I saw it in a cinema and the scene where Darth Vader kills the rebel a 5 year old kid behind me started screaming because he though Darth Vader was a good guy for some reason.

I liked Rogue One. But I also enjoyed this commentary track. Twenty years ago, the British music magazine had a feature called The Reaper, where the author took the piss out of "sacred cows". The feature was discontinued before The Reaper tackled two of my artistic heroes - Stanley Kubrick and John Coltrane. As much as I love these two men, it wouldn't feel like a personal attack to see them mercilessly cut down to size, whether fairly or in an exaggerated manner for comedic impact.

After listening to this commentary I have come to the conclusion...that everyone thinks about Star Wars too much.

Anytime I see that Scout walker hear Rich’s voice on The Nerd Crew shouting, “AT-ST! AT-ST!”

What has always been weird in Star Wars is how seemingly nobody's can show up at the rebel's command planning table front row and center to give their input on what the rebels should do next.

I think their Half in the Bag review was spot on - Rogue One is the greatest piece of Star Wars fanfilm ever made. And it feels exactly like a Star Wars fanfilm.

That's unsettling, they don't even try to cover Peter Cushing's enormous bald spot. How's that for a CGI kick in the balls when you're dead.

I remember when they announced this movie at some con or something and the teaser for it was a voice over of Alex Guinness with his “before the dark times” line as the camera slowly panned over this forested landscape and up into the sky and you saw the outline of the Death Star looming over the planet while a slowed down, sinister version of the Imperial March played. Then the screen cut to black and you heard a bunch of radio transmissions from the “rebels” who were stealing the plans and they all start turning frantic and panicked as they seemingly die one by one, until it’s just a bunch of garbled screams. Then the title came up. It was incredible. Made it almost seem like a horror movie.

Rich nailed it with his take that people love it because it makes them feel like a grown up justified watching Star Wars. The series was never about being serious or gritty, I don’t know what this obsession with trying to turn it into that is.

For Me personally, I love this film!

I think visually (costumes, props, ship design, even the haircuts etc.) Rogue One perfectly blends in with the OT. The cgi effects look very Star Wars-y, for example, the Star Destroyers have the look of the old models; kinda pale, white, over-exposed a little - which is great because it blends seamlessly with A New Hope. So, visually, it's a perfect Star Wars movie. Even the pacing and choreography of the space battle over Scarif screams Star Wars in and out. Also, what I liked a lot is that the Imperials were at least a bit of a threat. Their officers were not a bunch of inept, whiny whimps like in the god-awful sequels. Granted, taking out stormtroopers with a stick is really lame, but at least during the ground battle on Scarif, the troopes were kinda competent. Especially Vader's Star Destroyer arriving at the end kinda made you feel the menace of the Empire. Still, a faint echo of the Empire we know from the Empire Strikes Back, but it's anough to not be annoyingly incompetent. BUT, the characterss and the plot (apart from K2SO, Krennic and that veteran blue X-Wing commander) are so lame that it's not canon to me. Even though all the fanboys and girls drool over Vader's lightsaber mayhem at the end, I feel it's totally out of character for Vader as we know him from the OT. (Granted, it's clearly in line with prequel Anakin's character, but that one sucked as well, so it's not canon to me, either.) So, summarizing, Rogue One looks and feels like a good Star Wars movie, but the story and characters suck ass.

I love how Vader just stands there watching the ship fly off - if only there were some kind of force he could have called upon to stop it getting away.

The screenplay is the main downfall. Jin had a very thin character. She said that her nature was to "rebel", but she barely demonstrated that.

Rogue one has better characters than the new trilogy. Bring it.

Gareth Edwards is a great director. Unfortunately his films are close to being amazing but something is missing. Monsters, Godzilla and Star Wars are all missing something but they all look amazing.

I remember leaving this film and thinking "that was boring. Who the hell were those characters...?" But then EEEEEVERYBODY talked about how much they loved it. I felt like I'd seen a different movie. Then I watched Half in the Bag about it and felt normal again. I get people love this film but I wholeheartedly agree with RLM. The characters are just nothings. Complete shadow cut outs. A friend who loved it couldn't believe I didn't. I asked him to name any of the characters other than Jyn and Cassian. He couldn't, and he couldn't even remember those 2 names.

I think the worst part of the movie, is how they turned the Death Star’s exhaust port weakness from a massive oversight to a planned sabotage. Before it was actually kind of poignant, that despite all their hubris and overconfidence, the Empire was able to overlook such a massive design flaw for their super weapon. That they were essentially brought down by their own hand. But now it’s just because Mads Mikkelsen did it, he put it in there intentionally. If Krennic never brought him back then the Death Star would’ve been indestructible. Who needs subtext? Just explain everything in the most literal way possible because some fans complained about it.

Vader’s lair is on mustafar in order to remind him of his defeat to Kenobi so his connection to the dark side remains strong.

You guys asked some questions that were actually answered in the film 1. Jyn and Co. were taken to Saw because she name dropped him. 2. Not all the rebel leaders agreed not to fight. Raddus wanted to fight. As soon as he heard Jyn and Co. were there at Scarif he went to help. Once Mon Mothma heard Raddus went she said fuck it, let's fight, rather than leave Raddus out there to get obliterated. 3. Jyn and Cassian didn't leave the planet because they didn't think gate was open. They weren't even sure the transmission got through. If I recall Brody was the go between and he got killed.

I took my two boys to the theatre to watch this, they were 10 & 12 at the time. They both really liked this movie, at the time we thought it was better then the prequels, but not as good as the original trilogy. But we did like it a lot and found it exciting because of the battle at the end, it was one of the best in the series.

Am I the only one who just has all the movies past the first real trilogy, just bleeding into one featureless blob of a distant memory?

It's kinda dumb that all of the people are dirty. I can't think of anybody being dirty in the OT. They get dirty after they fall down the garbage chute but they had to do a thing in the movie to get dirty.

Of all the recent Star Wars films, I actually think this is their best effort.

Something I learned from this film is that you can incapacitate people who are wearing armour by hitting them with a stick.

The only thing I remember about this movie is that my boyfriend got mad at me for falling asleep in the middle of the screening.

I can't believe they didn't make mention of the uncanny valley Leia at the end.

Needed more intro of why Jynn joined the rebellion. It just jumps to her in a van and it’s like did I miss something? Weird decision by the director

One thing I did really like is how it explains that the flaw in the death star was intentionally desinged and carefully hidden as to not be discovered.

Zombie Stormtroopers? No thanks. Rogue One is a brilliant movie. I don't care if it doesn't "feel like" a Star Wars movie. It IS one. And how it ties up loose ends makes it way better. This is the 4th best star wars movie. What more can you ask for?

At least when i watched Rogue One it visually felt like a Star Wars movie. When i watched The Last Jedi and Rise of Skywalker it felt like some Marvel movies.

I actually wished they didn't shy away from a scarier Empire with Star Wars things. They're such a joke in everything outside the Original Trilogy, with Mandalorian mixing it up with a more desperate, shadowy Imperial Remnant.

I might be in the minority, but this is my second favorite SW movie behind Empire. It's the dirty dozen in space. That's enough for me.

To answer your question. I took my 10 year old daughter to see Rogue One and she loved it. To this day it's her favorite Star Wars movie.

I remember being bored in this film and not being sure why. Thankfully RLM understand my emotions better than I do 😅. The end battle was good and Vader gave me a fan boner but now he's being wheeled out on every SW show he's losing his impact.

If they thought fan service was the biggest problem with The Force Awakens then I now doubt their credibility.

I'm not a big Star Wars fan, I watched episode 3 and really liked because I didn't know that Anakin was Darth Vader. I really liked Rogue One, because it looks like an 80s movie in the Star Wars universe, and that just seems right for me.

This movie's plot is just an exposition for A New Hope. Also, I remember that I didn't like this movie the first time I watched it. Liked it more the second time. I'd definitely rate it higher than The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker.

I think this movie could be saved with the cut. the Intro has to make clear that the mother dies to sell her husbands loyalty. And that the girl doesn’t understand it. Maybe this could be a reveal later. So first she hates the rebels because she thought her father a traitor and her mother not loving her. To later realize what actually happened. Show her growing up with the extremists. Show the split and tension of the different rebel groups. All their flaws that make jinn not care for any of them

I was intrigued by the first scene on that asteroid outpost and was curious about it hoping that a good portion of the movie would take place there. Seedy, cramped, poor, rife with crime and rebellious individuals. Instead we got some stupid tattooine clone. No matter who is in charge they seem to be obsessed with dusty hovels since the Prequels.

I don't really get the notion that it was "nothing but fan service". The only two elements of it were Tarkin, which was more like anti-fan service, and the Vader scene, which was pretty much using him in the absolute best possible way.

This movie was made so they could eliminate starkiller from cannon, absolutely brutal choice made again by Disney. And to the people saying " this one is different" it's possibly worse then the already terrible sequel trilogy. An entire movie about characters that die in the end that we learn absolutely nothing about, it's an absolutely terribly made movie, and don't even get me started on that vader fan fiction scene at the end.

The problem with this was that they effectively had three writers, one that almost understood what the bones of an action adventure is, one that totally understood combat and bad ass action and one that did not have a clue about how to make good character driven stories. If they had fixed the second act this film would be in the high 3 star territory. (Jedi are not boring anyone then any archetype is boring if that is all there is to them.)
