Sabrett's hot dog onion sauce is a New York City specialty, this is my clone recipe. You can get these dogs at push carts all around the city. This is one of my favorite toppings, a sweet and tangy onion sauce. I wanted to make this sauce so I looked around on the web and found several "clone recipes", here is one that I came up with based on a few that sounded good.
Ingredients
1 tbsp olive oil
1 large sweet onion, 4 cups chopped
2 cups water
1 tbsp cornstarch, dissolved in a little cold water
1 tbsp packed brown sugar
2 tbsp tomato paste
1 tsp kosher salt
1/2 tsp of crushed red pepper, or more if you like it spicy
1/4 cup white vinegar
Directions
Heat oil in saucepan over medium heat and add the onions, saute for about 5 minutes until onions are tender but not caramelized. Add the brown sugar, tomato paste, salt and red pepper. Stir and cook for a few minutes to cook off the raw taste of the tomato paste. Add the water and vinegar and simmer for 1 hour. Add the cornstarch while stirring. Increase the heat and bring to a boil, once thickened spoon onion sauce over hot dog with spicy brown mustard. My Patreon page if you would like to help fund this channel www.patreon.com/tomstestkiche...
I get a lot of people asking where they can get certain things that I use in my videos, so I created a Tom's Test Kitchen store on Amazon. You will find everything I could think of that I've used in one way or another in previous videos. Please take a look around, I hope you find what you're looking for, if not just ask. Thanks! www.amazon.com/shop/tomstestk...

I'm gonna have to give that a try Tom! I love a good hotdog! I still get views and comments on that Texas Hot Weiner video I did based on your version. Good stuff!

I made these. They are buy far the closest I’ve come to the Sabrett onions, but they are better.

Ive seen a few of these onion sauce recipe video's and noticed no one has added any Worcestershire sauce, which to my uninitiated mind seems like it would work in this kind of recioe. In your opinion, would W sauce just not work with this?

All of that work, only to use a subpar hot dog. Cmon man.

I didn't say what hot dog I used in the video. I believe they were Nathan's.

There are no pepper red flakes or vinegar in the ingredients for the Sabrett onion sauce. Where do you get off implementing and revamping their original recipe?

It contains fumaric acid, which I don't have access to so I used vinegar. As for the red pepper, the last ingredient is just spices. I add the red pepper because I like it a little spicy.
