REDPOLLS - Guide to the ID of British Garden Birds No.4

I usually look out for redpolls in the garden each year during January, February and March.
Most years I will see at least 3 or 4 lesser redpolls but 2012 was exceptional when I had up to 10 visiting from January through to March including a number of Common or Mealy Redpolls
which are classified as scarce in Shropshire.

Great Video Maurice, I did not realize you have not been long into videoing. Your videos are better then most professionals. You must have a natural talent, the way you capture the footage. Really is great work. We had Redpolls visit about 2 years ago for the first time. I heard this strange sound in the trees, looked up and had no idea what they where so had to look them up. They visited just as the Ash trees where coming into leaf.

Oh my word - have just seen my very first Redpoll (Lesser I think, thanks to your excellent video). At first we thought female brown cap or young Linnet. So beautiful. We’ve never had so many different birds in the garden. Our regulars are stunning Goldfinches and Long Tailed Tits. Maybe they’ve told all their friends to visit us. Thank you for such a lovely video.

The lesser redpoll is my favourite finch. I have many in my garden at winter. I find them as majestic as the robin.

I filmed these birds in my garden on my niger feeder’s . I think they were lesser redpolls because of the black bib. I originally put out niger seed to attract goldfinch which it did lots of them . But I have never seen these birds before.I wasn’t aware of this species either. I have also had gold crests annually visiting my conifer tree s in my garden. This little breed of finch is probably now my favourite . Especially the male with its shimmering pink breast. They are beautiful little birds.

Being from Central Lancashire these are species that we don’t see too often and I admit I struggle at times between the two. This video was wonderfully presented and with great descriptions of these two redpolls. Thank you and I’m glad you got into videography.

Another fine installment in the series. Redpolls are one of my favorites, too. We have the common redpoll in my region. Sometimes I get a couple mixed in with a flock of pine siskins, other times I will get a flock of redpolls themselves at the feeders as they migrate from Canada into the Wisconsin North Woods during winter.

Thank you for watching and commenting. Do you ever get the Arctic or Hoary redpoll in your area, I gather that they can be a bit difficult to identify from the common redpoll?

Maurice Baker Not that I know of, not that I would probably be able to differentiate as they flit around the feeders.

Delighted to have found this video particularly as I now live in Shrewsbury. Last year we had a large influx of birds into our garden because of the harsh weather and I found the variations in redpoll very hard to fathom. This video will help. Do you have a video on linnets or the differences between them and redpolls? I am not a bird watchers per se just someone who loves seeing them in the garden and when out walking. Thank you once again for posting this outstanding video. Very professional.

24/11/21 saw a bird flying away into the distance with a very white rear. It seemed bigger than a sparrow but not as large as a pigeon. It was flying south towards river Wye from Hereford any ideas what it would have been? Thanks

Still can't distinguish the difference since everything you mentionaed can be in either species by natural variation.
