Shyam Nepali was born into a prominent family of Gandharva, a centuries-old musician caste in Nepal known for bringing news and entertainment from village to village. Now based in Boston, he co-founded the Himalayan Heritage Band, a group of virtuosic musicians and teachers representing the city’s Himalayan Heritage Cultural Academy. Like his father and grandfather before him, Shyam sings and accompanies himself on a bowed string instrument called a sarangi. “Pokhara ko Phewa Taal,” Shyam’s original composition performed here, is an ode to beautiful Lake Phewa in the famed Nepalese city of Pokhara, and reflects on how the Gandharva’s age-old role of bringing people together is especially relevant to this moment.
