Here's a little factoid; the Dance done at the beginning by the Native American brother is a special dance that he had to study for years under the direction of his tribal leaders and only he can perform it with their full approval and permission once he perfected the art of this particular dance. This was a special visual treat we got to see today!
Take note - this is LIVE!!! And it's a 4-man band producing a MONSTER sound!!! This is REAL musicianship - songwriting and performing. Not like the trash today.
Redbone was an amazing Native American band that traveled around the world! Lolly and Pat Vegas also wrote songs for many artists. Jimmy Hendrix said that Lolly Vegas was one of the best guitar players he'd ever heard! Before Redbone Lolly and Pat Vegas played the clubs on the Sunset Strip!
Jimi himself had Cherokee blood lines from his Mom's side. Jimi encouraged Lolly to form a Native American band as well, and in fact suggested the name Redbone (Lolly's nickname). Great stuff ✌🏽
Grew up watching Midnight Special. Bands/Groups had to bring it because the performances were live. No auto-tune here. They played the instruments and performed without any voice enhancements.
I don't remember if they did. I'm 70 now and I saw them way back in 1975. Come and get your love was a big hit for them at the time and they were the opening act for Grand Funk Railroad.
Amazing Native American (redbone ) band, loved the song since it debut in 1974. I was in high school then. I am a multiracial Native American “Apache, Spaniard, Mexican proud of my roots.
Holy shit. I’ve heard this song hundreds of times in my life and I never knew who the band was or sang. Never expected it to be a Native American band. This is amazing!
back then AM radio was better than FM radio. i used to listen to this and as soon as it went off i would furiously turn the radio dial to try and find it again! it is such a great song!
😂 Yes! We had to do what we had to do, mostly on hope. Luckily when a song was still hot it was being played somewhere, until the next new thing. Then it was waiting on a one of lists, maybe an hour before it was played again, then a few times a day.
Thanks, kids! Redbone were "Indigenous people"... they featured their heritage in this live performance... everyone was blown away - it was a popular radio song at the time.. but most of didn't know anything about them... Love it!
Thank you for playing one of my requests. I believe the drummer still lives in Southern California. Please play “Whipping Post” by the Allman Brothers.
They were such a fun band. Wish we would have heard much more from them and more like them! There are a lot of stellar performances from The Midnight Special.
This band was so underrated, as are alot of other talented Native Americans like Robbie Robertson (The Band), Rita Coolidge, Carlos Nakai, A Tribe Called Red, etc. For more cultural diversity check out The Hu, Mongolian throat singers (official video of either Yuve Yuve Yu or Wolf Totem) 🎶🎵💚
I was born in ‘61, so I was privileged to grow up with ‘70’s and ‘80’s music…I love reliving the music of my youth through your eyes. Love your channel!!!🖖🏻🇨🇦
😍💕 Y'all are exactly right! We are all mutts 😆 My mom's, mom was a🏵 Sioux native American woman who married an Irishman 🍀and they had my mama.. My dad's grand-dad was Italian, Greek and Turkish, and his grandmother was 100% Italian. They moved to America, from 🇮🇹 Italy with my dad's dad and my grandmother was 100% Greek 🇬🇷. It took all those people and all those cultures to make me..An American mutt 😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁
My dad used to tell us we were all mongrels, didn’t understand it then, but now I do as I am made up of a similar mixture👍 have Irish & Italian, but to have Native American, that’s special✊❤️
Yes Redbone was Native American, & the Dance is called the "Fancy Dance", Pan-Indian dancing, Fancy Feather or Fancy War Dance is a style of dance some believe was originally created by members of the Ponca tribe in the 1920s and 1930s, in an attempt to preserve their culture and religion. It is loosely based on the War dance. Please react to more, they have many hits out there!!!
Loved this song. They performed this song on the navajo reservation throughout the northern arizona. I saw them performed in person. They were awesome. Glad they are still remembered all these years. Stay safe.❤😊
Midnight Special had the most popular bands play live on it every Friday night. For many of us that lived in states that didn't have many concerts this was our way to see our favorite bands play live. You could do a deep dive on judt the Midnight Special. So much great music!
Theses guys had some great Albums. Discovered them like a lot of people when GOTG 1 came out. Their albums Message on a drum and Wovoka are worth your time.
This song was the cut back in the day, one of my favorites, you would have to hear the 45 single to really get into the song. Them singing it live was good but the 45 single was happening with some mad beats and funky rhythm back then. Yeah the single audio version would have been great to listen to, although it was also great to see them again on you guys RU-vid channel.
I love watching yall's reactions. It's refreshing seeing younger people giving all genres of music a listen to and sharing with everybody. I've got so many good suggestions for ya'll, but for now I'll just say you gotta do Bob Seger. Start out with "Her Strut". I'm sure you will like it and from there you'll find more of his great music.
Check out Durand Jones and Thee Indications, Thee Sacred Souls, Monophonics, Thee Sinseers, etc cause there's a whole lot of bands coming out with that soul sound!
It's awesome that you guys heard of Redbone I grew up listening to them! They toured Europe and the world. the first Native Americana to go around the world! I'm Native American,Navajo they were our inspiration growing and to be renown is awesome 🤘😎
Before MTV(when MTV actually played music) this is what we would watch. I remember trying to be home in time to watch "Midnight Special". Lots of great music!
@@waynecanning4122 Time in a Bottle by Jim Croce. I was about 6 yrs old when I 1st heard my Momma play the record n I'd have her play it over n over again. Lol As I got older it never left my mind not only bcuz I still loved it but bcuz of diff sentimental reasons 🥺💗
“It sounds like an amusement park song”. I busted out laughing cuz it was! And a roller skating song. I was 14 when this song topped the charts on Casey Kasem’s top 40 countdown in 1973. 😂
I found you guys a few months ago and I've watched hours of your videos. I absolutely love all of your personalities~! I love how open you are to learning about other music and various videos. You have great attitudes as you converse about the videos you watch... I just think you're awesome~! There was only one thing wrong... lol... I wanted to tell you about "Black Betty" so bad... I couldn't wait... it was one of my favorite songs when I was in school... and then I saw your video on it... lol. I'm so glad you liked it. I've spent my whole life being a vocalist and sang in bands as well as opened for some bands that were popular when I was young that still tour sometimes. I've thought of so many songs to tell you about but someone has already beat me to the punch. LOL and you've already heard them. Sooooooo, I'm really thinking hard on what to ask you listen to.... you'll be hearing from me when I figure it out.. 😊I think it's cool that some of your audience is older also. Just goes to show you that you're good with people! You are all cute, witty, funny and most of all you have good hearts... it really shows! Keep up the good work! By the way, I was wondering if you had ever gone live and let your audience ask questions about you or have you shared about yourselves a little bit and I just haven't caught that video yet? I think that would be fun! Oh, by the way, I'm from Oklahoma~! 😍😉
I agree, Annie! I grew up in the 60s and 70s and I love seeing these young men appreciating all kinds of music. You are all fun to watch and I love your comments! Thanks!
Oh!!! I have another really good one from Charlie Daniel's band. It tells a story. The wooly Swamp. Album edition, the song you're listening to is from the opening of Gardians of the Galaxy movie.
First guitar *Power Chord* (1958) was invented by Native American *Link Wray* . Used by ALL Hard Rock and Punk Bands today - his most famous *song without words* was banned from radio in fear teens would riot after hearing it. Highly recommend reacting to this Instrumental Rock Song: *Rumble* ~ *Link Wray - Rumble - 11/19/1974* ~
🦋 as many times as I heard the music I did not know the following- Redbone is an American rock band founded in 1969 by brothers Pat and Lolly Vegas. All band members during their commercial peak were of Mexican American and Native American heritage, which was reflected in their songs, stage costumes, and album art.
I am 73 years old I danced at the disco clubs dancing to thissong and others! Talk about a blast from the past! Judging from you guys dancing to them from the seats, now you know what it was like for us! Great song, I wasin my early 20's when it came out. Thanks for the memories by playing it! 🙋🌹
I used to be a bartender for a "Cowboy and Indian " bar in New Mexico near Shiprock Rezervation. One older gentleman used to promote shows and knew all the early stars when they were young. He had great Redbone stories. That was a fun job.
Alright guys I have one for you. The song is Hallelujah by Pentatonix. Has 700 million views. Mitch, the guy with the hat, goes angel mode. You won’t regret it I promise
So, I came across Cartier Family one way or the other, and I am glad I did! I am binging all of your videos and I love yall! Not sure if you all have heard of Hall and Oates, Lisa Stansfield and Jane Child, check them out. They are classic soulful white singers! Y'all are welcome!
I remember dancing to this song when I was 13! Still love it! LOL I'd like to see y'all react to Cover of the Rolling Stone by Dr Hook and the Medicine Show. One of my favorites! I love watching y'all!
I'm Hapa - Mexican and White, from Oakland. "mutt" is for dogs. Hapa origin is Hawaiian. And I think the same of the "n" word. Better words for ourselves. We should all try to be Fam. God bless you guys! And thanks for this video. Two of the members are brothers who started in the early 60s. Jimi Hendrix told them to go with the Indian thing. Jimi has Native family, too. (Though, apparently a lot of Jimi's wardrobe was inspired by his grandmother's Flapper Girl outfits from her trunk!). PS It's a small token of 'war paint' around his mouth. May be something spiritual to awakening his best vocal? no idea. it does look funny ;)
So many people are unaware of WHO & WHAT Link Wray contributed to Rock+Roll. But many Indigenous musicians are just NOW getting recognition due. PEACE to you. At least WE KNOW!!!
The documentary, Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked the World is so incredible. Just mind blowing how itegral the influence of Native American traditional music was on music like the blues, both instrumental and vocals. Also the big influence on rock music, many rockers who we don't even realize were of some Native American descent, incl Jimi Hendrix. Highly recommended. Of course Redbone is in the documentary, and a lot about Link Wray, plus other rockers.
@@jenniferfoster1692 YES!! I watched that documentary. I was surprised to learn how many Natives were/are in the Music biz. I had saved it on my DVR, until hard drive quit. Had to replace it, but am sure it will come on again.🤞🎸 I love Rita Coolidge Walela and Robbie Robertson. Native music is so calming and heals my Spirit🪶 DONT need no CALM app. Just play my lists I've made.
