thanks for watching ✨ Thank you to The Line for sponsoring this video and making THE BEST budgeting tools! Everything is linked below ❤️
In this video, we are going over the 9 personal finance goals I set for myself at the beginning of 2023. I think it is so important to reflect on our achievements (and potentially our flops) before setting new goals for New Years 2024. We talk about my $13,000 debt repayment, my saving and investing strategies, lifestyle creep, how much I earned this year, and much more! I hope you enjoy!

✨ About me: ✨
Hi, I’m Zoe! (Pronounced like Zoey) I’m a 27 year old from Montreal making videos about my REAL life. After quitting my management consulting "dream job", then being laid off from a startup job, I decided to take a chance and work for myself. I'm now mainly focused on RU-vid (my absolute passion) and side-hustle contracts in the copywriting and admin fields.
My videos centre around work, gentle productivity, mental health & personal wellness, with a touch of fashion, tech, and whatever else I'm living. My goal is to be open & honest ALWAYS and for my channel to be a fun, inspiring place where we can set goals and live our best lives together. I would love for you to subscribe 💝

My 2023 goal was to save $10,000. I exceeded that and saved $13,000. My main goal for the new year is to improve my skills to land a higher paying job. That’s all I want in 2024. A job that pays more.

One of my (rather insane) goals in 2023 was to save 1M PHP (roughly $18k), which is a lot of money considering where I'm from. At the time, I was working two full-time jobs and I was going crazy! Halfway through the year, I quit one of my jobs and essentially cut my income by half; but increased my quality of life ten-fold. Now, almost at the end of 2023, I am likely to only hit 10% of my initial goal, but that's okay with me. I went on two international trips this year and I had the time of my life!! I'm looking forward to 2024 to finally have better control over my finances.

Each month in my checking account I designate $100 as a line item called "checking buffer". All of my money has a job. That $100's job is to add to our buffer in our checking account beyond our bills, investing and savings. I love having an extra bunch of money in there for the peace of mind aspect. We are carrying over $1000 into our 2024 budget. That will continue to grow in there, however, if we need that extra margin we have it.. It's nice. Also, the fact that your government is not allowing you to save for the home fund bc you live with someone, seems really unfair. I'm sorry they did that to you. Great video. Very inspiring. Congrats on crushing those goals, girl!

Getting two months ahead helped me a lot. So December's income pays for February's bills. This works well when you don't get paid consistently.

Where do you keep the money if you don’t mind me asking? ☺️
@thehomeless_trucker

@@maloumasereel966 I keep it simple and keep it in my checking account. But common advice is a high yield savings account and make transfers to your checking account when you need the funds. I use YBAB to budget.
@robynweyeneth1531
@robynweyeneth1531 7 месяцев назад
How did you do it??
@thehomeless_trucker
@thehomeless_trucker 7 месяцев назад
@@robynweyeneth1531 To get a month ahead, it's just about putting any extra funds towards your budget for the next month until your next month's budget is full before the 1st. This will likely take at least a few months to do and you'd just repeat that to get two months ahead. If you have a solid emergency fund, you can relocate some of those dollars to get 1-2 months ahead in your budget. I actually budget into the next month using YNAB (youneedabudget), but many just have a "next month" category and put thr extra funds into that until the next month rolls over and then they budget those funds for that month. You aren't actually prepaying your bills, you just have the funds in your account available.

I totally understand the parking-your-car-in-a-city situation! I live in LA and I refused to consider any apartments that do not have a parking option (which is a lot!). there's nothing worse than coming home from a long day of work and circling around until you find a parking spot, remembering to move your car on street cleaning days to avoid getting a parking ticket, the fear of vandalism and theft etc! the extra money is so worth your peace of mind 🚙🤸‍♀

Congrats on finishing off 2023 strong Zoe. I've been watching every single video of yours lately and I am inspired to be on this budgeting/financial freedom journey with you. Thank you for your videos. I wanna ask do you put your emergency fund in a high interest saving account so you can access right away when needed, or do you put it to investing like TFSA? and is it better to have separate accounts for each of these funds (emergency and sinking funds)? Hoping to see more videos from you in 2024 xoxo

I loved what you said about being grateful for accomplishing goals you set. I went through a personal struggle earlier this year bc my work prob won’t give any raises forever bc I’m considered top of my band when I was hired and felt resentment and also probably a little bit disappointed I didn’t achieve a raise, but realized growth doesn’t have to be constant or exponential. I still saved and earned $400k net (from income and interest and investments) from last year which is something to be proud of and there’s no buts or pressure to do better. Wanting to always one up yourself creates needless pressure on yourself. My goals both financial and personal is to do what I did this year and previous years, which is to put mental and physical health first, spend on things that help that and then save and invest the rest. I didn’t even set a number bc it’s not helpful to put a number at this point in my saving career and just working to enjoy, be content and proud of myself.

commenting again 😂 sometimes I feel like we are the same person because I also feel that way about my emergency fund - i never wanted to dip into it because what if a BIGGER emergency comes up before I can replenish it?! now i have a separate "life happens" fund I use for unexpected situations that don't really feel like an emergency. this makes me feel better saving my EF for bigger issues such as health-related or job loss.

New goal for 2024 is to help my mom outta debt asap! 😃 On the topic of your beautiful Maggie, I think you should keep a cash sinking fund of 500, then put the rest into a separate hysa , but just obviously keep money for food, toys and treats monthly (that's what my sister does, and it works out 😀) loved tgis video, new subscriber here! 🤍
