Refurbished BMW R1200RT Top Case : DIY Color Matching Repaint

If you have a 2014-Current BMW RT, but don't want to spend a small fortune for a new BMW top case, the older style models will fit and are less expensive. I found a used one and was able to clean it up, paint it, and re-key it to match the rest of my 2015 BMW R1200RT. I itemized the total cost below.
Used 49 Liter case from Facebook Marketplace: $237.02 (includes shipping and tax)
Paint and clearcoat from www.66autocolor.com/ : $72.69 (includes shipping)
Painting supplies like tape, respirator, sandpaper, etc: Less than $50 YMMV depending on what you have on hand.
BMW Sport Case Lock Cylinder Kit (51 25 7 698 204) from Ebay: $62.06 (includes shipping and tax)
Total: $421.77

Excellent video. I just did my side paniers. They were in pretty bad shape so I sanded the paniers with progressively finer sandpaper all the way to 800 then cleaned thoroughly, 2 coats of primer, two coats of colour-matched top-coat (eBay) and a coat of clear lacquer. Not cheap, but looks brand new.

@@beemrdon52 The primer was £8.99 and the colour-coded aerosol was £16.45 (both 400ml so I needed two of each)

That final conclusion made me a little sentimental… but I totally agree with you: he’s spirit lives on :) (But I certainly hope we’re wrong and that guy had just changed bikes though…)

Tip. I was able to remove emblem with the adhesive still on so it could be reattached and no adhesive left behind. Let case sit in sun and GENTLY work off with small screws driver. Didn’t leave a single mark

Not sure. If you’re looking for an older model like mine, the used market is probably your best choice. Or look for a place that sells salvaged parts if you just need the bottom. You could also try searching by the part number for the bottom piece. You might get lucky and find one at a dealer.

Yeah, you should have used the satin finish. Still is a good 5 foot/5mph paint job. Nobody will notice it in passing. Even if you are stopped, not that bad, and having it color matched makes a huge difference vs the original color. Did you ever re-do it, or just realized it is good enough? I have the same case on my K1600, and the color is just a touch off, not enough to worry about it though. I like your floor mat idea though, the previous owner put in some of that anti-slide grip stuff, but always ends up getting bunched up. I think I will copy this idea from you for mine.

I ended up selling the bike to my dad, but after some time in the sun and a bit of road grime, he said it looks fine.

Strange usa red is not the same as in Europe mine is Mars red a very strange paint the top coat has glitter in it , they had a hard time trying to get it close.

That is strange. I thought they just did one batch of colors each year for all markets. But leave it to BMW to make things needlessly complicated.

You need to now use 4000 sand paper, and after that polishing paste. Then it will look original. I have done it on my and the results are shocking

Simply try it under the section where pillion seat cushions is installed. Use 4000 sand paper and good polishing paste. You will see the difference

if you're relying on a *SILVER* box to keep you visible, you might as well be dead.... Silver is invisible in any form of incliment weather.

You are overdoing it. The lid cover can be removed easily without removing the hinges. Just remove the BMW-logo or brake light if attached and the 5 screws for the backrest. Then all you have to do is gently lift off the cover. Easy peasy!
