Probert was the coolest guy ever in the league. I saw him play in Toronto and when the team came out and he stepped onto the ice, he was a huge presence. He had the cool factor. The Wings were skating around before the game and most eyes weren't on Yzerman or anyone else. Most people were watching Probert.
Agree 100%... I'm a Blackhawk fan but when Bob Probert was on the ice I was watching him whether he was playing for the Wings or the Blackhawks....! He had that attraction, that magnetism...! Loved #24
I didn't really start to seriously get into hockey until I was about 9 or 10 so I dont remember much before 1994 but it was indeed a great time to love hockey as a kid in Michigan! I remember very distinctly being disappointed about losing in the Cup Final to New Jersey but also not being old enough to quite exactly understand it all yet haha.
@@oldjarhead386 Gretzky, Lemieux, Jagr, Yzerman, Sakic, Forsberg, Hull, Modano, etc seemed to do just fine during the "clutch and grab" era. McDavid and Matthews are amazing talents, but how much of that is because nobody is allowed to touch them? How good would they be if they had to fight for every inch of ice? Hockey was better in the 90's.
I’d never seen this clip, until now. Man this game had it all. First, Belfour gets peppered early, and yanked for Cloutier. McGill & Probert go, and ends with the 2nd knockdown. McKay comes back against Grimson, and bloodies his nose. Kocur scores on the penalty shot! Grimson & Kocur have a decent scrap, and ends in a draw. McGill smashes Chiasson with the dirty face-to-the-dasher smash. Chelios dumps Probert on his ass, with a good check. Then two power play goals to close it out. Both teams had so many beloved players, several not even featured, since it’s a “rough stuff” video montage.
Holy cow that last punch by Probert! So many of his fights were like that. "Oh hey this guy is holding his own against Probert .. oh... wait... oh dear."
@@jamesfranke4521 Then maybe you should have been more specific in your comment. One thing that can't be argued is no one in today's game would beat Probert.
Minor nitpick, Mickey Redmond is and always has been a color commentator rather than a play-by-play man. They are separate roles. That doesn't take anything away from Mickey's greatness and longevity in his role, but we should be sure to call what he does by its correct name. In this video, Mickey Redmond is paired with Dave Strader, who worked several years in Detroit. The other play-by-play guy who has been paired with Mickey for many years is Ken Daniels.
@@jameslara4171 Nope! Here are the relevant NHL rules regarding the infraction: "Throwing Equipment - If a member of the defending team throws or shoots any object within his defensive zone, including a stick, at the puck or puck carrier (Rule 53.7) Interference - If a member of the defending team throws or shoots any object at a player on a breakaway in the neutral or attacking zone (Rule 56.6)" And Kocur made it count!
The old Norris division was like the fight club, every team had 2-3 great fighters Probert, Kocur, Darren Kimble, Wendel Clark, Basil McRae, Shane Charla, Dave Manson
I miss these games the fighting the Hard checking the great play is back in the day. I miss the games. Are you now it’s like watching two kids play Pair to this Rest in peace, Bob Robert we miss you all a good time to play for the Red Wings, and in the Blackhawks with Thank you so much
Yep, when hockey was so much fun to watch...! Man I loved this era.... Both teams with tough guys that battled.... Probie my all time favorite, even though I was a Hawk fan, Bob was the best EVER in that role... I can't explain the anticipation when a big game was coming up between the Blackhawks and Wings or with the North Stars, it was unreal.....! How about the rematch of Probie and Domi at the Garden in NY...? Everybody was talking about that... Loved it and now, not so much...!
This hockey was way more entertaining than today's tennis matches but I sure wouldn't want to play it... but then these days I can't tap my fingers on the table without falling on my ass. I think the present game is discriminating against bigger slower players. Bring the neutral zone back.
That thing was a beast. I think it had five manuals (keyboards) and the pedalboard, for a total of six divisions (groupings of pipes). Most church organs, by comparison, usually only have a great division, a swell division, and the pedal division, three in total; large/old church organs might add a choir or positiv (poz-ih-TEEV, as the word comes from French) division and have four divisions. That beast in "the Madhouse on Madison" had at least six.
This was one of only eight road games that the Red Wings won, that season. What's even crazier is that they still managed to make the playoffs despite that.
RIP .... Steve Chaisson 1999-drunk driving accident Bryan Murray 2017 -colon cancer Shawn Burr 2013 - massive brain trauma from a fall at his home… Was battling leukemia also. Bob Probert 2010- heart attack
So crazy that they pulled Belfort. He was so good. But man those wings were so good through the 90s weren't they ?!. Probert was so tough but could put the puck in the net too
When hockey was hockey. Current NHL ended the Gordie Howe forward in favor of European speed skaters. The game will never be the same. Sad that games like this will never happen again and the Gordie Howe forward and Howe hat trick are over.
Good lord, I looked up the old box score for this game and there were 19 penalties, including 6 for fighting, 1 for roughing and a misconduct, lol. Bob McGill for Chicago had 22 penalty minutes followed by Grimson with 12 and Kocur with 11.
Classic Norris hockey with this brutal rivalry. The game is so much faster today & the skill is ridiculous, but this is when hockey was more of a battle than playing a game. Oh I miss the old time hockey, organ playing during the fights, seeing no net against the backboards was just as weird as seeing when they put them up for the first time.
I never realized the organ during the fights until you mentioned it! You are right they did used to play the organ during fights. I miss that organ! Not sure if they still play the organ now but if they do I feel like it’s not as often as they used to
This must be the game that prompted the league to shut down all arena organists from playing while the action was live. How the F is a guy, for example, supposed to try a penalty shot while the organist is jacking along?
Love in the Probert McGill fight where McGill is going down after several hard Probert shots and Probert literally lifts him back onto his skates one handed to pound on him some more
