I'm amazed that your paint is not waterlogged overnight. I find no matter what I do the paints are big droplets of wet paint. I'll try emptying the excess water (I believe I've tried this) and then sealing tightly. However, I don't find I want to use paints between session. I use Kimera paints and mix everything. I tend to fill my palette pretty quickly. It would be nice though as I do waste a bit of paint when I need just a brushtip of a colour and have to dispense a full drop.

It's a super fine line between just enough moisture and too much moisture. You pretty much need to make sure that there's enough moisture to saturate the sponge, and that's it. Even just a tiny bit too much will lead to water logging.

I have just the opposite problem my paints seem to dry out overnight, i dont think mine gets a good seal when i close it

I have an original red grass palette. The only good part about it is the form factor. I immediately replaced the membranes with parchment paper - I found the paint soaked into the original membranes so small mixes would become unusable. After a while (a few years) the sponges started to stink so I replaced them with paper towel. I have to say: I don't notice much difference. I wash my parchment to re-use it after a session - I find all wet palette over-water paint left overnight. I throw out the parchment between models and toss the towel between parchments.

I've never found water to fully permeate through the membrane, but rather oversaturation around the sponge causing water to condense and collect on the lid (which then drips back down onto the paint palette sheet). The trick (and it's a fine line) is to saturate the sponge JUST enough to be moist, and not much more. If you see any water collecting/pooling around in the palette, you've got too much. I've never had the oversaturation/soaking issue since I've started carefully managing moisture levels for overnight storage.

@@JohnathanHo That's interesting. I tried your advice recently, using a eyedropper to pull out excess water, and still had the same issue. It seems like unless the concentration of water in the sponge matches exactly that concentration of water in your paint it will always absorb water from the sponge until equilibrium is reached. With the lid open, then the speed at which the water passes through the membrane is more important, although the chances of having that perfectly match the rate of evaporation in your specific environment is highly unlikely. I wonder if the amount of paint, the type of paint, and your preferred thinning plays a part.

@@JohnathanHo if this were the case there would be drops of water randomly spread over the palette. In my case only the points where the paints were have extra water. I think it comes down to some people have the kind of paint and environment that suits it, and some people don't.

Previous version coupdn't handle heavy body acrylics, does this version handle them ok or still just able to handle miniature paints?
@JohnathanHo
@JohnathanHo Год назад
I have not tried using heavy body acrylics, but I imagine that because the palette sheet in this new version has a more waxed, surface that it can probably handle them better than the older version. However, if the acrylics aren't spread in a thin layer on the palette, I don't think moisture will really saturate well throughout, and I think you'll still have surface drying issues with the paint. As it is still an acrylic, I think it will clean off just fine, although it might take a little bit more scrubbing.

Hey there brother, just some friendly advice. You should look into some processing apps and plugins for your microphone input audio. there are some peaks which are pretty rough to listen to and i think you could make it sound a lot better pretty easily

Audio is definitely something I've been struggling with for sure. I'm still trying to learn the ins and outs of editing it properly. I appreciate the remarks though, as it means I still need to do a better job!

@@JohnathanHo i dont have any experience post processing video or anything, but i did muck around with some mic processing just to make my mic input sound as good as possible for gaming and make sure it was gated obviously etc. but yea, it was really easy and maybe if you filter the input you wont have to worry about processing your audio as much later. who knows its not my forte like i said and i dont want to be rude or anything just some constructive criticism. take care bro

How to you reccomend washing the re-usable parchment?
@JohnathanHo
@JohnathanHo Год назад
You can just use water (temperature is irrelevant, I've found, although warm/hot water helps if paint is dried/stuck on). You can see how I wash it at 13:55

To each their own. I think they work phenomenally well compared to Mastersons, or even DIY (although my studio air quality is much drier, and so hydration I've found is a problem that the Redgrass palette solves for me).

Tried it. Not the same; doesn't keep paints workable anywhere near as long (in a single session or over a period of days) compared to these. Is it much cheaper? Sure. But these palettes help me paint more efficiently, which means as a tool, they're far more valuable than any DIY solution I've tried in the past.

@@JohnathanHo this. 100%. Its a hack job solution, definitely better than nothing but the RGG ones are orders of magnitude more useful. Cant wait to get one after this review!

Too bad that it's impossible to get their stuff. It's either not in stock, awaiting restock, or going to be available in the future. I know they are a smaller company but their business model of kickstarting is very frustrating for those who missed out... well got to stick with army painter meh palette

@@JohnathanHo Agreed, Redgrass palette is really something else, it's even much better than for example cheaper Army Painter wet palette..
