So in this video I show you how to polish the lip on your three piece wheel. This technique can be used on essentially all aluminum surfaces though, including the centers of your wheel, or any aluminum part on your car that you would want polished :)
For the sanding, you can't cheat by using an electric sander, you need to have a nice grain and an electric sander is not going to cut it.
For the polishing, you need something with a high rpm as well as a nice amount of torque, hence the angle grinder. A drill will not put out as much rpm nor will it have enough torque and strength to keep going for hours on end.
And as for the main steps in the process:
Strip to bare metal
Wet sand with either medium and fine sanding blocks or 220,320,420,600,800,1000,1500,2000 grit wet sandpaper
Use the denim buffing wheel with the brown Tripoli compound, do two runs, wipe clean with acetone/paint thinner
Use the cotton sewn wheel with the white rouge compound, do two runs, wipe clean with acetone/paint thinner
Buff out your awesomeness using Mother's Mag and Aluminum Polish

All I did was widen the hole of the buffing wheel with an X-Acto / hobby knife, by cutting some of the material, until it was wide enough to the point where I could thread the wheel onto the grinder. It's takes about 10 minutes to do and makes for a cost effective setup.

Oh ok I understand now. I'm restoring 3pc O.Z.'s and i've been using this guide so thanks for all your help. I'm about halfway done with sanding the set and about to move on to fine grit. Also I used the spray can version of the stripper, its fast but after the 3rd-4th use it doesn't spray so well, even with the can still half full so ironically I think the brush on type is faster at the end of the day. Thanks again for all the knowledge.

Thank you for the response. I've already tried the products his showed on the video a while back ago and had no luck. It actually ended up making my chrome more dual and scratched(due to the steel wool) even though it was the finest grade(#0000).

ok gotcha, I think they actually make an adapter for it so that is why I asked. If I find one I'll be sure to post it on here just to make everyones life easier. but great vid man, just looked at your other vid (polishing bolts) and I thought it was great. Going to start on my wheels this weekend!

Sure will, I am not working on BBS but I'm doing ARE 398's that I bought for $138! They look about the same as BBS, and are super rare.

First off, nice video! I really want to polish my wheel now, but I need to know what grit the medium and fine sandingblocks are, because I can't find them here in the Netherlands. I don't want to go the hard way by sanding them with regular sandpaper.

VRWheels is pretty much THE place to go for rebuilding wheels. You can look them up online. They are located in California but I'm certain you can ship to them and have them re-sealed. Hope that helps,

i couldn't find aircraft stripper so i used circa 1850 heavy duty paint and varnish remover. i already sanded the oxidation and some clear coat with 400 grit wed sand. now the oxidation is gone. can i still use the paint stripper to remove the clear coat? or should i continue sanding with 800-1000-1500-2000 grit sand paper? thanks

i didn't use the stripper yet. i sanded the lip with 400 grit until most of the blemishes came off. should i still use the paint stripper to completely remove the clear coat? right now the lip is dull.

I have OZ lips to polish, the problem is I cant get rid of the pitting. Stripped the clear then moved onto sanding with 120 grit, been at it for a good 4 hours and still cant see the end..some of the pitting is so bad i can still feel it with my fingers after all this sanding. Any tips or is it just more of this crazy sanding?

I think it would be a lot easier mounting the wheel on the car standing on stands and put it in gear at idle so the wheel spins for you

I picked up some Blitz 01's and the finish is foggy - they don't have any oxidation. What would you recommend I do; just polish with an angle grinder? fine wet sand and then polish?

If the finish is just foggy try polishing them with Mag and Aluminum polish. If that doesn't help then polish using an angle grinder and so on. And then if that doesn't work then you would need to sand and do the whole process.Oh also make sure it has a bare metal finish and isn't clear coated. You can tell when you use the Mag and Aluminum polish and if the cloth your using turns black when polishing then it's bare metal, if not then it's coated with something.

***** Thanks for the timely reply! I'll do that and see if I need paint stripper to do the whole process. One question: after everything, why didn't you re-clear coat the rims? I'm positive these Blitz are alloy but I want to preserve the polish after all that work

No problem :) Clear coating wheels often takes away the shine that raw polished parts have. On top of that because it's a coating going on top of the lip it'll eventually wear away or fade and now your back to taking the wheels apart again to redo the polishing process. Also since the part is polished you can have questionable results in getting the clear coat to properly adhere to the surface because it's so smooth. So basically there's less room for error without coating and you get a better shine.

I haven't done faces before so maybe you could get away with it if the faces weren't really scuffed up. You can always try doing one face and if it works then great and if not, you haven't spent much time and can do it by sanding. Hope that helps,

Do you ever re-clearcoat the lips? I have a set of enkei e92s that obviously aren't 3 piece but have polished lips. They aren't horrible but oxidized more than is acceptable. Centers are painted or coated gold. What would you recommend I do?...Besides get some 3 piece wheels. :) Thanks

Nope re-clearcoating would just paint over the oxidation on the lips so it wouldn't help make them nice again. And if you strip and then polish your lips like in this series, clear coating the lips after the polish gets iffy. Because the clear coat takes away from the shine and on top of that you then have to worry about the clear coat peeling or getting faded. So really the best way imo, is to strip the lip, polish it, and then keep it raw and use some Mag and Aluminum polish every so often to keep the lips polished :)

Word. I didn't mean just to clear over the oxidation. I meant when you're done with the polishing. Nice work man. The only thing worry about with stripping the polish off is where the clear meets the paint on the glod face. Hard to tell if the cleared over that too ya know.

For the buffing wheels I just put them on the shaft on the grinder just as you would put on a cut off wheel. Yea I removed the grinder guard so the wheels would fit.

Chris P Went driving, let the car sit, then went driving again, and when I came back I noticed there was a puddle of trans fluid on the ground where I had let the car sit haha. So I basically just redid all the seals and cleaned everything up. Yea i'm a member on Zilvia. I really don't post anything though because you can google almost everything about a 240. Also for some reason I'm not really into being active on forums anymore, idk why though, I guess it just got tiring.

Because some have claimed that when reassembling the wheels all the lips, centers, and barrels should match the wheel that they originally came apart from. This is because, again some have have claimed, that the wheels may be tweaked a little in a certain way because of how long they've been together. So to prevent imbalance when reassembling different lips to different centers etc. they recommend doing all the same lips, centers, and barrels as they originally were. But will it actually affect it that much or even at all? Probably not haha

I already answered this in a previous comment. That drain was clogged and completely filled with about 4 ft of soil and roots with a little plant growing from it. In fact the drain would overfill in about 30 seconds to a minute of turning the water on. And if you know about environmental science, with that soil and plant being there, the chemicals were trapped either by the plant or by the soil and never reached the street/local water sources. Thanks for the comment though.

Artin Ohanian please explain what I said aside from my lack of knowledge that the drain was clogged is inaccurate. Even so, those chemicals will still seep down into the groundwater aquifer. Please educate yourself before spewing your ignorance to others.
