The Common Redpoll

Although many of us rarely get to see these darling little birds worldwide their numbers are estimated in the tens of millions. Common Redpolls are a member of the winter finches, a group of finches that includes the redpolls, pine siskins, crossbills, and Pine and evening grosbeaks. This group breed in northern Canada, and are for the most part only seen in southern, more populated areas during the winter when these birds irrupt into areas south of their usual range. With common redpolls, this behavior seems to take place every second year and is linked to the production of catkins on birch and alder. A poor crop causes them to move out of their northern range in search of better sources.
Small finches of the arctic tundra and boreal forest The range of the common redpoll extends through northern Europe and Asia to northern North America, Greenland, and Iceland. In Canada, they are resident birds in the 3 territories Their breeding area takes them further north in those territories and over to Newfoundland and Labrador. They also breed throughout Alaska and around the world in the lands that ring the Arctic Ocean.
This beautiful little finch measures just 4.7-5.5 inches, has a small head and short, pointed, seed-eating yellow bill with some black feathering. The tail is short with a small notch at the tip. There is a red patch on their forehead, they have two white wing bars, and are brown and white with heavy streaking. This streaky plumage is quite similar looking to Pine Siskin
Only Adult male redpolls have the reddish tinge on their chest. This is a great mark to use when identifying the sex of common redpolls. A more difficult bird to tell a common redpoll from is the Hoary Redpoll. Hoary's tend to be paler, with less streaking and a smaller bill.
Common Redpolls survive almost entirely on a diet of birch seeds. They also eat many other seeds of willows, alders, and spruce. In addition to seeds, large numbers of spiders and insects are consumed too over summer. Each day they can eat up 42 percent of their body mass.
It's incredible how the Redpoll survives such cold temperatures which is largely thanks to the thick coats of down they grow before the winter season.
Their buzzy sounds and energetic trills and chatters are almost constantly used and can be used to help locate an energetic flock. They are quite acrobatic and can be seen often hanging upside down from an alder cone as they forage. Outside of the breeding season, they are very social, often seen in small groups and flocks with upwards of 50 individuals.
The oldest known wild Common Redpoll was at least 7 years, 10 months old. It lived in Alaska. In Europe, there was apparently a redpoll who lived 25 years in captivity. Remarkably these little birds can be rather wide-ranging as a few banding records have shown. One bird banded in Michigan was recovered in Siberia; others in Alaska have been recovered in the eastern U.S., and a redpoll banded in Belgium was found 2 years later in China.
Try attracting them to your garden by planting birch trees, since these produce their favorite food. Alders too can attract them, as do willows, elm, pine, and some berry trees.
They will happily take advantage of feeders with niger and sunflower seeds, or suet.

Hi Leslie I love your channel. I have a bird who has been visiting my finch feeder and I am unable to identify it. I thought it might be a common red poll but this bird has yellow on its wing on the side and no spots. Is there a email address I can send you a few pictures I've taken so maybe you can identify it. I'm not on facebook or Instagram. Its driving me nuts I can usually identify all the birds who come to visit. I'm wondering if it could be a hybrid??

Hi Spark_ they feed for an hour or two every day at different times during the day. It’s a constant fight over the 8 or 10 perches on the two feeders. And usually 20 on the ground below grabbing all the scraps. My yard has many big pine trees that they can hide in which I think makes them feel safe. Have a great day.

I noticed a small flock for the first time this year in Southern Wisconsin. They flocked about our finch feeder. At first glance, I thought that they were small House Finches. What caught my attention was the brightness of the red spot on the forehead and the smallish size. Beautiful little birds that are fun to watch!

A flock comes by here in Alaska visiting my very forested neighborhood often for a short visit this time of year. They really know how to party. We have about 50 of them out back right now hanging out and eating all of a gallon of seed from my feeders and making a good mess all over the snow. They make it challenging, though welcomed, for the Black-capped and Nut Hatches to to get a bite of anything. Of course, not all the neighbors are happy about this, Mr. Squirrel is certain that everything in those feeders is rightly his to eat and likes his food neat and orderly. He is overwhelmed and at his wits end with the Redpolls out there eating all his food and making such a mess. As for me, I just like to watch them enjoying life through my binoculars and am happy to help these little guys survive a harsh winter. Of course, Im now going to have to go out in deep snow and negative digits and refill those feeders!

I’m in north eastern Wisconsin and I have redpolls this winter! I thought they were Pine Siskins at first but I saw your video and recognized the little red cap. I haven’t watched your videos for a few months. My 9 year kitty Bella used to sit on my lap, and sometimes on the chair alone to watch Lesley the Bird Nerd! She loved your videos!! But we had to give her the last act of kindness😢 she was diagnosed with mammary chain cancer(breast cancer). Thank you for putting out your wonderful videos! This is my first year of seeing these little cuties! I only have a few juncos and quite a few finches and pine siskins. Plus the plumpest assortment of sparrows and, of course, doves. Also nut hatches, several woodpeckers and a blue jay or two. I haven’t seen too much of my cardinal pair this winter. My deck is for the birds in the winter! Great birdwatching for my cats!

Just wanted to say I really love your channel. Here in Interior Alaska my last dog passed away several months ago. Now that my outdoors time isn't spent keeping track of them, I find myself fascinated by the birds that, before, I rarely took the time to even notice. So many red polls, black capped chickadees, boreal chickadees, some kind of woodpecker, boreal owls, and I find myself loving these critters. Oh, and ravens - I've always noticed them and, to the disgust of my poor wife, I can do a pretty good raven call. Every now and then they'll come back around and investigate me, and now and then there would be one that would "play" with my dog, gliding low in front of her so she could give chase, then coming back around and doing it again. I've found Bernd Heinrich to have some great writings, as well as the newly published Rebecca Heisman. Thanks again, you're a great resource!

❌Me & my house cat😸love watching these cute little birds feed all winter long through till April in northern Ontario. I have a nice protected area for them & they come by the dozens. Whenever it’s snowing or raining they feed like crazy!! Sounds like a pet store with all the chatter. I think they are saying “mine” “mine” They love the sunflower chips I put out, sometimes filling up my feeders twice a day. Costly, but worth it. I think they also eat cedar seed, since that is the only trees outside my home. With full, little bellies they have now left to breed further North and have been replaced by grosbeak🐦😁🐤

Northern Illinois, my Thistle seed feeder is getting creamed everyday now for almost 3 weeks!!! Lots of other reports in the area too. What a joy! First time for me. Thought they were Pine Siskens at first, then I saw the red patch! Nice video. Yesterday not only the feeder was packed but there were a bunch on the ground too. Then they’d all flock to a tree and return shortly. What a treat! Got a bunch of pics👍👍

We had never had Redpolls in the past at our feeders. This winter about 20 showed up shortly after Christmas. By the end of January the flock had grow to about 50 Redpolls. Other flocks continued to arrive through February and March. We feed them in 5 different spots in the yard so it makes it a little easier to count them. We have about 200 that we are feeding right now. Early on, we bought Nijer seed in 4 or 8 pound bags. Now we buy it in 25 pound bags and just ordered a 50# bag. They are an expensive hobby, but worth every penny. Our yard has a long row of Spruce trees where they seem to spend the night and there are birch trees scattered throughout the yard. There are so many of them, I'm sure they stripped all of the Birch seed in about 1 day. The Bluejays kinda boss them around, but they do OK with the rest of the birds.

I’m living in SW Scotland and believe I identified 2 male common redpolls that briefly checked out the sunflower seeds on my bird table yesterday morning. I’ve never seen a bird like them, I have a flock of 8 gold finches that visit every day and sparrows , this was a strange hybrid of the two. Deep red on its head with a red/pink flush over the whole of the chest, back had similar markings to a sparrow, perhaps slightly smaller than a sparrow. They didn’t linger, but I think there may have been a small patch of red on their backs too, I’m not sure. So very, very exciting. I’ve had my camera on hand ever since but no more sightings.

There was a vicious cold snap in Minnesota one year well into the negatives Fahrenheit. I found one of these sitting on the side of the road freezing to death because it couldn't fly. I had no idea what kind of bird it was at the time aside from a generic finch thing. Since I already had pet birds, I had an endless supply of seed and fashioned a clean place for it to mend. It took the better part of a week, but its wing healed and flew away gracefully when I let it go. It was one of the more rewarding things I ever did. Now whenever I see redpolls, I smile.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR RESCUING the bird !!! And thank you for being so compassionate !!! I sadly couldn't do any about two birds dead instantly by hitting our window ( at our old vacation house in the mountain in Japan called Karuizawa ,very prestigious mountain resort of Japan ) !!! It was SO SAD !! We all cried !! 😢 one of 'em broke her/ his neck ,so died instantly ,but the other one wasn't ! That's how now I remember. I guess ,I deleted it from my memory now !! Too sad !! We hired some window experts & we got the lined ones ! It wasn't really fair for birds as our windows were always sparkling clean as my mom ,grandma, aunts ,everyone cleaned 'em so - sparkling clean every single day ( we Japanese do that ,maybe no more w/ the new generations !? ) & our gorgeous trees reflections on the window fooled 'em !!! They thought it was an open path between trees !!! 🌳 It really broke my heart !! 💔💔💔 Definitely one of the saddest things I've ever witnessed in my life !! Very sadly ,I have tons of incredibly sad things I had to witness !!! 💔💜🥁🐉🎤💞

Just came across your channel looking for information on Juncos and Red Polls. Very nice job!!! I have never had so many juncos and Red Polls as this year. I’ve been feeding them nyger and black oil seeds for a few weeks now. It is getting expensive but thoroughly enjoy their energy and sounds and vibrations they bring to my back yard😀😀😀. I live just south of the Canadian border in Minnesota. Look for ward to their arrival every year! Great channel!!! Keep up the work👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️😀😀😀

This year we have about 50-80 of them daily. This is in North Central Wisconsin. We love watching them completely demolish our no mess seed trays. And yes, we have a lot of other birds. Only 3 years in this house, but for what it's worth, we have not seen a flock like this. First yea we had about 100 song sparrows and for a brief moment we thought they were back haha.

A mixed flock of Pine Siskins and Common Redpolls descended on my yard (south Quebec) mid-February; they are still here. During the Winter I had a couple of small tube feeders, serving fine sunflower chips and Nyjer, hanging under the gazebo on my deck which was adequate for the number of American Goldfinches visiting regularly. Of course, the Siskins immediately took them over and I had to put out additional feeders so that the Goldfinches could get a look in. Initially the Redpolls were mostly out in the yard feeding on the catkins of a large birch tree and the blanket of fallen seeds on the snow. But after a series of freezing rain storms they started to come onto the deck more pecking up what falls from the finch feeders. Occasionally I'll see one on a feeder but the Siskins quickly scare them off. The past week I've also seen them on a Purple Leaved Sand Cherry Tree at the front of the house pecking at the fruit.

This year was the first time I saw Common Redpolls! I had two different sightings here in West Michigan of flocks around 15 feeding on Spruce tree cones in my yard. I love their rosy red colorings, how they hang upsidedown, and their "finchy" calls! It was interesting to learn how large their population is and how far they can travel.

These “Redpolls” have been flocking around my feeders for the past month. They are giving the Goldfinch and Chickadees quite a run for their money in the race to empty my finch feeder. They come in a huge flock and fuss and fight with each other as well as with the other small birds. We do have the House finch here which has a reddish color on the belly and head but the Redpolls are different and definitely travel in large flocks unlike the House Finch. I can always tell when the Redpolls arrive to feed for the day because the noise level increases by quite a bit. They are small but I think that the Chickadees are smaller. We have had a problem with Starlings swamping the feeders lately. I put black oil sunflower seed hearts and peanut slivers in the cylinder feeder for the smaller birds and that is what the Starlings go for. I have a platform feeder for larger birds and that has whole black oil sunflower seeds and shelled peanuts in it. The Starlings want nothing to do with that! They flap their wings and flop around, scaring all the other birds away, and gobble up all of the smaller bird’s food within minutes! I moved the cylinder feeder closer to the house so I could attempt to keep the Starlings away but the nervy things kept coming. As soon as I scare them away the finches and Chickadees come right back until the Starlings decide to come scare them off again. It will be feeder wars until June when the Starlings leave to go steal from the farmers who have planted their crops by then. 🙄
