In today's edition of Ref Watch, Dermot Gallagher spoke about the disallowed Luis Diaz goal which happened during Liverpool's 2-1 loss to Tottenham Hotspur.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp had already slammed "the most unfair circumstances, crazy decisions," before referee body PGMOL officially apologised for Luis Diaz's first-half strike being disallowed for offside.
It was later revealed VAR mistakenly believed that the on-field decision had been to award the goal. This resulted in VAR Darren England, despite realising that Diaz was onside, relaying a message of 'check complete' and the goal being ruled out.

Well there's a problem in that football fans may have assumed that VAR will never make mistakes. Overall does VAR correct more errors than it causes? Probably yes. But as a rugby league fan, we've had video refs for 25 years and they still make the odd terrible decision. Cricket fans have had third umpires for slightly longer and they still get it wrong sometimes. VAR will continue to make blunders for as long as humans are involved, that's just part of the equation unfortunately.

Look at the VAR graphic at 0:47 seconds into this video - the VAR graphic is literally stating that they are "Checking Disallowed Goal - Offside". Dermot immediately repeats the BS that the VAR crew mistakenly thought the on-field decision was Goal given. This explanation from PGMOL was manufactured in the rear-end of a horse.

How can 4 people not then notice that once they said check complete there was no celebration from Liverpool players and how can 4 people not notice that the players then set up formation for a free kick an not a kick off. One question remains unanswered. How the officials didn’t know the goal was disallowed? Multiple officials too. When everyone else did. Were they not watching the match? Were they not looking at the screens that informed everyone that the linesman raised his flag and that the goal had been disallowed? Calling it a human error doesn’t account for this. They were obviously doing something else at the same time but don’t want to say what.

Reaffirm a process!!! We cannot be serious here, 4/5 seasons in they suddenly 'forget' the process. 2 seasons back, at Spurs, Kane not sent off, no VAR check, Jota just taken out by Royale, no penalty, Robertson checked in the same game, sent off (rightly) Liverpool lost that title by 1 point, City gifted none penalty against Burnley, Rodri not given against Everton etc. There is a myth that these things even themselves up....they don't!

Excellent solution Steve. Rules that are written are sometimes meant to be broken. It has happened throughout history so why not change it for the moment. Dermot says the referee has no power, then why have a referee in a game. The integrity of the VAR has been challenged.
@wb2463
@wb2463 8 месяцев назад
Surely what they're skipping over here is that after VAR said "check complete" thinking a goal had been given BOTH VAR officials presumably sat there watching Tottenham set up for a free kick (so this is BEFORE play has restarted) and never once thought to say "hang on a minute, they setting up a free kick not a kick-off, we've obviously got this wrong, let's tell the ref while there's still time." THAT'S what really boggles my mind; not only did two VAR officials somehow miss the linesman's flag being up and the massive screen saying "checking disallowed goal" and the mic'd up lineman saying "offside!" and the Liverpool players not celebrating, but after all that they also completely missed the fact that the game was restarting from a free kick. Seriously, I could understand one person missing one of those things, but two people missing five obvious things?! They'd genuinely have to be either asleep or watching the rugby World cup instead. It's absolutely outrageous and we HAVE to be given the full audio from the incident so we can see what was really going on.

@@pbocking44 Exactly. I mean this is complete common sense. It doesn't have be in the rule of the book. It is our very own conscience which superceeds rules and laws. Even the VAR referee could have communicated with the onfield referee, request him to stop the play, call both managers and captains and explain that there was an error in the decision and should award Liverpool the goal. The outcome would have been absolutely different. I understand errors in judgment in the case of a foul where it is based on interpretations. But decisions on offsides are absolute and this is why I can't accept an apology. Moreover, it is known that the two VAR referees had officiated a match in UAE 48 hours prior to this match. An indepth and stern investigation must be done to make this error the last and final. No other team must suffer how Liverpool did.

@Hedgie-zq4wf
@Hedgie-zq4wf 8 месяцев назад
Let's have this right Dermot....there was more than just 1 offside mistake in this game. How about the freeze frame for Hooper to look at, set up for him by VAR? Why not show him the full footage as I understand they are supposed to? What about the incident with Gomez and Van de Ven where upon replay it looked a penalty or at least merited a decent look at it....not the mere seconds it took to rule it out as a penalty by the same VAR officials. Lastly....couldnt the ref just have had a word with Jota instead of a 2nd yellow? He didnt connect with the player and neither was it reckless. This game was rigged against Liverpool and anyone watching that sickening nonsense on Saturday would agree. LFC are spot on with their statement, someone needs to take a stand against the Ref's Mafia & FA and get this sorted out once and for all. Dermot is just a mouthpiece for the same mafia....i had no respect for him as a ref and i have even less respect for him as the analyst of Ref's....he more often that not sides with the Officials. I think one obvious step that needs to be taken is enforcing an updated set of language that officials use when discussing VAR decisions over their comms, similar to what airlines or the military do so that there's absolutely no confusion. For example, instead of the VAR official just saying "check complete", they should say something like "check complete, it's onside". Then the head official on the pitch should be required to confirm at least once more by asking "confirm again, you're saying it's onside?" "Confirm, the player was onside" (or something like that). This should be done multiple times. Airlines have had to completely update the language and phrases they use in the past, because you'd be surprised how many planes have crashed simply from poor communication and vague language that lead to misunderstandings. Eliminate the use of any vague language whatsoever and enforce multiple checks for confirmation before play can continue.

Dermot has always supported his buddies. He said its a mistake but how can it be a mistake with VAR. This is exactly why VAR was introduce to stop these mistakes. If the VAR officials had even look at it properly and even without VAR, everyone in the stadium or at home watching TV, instantly could see it was not offside. In fact, luis was a metre onside. Thats why there is something very sinister from the VAR officials. In the earlier match when City lost, i had anticipated something like this will happen. I think the real issue here is the systematic error. If there's nothing to prevent a misinterpretation of the on field call and the cut-off is the start of play, a really simple solution would be to confirm the decision at any stage before that. Example: confirm the player was offside? No? Confirm goal? Oh wow, that could have gotten ugly! Has to be a confirmed goal or offside rather than "no goal" or "onside" as that could get confusing.

This was a communications breakdown caused by a momentary mistaken belief that the goal had been given on the pitch. This couldn't then be corrected because the game restarted 2 seconds later. There is no suggestion of corruption. Liverpool can claim 'sporting integrity' is at stake because they scored a clearly legitimate goal and goals change games, but not professional integrity. Would Liverpool prefer they didn't acknowledge the mistake, not apologise and not investigate? (1) Incorrectly offside. (2) 1st yellow card on Jota. (3) Ref trip to UAE prior to the game, where is Man City owner from??? (4) Freezing screen VAR on Jones. (5) Incorrectly given corner kick when the last touch made by Tottenham player.. I'm still trying to digest on how those incidents can just be called "Human error". Those ref are corrupt on my view. PL has lost it's credibility.

But this has been going on in several matches this season….this can’t be just human error….mistakes done more then twice it tends out be a habit….. Forego VAR and we get entertaining football again like in the and early and mid 2000s

If it was a genuine mistake, why didn’t the refs announce over the tannoys that there’s been a mistake, and they were giving liverpool a legitimate goal? Why didn’t the ref at half time speak to both teams…. And ask Tottenham to just let liverpool walk the ball in at the start of the second half? Why was utd allowed a penalty after the game was finished….. if they aren’t allowed interference after the whistle has been blown! I’m sorry lol, but logic points to corruption….. 🤷‍♂️

I think the referee can adjust the score after play has restarted in this situation. This is because they are correcting a mis-communication. Not reviewing a former incident. It all boils down to what constitutes a 'review'

@@MrPmwas then why did they let the play restart from a free kick? They must have known that it should/would be a goal kick if the goal had been given. Stinks as bad as old trashford!

@@kylegill4932 the ref on the field has no blame here.. it's the VAR officials who made the error . They should have raised the alarm immediately and they saw play is being restarted from a free kick and not the halfway line.

They forgot the most crucial fact that this is one of the tougher opponent and it's an AWAY game for Liverpool. To clinch that draw or win is crucial. I dare to say this, if this game is being replayed, SPURS fans will never dare to accept a replay because they know full well what the outcome will be.

The angle used for the VAR cameras also is a big issue, sure to have cameras "running sideways " not fixed at one single point (diagonal)
