There are people at my job that can’t even use excel properly or write a coherent paragraph and that stuff is infinitely easier than reffing a fast paced game where so many things can be one way or the other. I stopped being a ref partly due to players/adults making it not fun, I would rather enjoy other things where I’m not called a garbage, no good, simpleton by some fat mom who hasn’t ran in decades. I had one parent approach me to insinuate because I was black I couldn’t understand the game and would favor minority players. And this was before the game even started! Not to mention I was 20 at the time and excited to ref games outside of college intramurals. Some of these people are seriously unhinged and of course if you talk back they’ll file a complaint to the league so you have to just take it.

I have both ref’d and coached and I hate when referees make it about themselves. So someone yells at you. Deal with it because this isn’t about you...it’s about those kids. Quit being a whiny baby and just deal with it.

Referees must ignore fans, if you get inpacted by the fans then you are not suited to be a ref - Referees must be able to get on with the game no matter what the fans say - i've been a ref since i was 15 in floorball not football tho, ive had anything from low league to the highest league in Denmark, and fans are not made to be nice and overall it makes the game a lot more fun when the fans are active and not just sat in silence - Ofcourse i have been called shit, blind, told to do this and that, been getting "advice" from heatet fans, but you and i knew this was and is a part of being a ref - I have only ever stopped one game because of a fan running on the pitch trying to hit my ref partner, never for some idiot yelling at me, that is absurd to do, why ruin the game for the players because of some dumb fan, grow a pair you softie. (Meant for BrooklynRex - I'm just 3 years late) For the players and coaches tho; yellow and red is your friend, just use them - Maybe talk to the players, express you are not happy with the tone on the pitch and tell them to calm down the team if you don't communicate then you are the problem. Yes it is hard to be a referee, i have had playoff finals (Floorball not football) - alot of tough decisions to make, game goes fast and you can expect the ref to not see everything, we are not robots - at the end of the day, im a person too but i dont take my job home and certenly do not feel offended after a games with yelling fans, i focus on what i know i did wrong and what i know i did right everthing else does not matter at all after the game, we make mistakes but being a good ref is owning your mistakes not getting mad at fans for disagreeing with your calls.. This works for me all the time; I make a call > Fans acting up > Makes the player act up > Then i make it clear to the player what he did wrong > Then i go away(Very simple right? Don't even give them a chance to complain otherwise you are just looking for confrontation with players.) Option 1 - Player follows to continue to act up = Yellow Option 2 - Player continue to act up but stays or runs away = Just forget about him, he is mad at himself at the end of the day Option 3 - You have done a good enough job to convince the player and fans that you know what you are doing, but i can tell you lack confidence so you probably seemed insecure and confused

Exactly. Often times, it isn't so much the flak coming from the coaches and parents, it's the fact that the players follow their lead, and the next thing you know the players are chirping endlessly, too. And yes, you're exactly right on your other point as well. The reason you've got these older refs doing U15 and U16 games is because a lot of leagues often have very few younger refs because they got fed up with all the BS of deal with the Sideline Karens and Kens. Frankly, I don't know why these leather-lunged idiots are carrying on like that. I doubt very much if there were any players headed for the National Team, or even a scholarship to a D-1 school. There were no budding young Alex Morgans out there on that field.

Robert, you nailed it. I don't think parents and some coaches understand how much damage they are doing to the sport (what ever it may be) and even their children.

In Europe it don't work like this. The refs just go about their business whatever the fans are yelling. You ignore them and you go on with the game. Simple as that...

Here in Ireland too, referees are getting attacked by spectators after games but the thing about that is that is its actually not in football but in our gaa games eg hurling and gaelic football which are supposed to be shining lights in irish sports but in actual fact they sometimes put sports here in Ireland to shame with how they act at gaa games and they call football aka soccer a thugs game and is really frowned upon here in Ireland, they should really have a look at their own sports and the fans of them before they go criticising football

Absolutely. You don't yell at coaches players parents. You have a whistle and authority of the game. You handle everything with composure good language and be calm to everything you say. Yelling and saying to "shut up" it's not professional and it makes you look bad. Having said that the parents are the worst enemy of their own kids in youth sports as i take it this is probably in USA.

in my asoc. the rule is coach needs 2 b informed of misbehavin spectators. coach is 2 pass along warnin that their team culd suffer consequences. if bad behavior persists, ref can then eject spectators. team can b sanctioned if spectators refuse 2 leave. i last ejected a spectator mebbe 9 yrs. ago. i do hav 2 giv warnings a few times each yr. @@richard6440 Public park, youth sports, booted a parent last night for yelling "bullshit" at a call. They have to leave the viewing area...i.e. if I can see them, they need to keep moving. Again, if it is tolerated, people will persist.

@@richard6440 You must be...because it is quite common. The fields are owned by the city and rented by the leagues. There is zero tolerance for this type of behavior and you can be trespassed if you don't obey the official.

It depends on what your association rules are. Per LOTG, the referee has no direct control over spectators (parents). In Michigan, we are instructed as referees to go through the coaches and have them deal with their parents. If that does not resolve it, the coaches can be removed and/or the game called. This referee's approach is quite consistent with what would be instructed for Michigan referees.

I had a U9 girls match that was vigorously contested and well played by the participants. The parents were out of the control (must have been a full moon). Anyway, I had heard enough - blew my whistle with 'extra force', put my foot on the ball and yelled, "Parents, you can enjoy the game by cheering your team on. However, I will not condone bad behavior and poor sportsmanship directed at these young ladies on upon me. You have a choice, enjoy the game hear or all of you will be dismissed to the far parking lot until the game is concluded." You could have heard a pin drop. I heard one parent ask another, "Can he do that?" The response was, yes he can. After the match several parents apologized for their behavior and all was well.

I worked in Missouri. We were taught that from the moment we arrived at the field to the moment we left, the center referee was in charge of every aspect of it. I once saw a referee at a high school game instruct the visiting coach to move the team bus away from the gate.

In the leage I ref’d (Maryland) you were instructed to NEVER confront a parent. You are supposed to go to the Coach of the team and have them settle the parents down. In my book the Ref did the right thing. All in all tho, parents really suck when it comes to their behavior at sporting events.

@@dmb_13k . thanks mike. i had to ask , as in europe , the vast majority of games are played on public pitches. any school games would be played within the school grounds, during school hours , and parents would not be there. possibly because they are not allowed ' in ' to the school grounds , but probably because the game would be played as a normal class, if that makes sense? after lunch , history, geography and football :) so parents wouldnt turn up until after the game is over. so to even see parents at a school game is a bit weird for me. if the game was played on a public pitch ( usually on a sunday morning ) the ref couldnt do anything if spectators were shouting , unless it was threats. thanks for replying though mike :)

Full disclosure: I was the guy taking this video. I think the answer to your question is that in baseball and softball there is very little and infrequent player-to-player contact, which is what riles the player parents. Also, in baseball and softball, most of the spectator player parents are either asleep or looking at their phones during play.

Yes sir. Depending on the skill level and age of the player as well as stage of the game (tournament championship game or is it a youth rec game). And officials for U12 make $35 a game, U19 make $45-65.

And how many games do you estimate that referee had been a part of that day? How many games can you referee in a day? idk. maybe this is the only one, maybe this is the 5th

There’s a difference between having a thick skin and taking shit none stop most often by ignorant parents. The loudest and most vile parents tend to be the most ignorant parents. And saying the refs have to get thicker skin is a joke. There is an officiating shortage across the nation and world because of this crap. Official abuse is not okay and should not be normalized. Officials are literally being assaulted and murdered in the world.

"Laws of the Game", which are the "official" rules of soccer, do not give referees direct authority over spectators. So local league/tournament rules dictate what is appropriate. Often these local "rules of competition" will specifically give enforcement of spectators to the coaches; if coaches don't control their spectators, the coaches can be ejected and/or the game called.

Most youth sports have rules about behavior. They say coaches are responsible for their team and their teams parents. Most of the time the refs just eject the asshole parents and play continues in a much calmer environment. Other times the coaches are warned, as a way of keeping everyone in the game also as a way of penalizing the offending team by potentially ejected a coach as well as the parents.

Yeah - as a ref, I hate it. I don’t want to take away a bunch of playing time to get a coach to waddle across the field to tell his parents to shut up. I did toss out two parents once. They were on the verge of getting into a fight, and I figured they might as well settle it in the parking lot. (AFAIK, they calmed down on their way out.)

Agreed--that is the one correction I would make--"shut up" isn't necessary. But it's 10 minutes in and we're already hearing parents yelling "call it both ways" and jumping on the referee--I suspect he was a bit fed up. Doesn't excuse the "shut up", but I'll give him a break....

I am an official myself...you turd. An official has to have thick skin or you are in the wrong business. If they can't find soccer people that want to be soccer official...that's a different subject. Try going to any officials camp and come back and talk to me. You will find...you are the biggest idiot. You don't know crap. parents are always going to think their kid is great and you can't call worth a crap. They are parents that's what they do. You tune it out unless there is some profane language being used. So, magic or not. I could care less who calls a soccer game or any other game. As long it is called right...

Growing up. That's a laugh. I have been an official for over 20 years in multiple sports all the way up to college. Go to a camp and then talk. Until then, you have nothing to say because you have no earthly idea what you are talking about.

I don't know why you keep talking about "Camp". At my level we got to National Referee Clinics, not camps. We're not 8th graders.

Yes Bobby and Michigan is seeing fewer & fewer officials. 1500 start & quit each year. Yet clubs keep recruiting players and adding teams. You SHOULD lace up your sneaks and get to work.
