Saran Wrap or Cling Wrap can be used on the inside of the socket to prevent damaging the bolts finish.
An electric or pneumatic ratchet will speed up the process of hand tightening the bolts.

@Tom Eggleton, I can't reply to your comment for some reason. But to answer your question, this was just a project I wanted to do so I imported the wheels from Japan, refinished them and then sold them :)

how much did this cost and how long was the process? Is this what you did to make money? lol

The actual wheels were somewhere around $375 and then with shipping from Japan to the US the total for the wheels before refinishing was $800. The sand blasting and powder coating for the centers was $200. The rest of the material and tools that I bought was another $200. Shipping took about a month and half if I remember correctly and that was from Nengun. Then refinishing the wheels from disassembly to assembly took 40+ hours. In the end I sold the wheels for $1300 so $100 profit for over 40 hours of work so not really a money maker haha just a project I wanted to do.

mike Used wheels from japan are cheap haha. Sold for $1300 cause they were 5 lug and 16". So it would have sold for more had it been 4 lug or a bigger size wheel.

For BBS RS001, per BBS...if your using original BBS steel bolts the torque spec is 220 inch pounds ( 18.3333 foot pounds) ,note bbs always uses “inch pounds “ a lot of reference to foot pounds which may be to much in these videos.... however a lot of good useful info as well. Nice job. Also if your using GE silicone you should let it set for 24 hours then do a second application and if you want a third but lighter amount, before you mount the tires back. Also place tape on either side of silicone area to help control the mess then remove when cured ( if you ever need to separate again.

forgot to update! The reseal went perfect! Thanks for the video, it really helped a lot towards the reseal! Next up is the winter polishing project. Going to pickup everything listed in your polishing lips video! Any advice would help! thanks again

It may be more difficult, but torque should be applied to the nut and not the bolt. If you cannot torque the nut and are forced to torque the bolt instead, adjust the torque wrench 10% higher than the mfg.'s recommended torque value.

One question for you though, the BBS centre caps - do you know any place I can get them for a reasonable price given that they're just 4 pieces of plastic with a logo on them?

Honestly the first thing I would do is contact compomotive and see if they can give you a set of their original bolts. However if that doesn't work out, I would recommend you do some basic measurements of your bolts then go to tunershop . com click on "Wheel Accessories" then click on "Rim Screws" and they should have a bolt that would work with compomotive wheels and you can use your measurements to confirm it. Hope that helps,

Thanks for the quick reply! I'm actually real intrigued about doing the work myself. I watched all 3 of your videos and the ones on CCWs website. Seriously, gotta give proper thanks to you and other people for making DIY videos. But yea I would like to have a permanent fix and not deal with this problem again. Great vid. Would it be roughly the same process for 2 piece RM's? I noticed the bolts on my RM's are fully threaded and shorter, so no nuts used. Just had lots of silicone.

Thanks,although the manufacturer of my 3pc wheels (which are front mounted) said that I need to also put sealant between the lip and the center... Should I just seal the barrel and lip together and immediately put the center and tighten the bolts before the silicone dries?

I've previously won some RH ZW1's and will be rebuilding them with new outer lips and gold bolts and your video has helped me learn how to do so but you lots me at the torque, do you have any advise you can give me to understand me

I have a set of futura's that I'm about ready to mount. For reverse mounting do I just do a bead of silicon on the barrel contacting the lip or do I also need one on the face contacting the back of the barrel?

No worries. Sure, ok, unfortunately I am over the pond in London and the GE5000 you suggest I am unable to get here, I would be using Tigerseal, if you've any experience? Is there a way to test for leaks before mounting a tyre?

Well because your lips are new they should be true and perfectly balanced so you can go ahead and mount up your new lips without any specific alignment and there shouldn't be any issue. :) Nice wheels btw!

Hello, I have a few questions. How much of torque need in Nm? About 15-20 Nm if bolts are old OEM ones? I read this info in bimmer forums about BBS RM/RS build and torque of bolts. Are there any difference of torqueing bolts or nuts? Are torqueing balts or nuts change scale of Nm? Thanks for answers! :)

Hey, it's very nice that you still answer the questions after 4 years... The thing is I'm watching it for the second time, it's one of the best tutorials thats why haha. But I can't find the video where you prepared the centre to that perfection, am I missing a viedo, or did you do nothing? Thanks! My wheels came with the ventiles so I didn't buy them. If you want ventiles though you can get them from blackforestindustries . com or tunershop . com or eBay if you don't like the other two websites. Hope that helps,

Hey, excellent video. thanks for doing it. I'm going to do the same with my old OZ Pegasus wheels and was wondering if I could clearcoat the lips after they are polished up? would there be some kind of problem with that?

+nihontoman You can clear coat them but some say it's hard for a clear coat to stick to them since they are polished and on top of that they lose some of their shine when you do it.

Just a question i noticed toy said every lip matches the center and barrel in a specific position... I have bought some S1 Work meisters that have been damaged so i am buying new lips for them pluss making a custom assembly where my fronts are gona get a bigger lip and my rear will get a bigger lip.... my question is since all my lips are now foreign to the wheels what is the best way of alignment to keep minimal balancing issues after... cheers

First thing I would try is to either call or e-mail Artec and see if you can buy some oem bolts from them. Don't be afraid to contact them either, it won't hurt and you could get oem bolts from them which would be the best option overall. But if that doesn't work out you can go to tunershop.com, once you get to their home page select "Wheel Accesories" on the left hand side, followed by clicking "Rim Screws" and this should bring you to the page with a good chunk of choices for wheel bolts. You can measure your bolts and see if they have something similar to yours on their site. Other than that website though I wouldn't be able to tell you where to get them. Hope that helps :)

Hi I have a question I have some Rotiform BWE and I want to powder coat just the face can I just take out the face with out split a part the barrels ?

+DEEJAYLEGO Look at how they are mounted. I can't tell from the pictures of the BWE's but the face may be sandwiched between the lip and barrel in which case you would need to split it. However if it's not sandwiched in between then you won't have to split them apart.

My only suggestion would be to clean the surface off with alcohol or another cleaner and then just apply silicone on the area in order to create a seal. Other than that, it would require taking apart. Hope that helps :)

how long did it take you to refinish the 4 wheels? I have some bbs rs90's style 5s 2 piece that need to be refinished.

Because I was taking my time, and using sanding blocks rather than sandpaper, the approximate time that the whole process took, including disassembly and assembly, was about 40 hours which comes out to about 4 days of work if you work about 10 or so hours a day. Now if your wheels are in better condition than mine were, or if your going to use new bolts, and you use sandpaper rather than sanding blocks, the process should be much quicker. But still not bad considering it can be done in two weekends time. Hope that helps :)

***** awesome to hear man. It's winter here in Canada so it's about -30 and I have no where to use the paint thinner. Im thinking to start the wheels in april when it's a little warmer. I'm going to do the "right" way with all the grits of sandpaper and what not. I'm just a little worried about the bolts on the back, mine seem to be really dirty and some seem a little rusty. How can I take the bolts off without snapping or stripping them?

Yea try using one of the wire wheels with a dremel. They have like a plastic type of wire wheel and you could just go around all the bolts with that to get them clean. Hope that helps,

Last step... use pure carnauba wax to stop the bare metal going dull and to give a deep gloss to the lips.

Balance is done after the tire is mounted. Also fun fact, I spoke with the head designer of HRE at SEMA for over half an hour and he told me how much of a joke of a wheel company Rotiform is with their lack of engineering and design hahaha. Anyways you brought back good memories, but yeah I don't balance a wheel without a tire and when drifting the wheels never get balanced regardless.

Many tire shops don't even want to mount a tire because the wheel is not balanced at all, but yeah i guess is up to the owner or company, good you spoke to him for over half an hour (wow)

Thougt everyone balanced the wheels after the tiers was mounted. Its not sure that the tiers are compleatly round/balanced either. Therefor I think ist better to just balance the wheel with the tiers on so you don't have to do the job twice
