Achieving a Guinness World Record is an impressive accomplishment. We followed the team and the FLIRT H2 on their mission to set a new record last month in Pueblo, CO for the longest distance traveled by a hydrogen passenger train without refueling.
From early mornings to night drives and reaching exciting milestones along the way, this experience brought together our amazing team, who demonstrated great team work and perseverance. This achievement is a testament to the reliability of our innovative products and state-of-the-art technology. Congratulations to everyone involved!

What is the use of this? at 10eu a kg, just electrifying the track will be more cost efficient in only a couple of years at best.. Also going thousands of miles on a single tank of hydrogen is just a question of bringing more hydrogen.. If possible liquified.. Its like the car going the furtherst on a single tank of gas, when its carrying a fuel bowser..

In the EU a battery train usually makes more sense for small branch lines because they can recharge when they reach the mainline and there is electric ovehead infrastructure. In the U.S. there are vast parts of the country where there is no electric overhead anywhere nearby, so minor branch lines might choose hydrogen instead of battery trains depending on what their use case is. From the video, the world record for a battery train is 220 km, while the world record for hydrogen is 2803 km.

Rail corporation CEOs want to show quarterly profit and get big bonuses. Electrification and proper maintenance cuts into those profits. Granted RoI on Electrification is 2 to 5 years but the dont have the spine to justify the lesser profits even until then. Plus they don't give a squat about the environment.

Little to no info, it seems the train was driving very slow like 60km/h also very constant speed and ideaal climate conditions so in real life you can easily divide it by 4 …

The 'Arrow' service this set is intended for is only nine miles long, so that amount of distance on a single tank is pretty significant. Still can't beat overhead wires though.

Does a hydrogen train become lighter or heavier when tanks are full?
@obelic71

liquid hydrogen has a higher mass then air only gassious hydrogen is lighter then air.
@Tealice1

@@obelic71 At normal pressure levels, yes. If hydrogen is carried in tanks, it's usually compressed to a point where it's far more dense than air.

@@Tealice1 Correct and most hydrogen carried in tank is in liguid form. Those tanks need to resist the -252 Celcius storage temperature.

@@obelic71 And still at cryogenic temperatures the pressure is significant, and liquid H2 only achieves 8.5 megajoules per liter while diesel is 35.8 MJ per liter.
@obelic71
@obelic71 2 месяца назад
@@ElectricNed Diesel for Ships, trains and heavy industry is not easy to replace. The ease of use, storage and availlable infrastructure makes it very hard to replace. Also most industrial Hydrogen today is refined from natural gas. Using liquid natural gas as a fuel directly would make more sense then convert it to hydrogen and then use it as a fuel. Only when hydrogen is produced by nuclear , wind, water and solar from water it becomes the green energy.they claim today.

Sadly the first European tender last year to purchase hydrogen powered multple units didn't result in any offers from the industry. They are still in the R&D fase. New battery powered multiple units from Stadler are for this decade the only solution sofar to replace the current Diesel-electric Stadler DMU's

@@damianoandreaarrigoni4401Battery trains are mostly for use on lines that have too limited traffic to be worth it to fully electrify. Typically, many secondary lines in Europe now purchase battery electric multiple unit trains to replace their DMU's. Of course, some overhead wires are still put up as "charging islands", but you save a lot of money by only partially electrifying the lines and running most of the trip on battery. For these lower traffic lines, it's not a choice between battery trains or overhead lines, it's a choice between battery trains, diesel, or shutting the line down. And say whatever you want about batteries, they are still a lot better for the environment than fossil fuels.
