My psychology undergraduate degree did cover anxiety, depression, PTSD and schizophrenia. It was within a module called ‘abnormal psychology’, in the third year.

@ciobalina7445
@ciobalina7445 Месяц назад
@@isal3605 It's interesting to read about it, but not to actually deal with people who are sick with these mental disorders. Psychology students don't really want to work with those who actually are sick and they learn no skills for that. It took me 3 therapists in 5 years for one to actually refer me to a psychiatrist for suspicion of OCD, which I was actually diagnosed with. I feel like these people learn nothing at those universities at psychology, absolutely nothing relevant for those who actually need mental treatment. It's like all they want to do is talk about feelings, as if this actually solves something. I don't like therapists anymore, most just seem superficial and like they want to do psychoterapy because they don't want to do a real job, like actually work.
@cameron9206
@cameron9206 3 дня назад
@@ciobalina7445 uh. Not all therapists are like that and I’ve had crap ones. I’m a psych student with autism, adhd and bipolar 1. I enjoy every part of learning it just makes things make so much more sense. So don’t say it’s not “real work” just cuz of your bad experiences. It’s disrespectful to those of us that actually care and are “sick” as you put it.

Excellent video! I'm also a psychology student and agree with most of the things you've said. I also noticed that lot's of people go into psych, thinking they'll get to know themselves better, then being heavily disappointed because suddenly they're studying the anatomy of an ear or eye :p I went into psych with the aspiration to go into the clinical field, on the contary to you though, neuroscience is what I fell in love with, and thus chose to start a Theoretical & Experimental psychology MSc. with a focus on (cognitive) neuroscience. That's also the only thing I disagree on: specialising in neuroscience through a psychology degree doesn't make you 'less good' at neuroscience than neuroscience majors. Cognitive neuroscience is an inherently interdisciplinary field combining bio & psych, researcher's might have a different emphasis in their education but ultimately both frameworks are required in the lab :)
@FrancisMadden
@FrancisMadden 2 года назад
Thank you and I really appreciate you sharing your thoughts! I know I was always a little biased away from neuro bc I didn't do biology at A Level. Glad to hear that the value of neuro in a psych degree stacks up against a 100% neuroscience degree though, it sounds like from your experience you certainly know better than me on that front!🧠
@whyisgamora4191
@whyisgamora4191 2 года назад
@@FrancisMadden Of course! Maybe I should clarify though, your statement *does* hold true if we're talking abt purely biological research. Like cures for diseases like Parkinson through protein & gentechnology, that's not something you learn in psych. Cognitive neuroscience is where we're at 😊

I watched this video after having my doubts about psychology, but now I'm basically sold! Honestly, I was afraid that it would be like it is portrayed in the media. Scanners, labs, colorful brains on screens... That's what I'm not interested in. However all of the questions (except the neurological biology part, I admit) were extremely interesting to me! I'm seriously considering applying to the Cambridge course.

Hi, psych graduate from Uni of Manchester - so funny you’ve said no CBT - I was SICK to death of it by the end of my degree. It was the backbone of clinical psych years 1 & 2 for us. I preferred ACT, really connected with it and found it useful in my daily life. Doesn’t help that CBT is so well-known in mainstream society now too, so it’s all you hear about. Good luck with whatever you decided to choose!
@FrancisMadden
@FrancisMadden 2 года назад
Ah that's so interesting! ACT seems amazing from what little I've read of it, I'm glad to hear it's resonated with you. I've signed up for a fuckton of CBT now on the clinical psychology doctorate so all good😎

I think a lot of people think studying psychology will dramatically improve your social/emotional intelligence, but that is a skill you can only develop by being out there in the world. Business people often understand psychology better than most psychologists in my experience, at least in a practical sense.

Really interesting video! Also from Manny, at uni in London, and had an ex who went to Cam so spent a few years there but never met a single psychologist - do they all hide away like the mathematicians? I switched from Econ to Psych and am in my final year of an Organisational Psychology pathway now. I found the behavioural side of econ far too interesting and realised psych was definitely for me, so for anyone worried about not being able to start another degree - don't. Took me a few years after starting one to realise what was right for me, and everyone's (at least in the UK) hit with the life-tax of student finance repayments anyway. May as well get a degree in something you enjoy and take the debt in your stride! Hilarious to see the course similarities - we had an entire first term cognitive module on vision, and the second term I spent wrapping my head around syntax and c-commanding - but the 'cambridge difference' is clear in the depth of the questions. Wouldn't really even know how to begin talking about the gamete donation kids question 🥴

I was aware that I would not be able to become better just by studying psychology early. So I just worked on myself and will go into Psychology as a (truly) mature student haha...funny how younger people will be my seniors soon oh gosh haha and the choice is between becoming a psychiatrist after 5-6 years od med+2-3 years of residency then 3 years of core and then 3 years of specialisation. SO it's about 12-13 years (maybe longer)...so you saved 3 years hahaha.. had the same concerns...do I want to be a psychiatrist? Or psychologist? so i keep reminding why psychology is better for me so thanks. this was really great to get rid of any of those doubts :D

The peak thing about psychiatric treatment is also that you can treat someone, make a massive difference to their lives, then they come back to you at square one 6 weeks later :(((

You shoulda gotten a bachelors in arts if you wanted to learn about yourself. I feel like you’ve misled so many ppl with this as this is the bachelors of science field with neuroscience. It’s annoying at best. And the topics you say are boring and could be shortened just shows how you shouldn’t be work in this field…
