gave me. But thank you for the onion sauce I will try it. I've never been to New York

I really don't like onions... but this is 10/10. I would eat a lot of this. I used 2 smallish vidalia onions. 1/2 c 1/2c ketchup/apple cider vinegar a bit of garlic and a bit of olive oil. I reduced it for longer than 15 minutes. its great. next time I will cut the onions smaller and maybe cut back on the vinegar or add some brown sugar because I was told it was too vinegary. I liked it though.

I have a Hotdog Cart in North Alabama. I found a similar recipe for NY Red Onion sauce. I made it and people loved it. The recipe you show here is simpler and appears to be easier to prepare. My question is about scaling it up... My current recipe calls for 4 large sweet onions. Can I assume the ketchup and vinegar would scale per large onion in your recipe?
@keneats
@keneats 5 месяцев назад
In order to cut/control costs, since you probably want to settle on a firm, cost-effective recipe for what you need (while experimenting to see what works), I suggest maybe starting a cook with 4 onions (large)-[sidenote, I often do use larger onions, though the video show something that I would consider “medium”] with 3/4 cups each of the ketchup and vinegar, tablespoon of the garlic and maybe a 1/2 cup of whatever cooking oil you want to use, but use half of that to coat the pot first and the other to cover the top of the onions after you dump them into the pot, so that you’ll have enough oil to cover the cooking process of the onions to get to that translucent stage. Then add the other stuff and see if it’s the consistency you like, sampling as you go along. If it’s not “liquid-y”, enough you can probably get away with adding like a 1/2 cup of water (or less…or more) to get to that consistency you want. Of course if the taste isn’t as you like it, just add equal parts of the ketchup and the vinegar, I think. These two ingredients are the what gives it that distinctive NYC pushcart/Sabretts flavor, I believe. But yeah, experiment a bit, but I don’t think it’ll take too long to hit that taste and consistency balance you want, while keeping costs to a minimal, IMHO. But it’ll take a bit of playing around. Fortunately, you can adjust as you go along, but remember to keep notes of what and how much you are adding. Good luck and hope to hear what you end up settling on, which could be helpful for others who might have the same situation as you and are reading this. Thanks for your comment!
