If you have any questions or messages, please feel free to comment.
I have repaired a Gibson Les Paul Studio.
We did refinishing, side scalloping, fret polishing, and overall adjustment.
The most difficult part was the refinishing. This refinish was neither lacquer nor polyurethane.
It is shellac paint, which does not use a spray gun or compressor.
We painted with French polish, which is one of the most time-consuming and labor-intensive methods.
However, to be precise, it is not a French polish finish paint, but a simple polished and polished? French polish.
At the work meeting stage, we were planning to polish only the top, and to use a thin shellac on the body back and other parts of the body, and finish with French polish.
During the process, we discussed with the customer and chose to polish.
You can see in the video how it is finished with French polish in the middle of the process. Polishing after finishing with French polish.
French polish is very difficult from the point of view of those who have experience in lacquer painting.
It looks like you are just twirling the pad while applying the polish, but to get a mirror finish, you need to know the density of the shellac, the amount of oil, the material of the pad, the drying time, and the repetition of polishing while applying the polish. In total, about 300 coats are applied, 6 hours a day for a week.
I dreamed that I was doing French polish, but in a failed state.
Flat boards and furniture without bumps are very easy to apply.
To be honest, I don't recommend applying shellac to anything other than body tops. The labor and cost are out of proportion.
However, I was fascinated by the unique film of Shellac French Polish.
I think it is because it is not a spray, so surface tension does not work, but the paint surface looks like it is stuck to the wooden surface of the body.
When I shine it in the light, guffaw! Gwah! Gwah! The paint film is called "Paint Film". It's hard to describe with a camera, so I'm not sure if it comes across...
I think this is the kind of surface that can be achieved because of the shellac French polish on the arch top. I think the price is high, but it is worth it.
When I see the finished product, I think I would like to do it again.
I will regret why I took such a request when I start working on it....
The highlight of this video is that I used masking tape instead of a scraper to express the binding in the staining of the body top material.
Perhaps.
Thank you for your request.

@Andybassguitar
@Andybassguitar 2 года назад
@@ericskinner7355 The entire process takes about three months.
@ericskinner7355
@ericskinner7355 2 года назад
@@Andybassguitar that is quite a commitment. I understand all the prep, sanding etc. Then there's the waiting for finnishes to cure enough to be top coated and polished. If that part gets rushed things can go really bad. Was curious about actual hrs spent on that guitar. Did you keep track of actual time spent in that three months?
@Andybassguitar
@Andybassguitar 2 года назад
@@ericskinner7355 The work time was not fully documented. It took about 3 months from the time the customer sent me the guitar to the completion of the project. The waiting time for drying would be about 2-3 weeks overall. In the case of shellac, etc., the longer the drying wait, the better. During the French polish process, I worked 6 hours a day for about 2 weeks.

I know how difficult and time consuming this can be. I have myself French polished several instruments, including an old vintage Strat (pitch black shellac) that had been previously stripped. Great job!! Contrary to common belief, shellac is extremely resistant and tough, yet extremely thin when applied properly.

It's a preference, but if it were me, I would make the escutcheon out of the same rose wood as the fretboard.
@Wargasm54
@Wargasm54 2 года назад
I like the black. Makes it pop. Cream always tends to blend in and make things look dull. I know it’s a classic look. But I prefer black plastics or stark white. I have a red Les Paul with stark white binding and I put stark white plastics on it. Looks killer. All my other Les Paul’s have black plastics. I prefer contrast. But like he said. It’s a preference. 😜

Very nice work! Great to see in such detail. I have French polished several cheap guitars, essentially making silk purses of sow’s ears; all were bolt-ons. The best result, though not without flaws (unlike your work) was refinishing a small Teisco body and a great neck (really straight, even with fat frets!) in black lacquer over black Mohawk primer. The result is beautiful, especially on the neck. I think my problems arise from getting carried away with the lacquering process which is so sensually satisfying I get lost in it, and over-applied lacquer for a too-thick result. Too thick finish results in more flaws and problems. French polish is a very forgiving finish technique, errors literally rub out in the next application. The feel of the finish is most rewarding, even more than the look. It’s like my little black guitar is a thick hunk of hard leather or a large black beetle. The lacquer is tough, takes a shine really well s much nicer than any plastic paint or even nitrocellulose spray lacquer finish. I think it’s stronger than the latter.

I actually French polished a custom cut wooden scratchplate. Rationale was not necessarily that it would look great, but that scratches and dings could be polished out again easily as a renewable process. Very time consuming and didn't look anywhere near as good as this beautiful piece (didn't need to - it's a player so would get messed up from playing anyway) but I think it's a viable option still. That said, I spent months French polishing a bookcase once. I find it quite relaxing.
