Putting the DoAll 14 inch to work on Kurt Vises..
Note1: The owner did not want me to grind the bases.. They were stoned though.
Note2: Yes I was taking somewhat unconventional big cuts. I take what Don Bailey - CEO - Suburban Tool, Inc says seriously... " If you need to take off 10, 15 or 20 thousands off, take it off!" In other words don't mess around :)
Don says that in this video. • Surface Grinder Basics...

That's creative using your Workshop door as a table stop on the grinder

We're going to need a smaller door :)

That's Why You Grind Them Both at the Same Time - Make's it Easier so They Are the Same Height...Stay Safe...

If your grinder’s only large enough to hold one chuck rough grind two or more to the same height leaving .002 for finishing. Now, dress the wheel (not too fine) and finish grind the vises at the same setting with plenty of coolant.

And you should have started grinding the bottom first because of the hold down screws of over tightened can warp the bottom.

The owner didn’t want to 🤷‍♂️

Doing the bottoms would have been better, but for what I need I didn't want to take up too much of Steve's time. These are for use in high school robotics. Tolerances are not tight. All in all, it was a fun little project that improved these old vises.

Man that is a nice machine! I almost bought a smaller grinder but that would just take up the rest of my space. I’d have no room left to work on the race car. I have the Bridgeport and a tire machine in that part of the garage and the Clausing is on the other side. I’d really like to get one

You can always put the grinder into the trunk of the race car until you finish it :)

How much capital does Pete's 24H Bail Bonds have - I know a guy that needs a rather large bond... like 475 million large...

Lets see 10% of 475 million is .......... I'll have to get a loan from Don to cover it :)

From the sparks being white the vise is cast steel,yellow sparks would be cast iron ?

Agee, plus you know how to spell vise!
@ellieprice363

The white sparks were coming from the steel mounting block which is bolted to the cast iron base.

To bring the wheel down accurately it is easier to hand turn the center of the wheel.

Steve, Those little wavy lines in the grind appear to be a combination of several things. 1 being the grind speed feed over the material is too fast. 2 the wheel and adapter hub are not finely balanced. The slower you feed across the material with a poorly balanced wheel, the closer together the waves appear to be. The faster the feed across, the further apart. With a balanced hub/wheel, there should be NO waves at all. Just saying. Don.........(the other one...LOL)
@10swatkins
@10swatkins 4 месяца назад
The wild card is the wheel and balance.... I just found a balancer large enough to handle the 14" wheels and then we can get everything ship shape.....

Didn’t you just run a diamond dresser on the wheel and adjust the wheel height so now your numbers are wrong you should have read dial marking like on the lathe or Bridgeport wheels .so now you need to measure top to mag check and compare to 2nd vise to be the same.

IF I remember, I finished the first vise, got out the planer gauge and measured the height of the table to the bottom of the stone, as a precaution to save that measurement if anything went wrong or I needed to dress the wheel, then marked the down feed wheel with a mark, on the blue tape, as to that setting then raised the wheel and started grinding down to the mark on the wheel. That should have been very close to the grind on the first one and as this was only the tops of the vises the owner did not want me to go any farther.. IF I dressed the wheel I should not have and should have set the wheel with the planer gauge then remarked the wheel.

@@10swatkinsI figured that was what the rolling papers were for,, to make sure the vise was stoned.

If you dress the wheel would not the gap be more for the the dia of wheel from dressing
@10swatkins
@10swatkins 4 месяца назад
Yes,, Does not matter as you dress then move the wheel down...Finish to dimension after you dress... Dressing seems to be really important.
