I liked Rogue One. But I also enjoyed this commentary track. Twenty years ago, the British music magazine had a feature called The Reaper, where the author took the piss out of "sacred cows". The feature was discontinued before The Reaper tackled two of my artistic heroes - Stanley Kubrick and John Coltrane. As much as I love these two men, it wouldn't feel like a personal attack to see them mercilessly cut down to size, whether fairly or in an exaggerated manner for comedic impact.

"You shouldn't care about the characters, because they all die at the end ... - Then why am I watching them?" Great summation.
@xen0bia
@xen0bia 3 года назад
When it is put that way, of course it sounds dumb. I don't really agree that there's zero characterization however, I feel we're given enough for this many characters to care for the purpose of a single movie. This ain't a trilogy where you'd be given more time. I almost always find myself agreeing with RLM on movies, but this will forever be the exception. I feel they are overly cynical over this one, more than it really deserves, especially considering the trash that the sequel trilogy would become.
@GumpIncorporated
@GumpIncorporated 3 года назад
@@xen0bia the context you're looking at it from seems less reasonable the context RLM is looking at it from though. There might not be zero characterization but there isn't enough to last a movie, A New Hope didn't give everyone a third a of a characterization with the expectation that there'd be a trilogy to flesh them out over. That kind of mindset is how you wind up with a Phantom Menace or a horribly paced netflix original. Even with something where a character death is incidental you want a strong character in mind otherwise you can just skip killing them if you aren't going to have it mean something to the audience. If your entire movie is an attempt at chronicling a doomed bunch of heroes you'd better go operatic and impactful so you aren't just wasting everyone's time. Which is what the movie winds up being. If it had kept the aesthetic and leaned into how sad everyone dying was with some kind of Slow West style pan over the losses at the end it could have been really impactful but as it stands everyone in it might as well have lived and delivered the plans then been shooed off without thanks like an office bagel boy for how much it meant in the greater scheme of things.

I remember when they announced this movie at some con or something and the teaser for it was a voice over of Alex Guinness with his “before the dark times” line as the camera slowly panned over this forested landscape and up into the sky and you saw the outline of the Death Star looming over the planet while a slowed down, sinister version of the Imperial March played. Then the screen cut to black and you heard a bunch of radio transmissions from the “rebels” who were stealing the plans and they all start turning frantic and panicked as they seemingly die one by one, until it’s just a bunch of garbled screams. Then the title came up. It was incredible. Made it almost seem like a horror movie.

I think visually (costumes, props, ship design, even the haircuts etc.) Rogue One perfectly blends in with the OT. The cgi effects look very Star Wars-y, for example, the Star Destroyers have the look of the old models; kinda pale, white, over-exposed a little - which is great because it blends seamlessly with A New Hope. So, visually, it's a perfect Star Wars movie. Even the pacing and choreography of the space battle over Scarif screams Star Wars in and out. Also, what I liked a lot is that the Imperials were at least a bit of a threat. Their officers were not a bunch of inept, whiny whimps like in the god-awful sequels. Granted, taking out stormtroopers with a stick is really lame, but at least during the ground battle on Scarif, the troopes were kinda competent. Especially Vader's Star Destroyer arriving at the end kinda made you feel the menace of the Empire. Still, a faint echo of the Empire we know from the Empire Strikes Back, but it's anough to not be annoyingly incompetent. BUT, the characterss and the plot (apart from K2SO, Krennic and that veteran blue X-Wing commander) are so lame that it's not canon to me. Even though all the fanboys and girls drool over Vader's lightsaber mayhem at the end, I feel it's totally out of character for Vader as we know him from the OT. (Granted, it's clearly in line with prequel Anakin's character, but that one sucked as well, so it's not canon to me, either.) So, summarizing, Rogue One looks and feels like a good Star Wars movie, but the story and characters suck ass.

I think the worst part of the movie, is how they turned the Death Star’s exhaust port weakness from a massive oversight to a planned sabotage. Before it was actually kind of poignant, that despite all their hubris and overconfidence, the Empire was able to overlook such a massive design flaw for their super weapon. That they were essentially brought down by their own hand. But now it’s just because Mads Mikkelsen did it, he put it in there intentionally. If Krennic never brought him back then the Death Star would’ve been indestructible. Who needs subtext? Just explain everything in the most literal way possible because some fans complained about it.

Also the Darth Vader hallway scene, while visually amazing, makes the opening of New Hope look farcical in retrospect. Because when Vader boards Leia’s ship in New Hope, she makes a big stink about how they’re on a diplomatic mission and Vader’s boarding was completely unwarranted. But now all I think of is Vader in his mind going, “bitch, I just tried to board this ship like an hour ago. I actually saw you run from the big space battle with the plans. Who are you trying to fool?” It makes Leia in that scene look like an idiot.

It never was a plot hole, the exhaust port is a narrative device: In every classical adventure the dark fortress or besieged town has a secret passage. No matter if we look and read up the really old stuff or the later Hollywood films picking up the old themes: Arabian Nights, Conan, LOTR Helm's deep, Indiana Jones etc etc etc there is ALWAYS somebody exploiting a "secret" passage. And even in SW the trench is well guarded, was kept secret and cod only be penetrated because Luke was aided by the force. There is no reason at all to call this a plot holenand to turn this into being apologetic about Rougue One. There is indeed one plothole in SW (or so it seems to me) and that's: The rebels use these fancy torpedoes that can move in right angles and we never see those again... would have come in handy later on, no? Raddus wanted to fight. As soon as he heard Jyn and Co. were there at Scarif he went to help. Once Mon Mothma heard Raddus went she said fuck it, let's fight, rather than leave Raddus out there to get obliterated. 3. Jyn and Cassian didn't leave the planet because they didn't think gate was open. They weren't even sure the transmission got through. If I recall Brody was the go between and he got killed.

Genuine question, what loose ends needed tying up? I still stand by the assertion that Rogue One, and how it relates to the canon is completely pointless. Who cares *how* they got the Death Star plans, we already knew that they did. It’s all just superfluous detail, just like every other time Star Wars feels the need to explain the smallest of plot devices ad nauseam, usually to the detriment of the movie. Also there are parts of Rogue One, and things that it implies, that are actively harmful to elements of New Hope and retroactively make it seem like a lesser movie.

It helped prop up the Rebels as the plucky underdogs who could use the Empire’s own flaws against them. This movie's plot is just an exposition for A New Hope. Also, I remember that I didn't like this movie the first time I watched it. Liked it more the second time. I'd definitely rate it higher than The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker.

This is Shakespeare against episodes 7-9, without a doubt.

And what about 1-3... and perhaps 6?

But...things actually happen in 7-9 (ok, not 9, that was just dog crap), and there are actual characters instead of walking attitudes with weapons.

I think this movie could be saved with the cut. the Intro has to make clear that the mother dies to sell her husbands loyalty. And that the girl doesn’t understand it. Maybe this could be a reveal later. So first she hates the rebels because she thought her father a traitor and her mother not loving her. To later realize what actually happened. Show her growing up with the extremists. Show the split and tension of the different rebel groups. All their flaws that make jinn not care for any of them

I was intrigued by the first scene on that asteroid outpost and was curious about it hoping that a good portion of the movie would take place there. Seedy, cramped, poor, rife with crime and rebellious individuals. Instead we got some stupid tattooine clone. No matter who is in charge they seem to be obsessed with dusty hovels since the Prequels.

@Swen They tried to combine a typical heist plot with a character study; since a movie simply doesn't have the capacity to deal with both things at the same time , they failed. The premise of the heist could have worked if the story had focused on the planning and execution of the heist or Jinn's own journey. Cassian Andor simply felt like the Han Solo fill-in, but minus the swash buckler vibe or charisma in general. The other characters were bland as well.

I don't really get the notion that it was "nothing but fan service". The only two elements of it were Tarkin, which was more like anti-fan service, and the Vader scene, which was pretty much using him in the absolute best possible way.

_"I have the unpopular opinion that Jedi are boring as shit."_ - Rich Evans Couldn't agree more. You can include the Sith and the just Force in general.

This movie was made so they could eliminate starkiller from cannon, absolutely brutal choice made again by Disney. And to the people saying " this one is different" it's possibly worse then the already terrible sequel trilogy. An entire movie about characters that die in the end that we learn absolutely nothing about, it's an absolutely terribly made movie, and don't even get me started on that vader fan fiction scene at the end.

The problem with this was that they effectively had three writers, one that almost understood what the bones of an action adventure is, one that totally understood combat and bad ass action and one that did not have a clue about how to make good character driven stories. If they had fixed the second act this film would be in the high 3 star territory. (Jedi are not boring anyone then any archetype is boring if that is all there is to them.)
