Refused - Freedom! ALBUM REVIEW 

Buddha once said, "Expecting subsequent albums to reach the heights of The Shape of Punk to Come, can only lead to disappointment and suffering."

The Shape of Punk to Come was walk-off home run for Refused. Trying to match or top that is a near-impossible task.

Totally disagree with this review. You acknowledge the difficulty in reviewing this comeback album but then you seem to be unable to listen to it as its own entity. I am loving it.

I thought it was a fun listen. Certainly not their best work, but I didn't come into "Freedom!" expecting another "The Shape of Punk to Come". The hard rock influences, on top of some more dance-y rhythms, I thought added a little interesting twist to Refused's sound. I understand though why some fans won't enjoy this record. "Freedom!" is a decent to strong 7 for me at the moment. That may change with more listens.

Thought Is Blood & Dawkins Christ are sick tracks in my opinion. Ofc nothing's gonna be close to SOPTC as it's one of the greatest albums of all time. Still, Refused & Ghost single-handedly makes me proud of being a Swede!

I was actually really pleased with this album. It's Refused, but something out of left field. Comparing this album to their last is like comparing apples to oranges. To me, this sounded like a band not wanting their last effort to haunt them for the rest of their lives. I was a little thrown off with the bridge of War on the Palaces sounding like 81 AC/DC

I think people are expecting too much from Refused. I think what they have done is an awesome album. The only way to better their last album would be to do more of the same but then you'd all complain about that. I suggest listen to it for what it is. They have obviously put a lot of effort into it. Its new, fresh, original and Refused. What more do you want..?

I liked it Anthony. It was cheesy at times.. but also really cool at other points to sort of illuminate that the cheese was more of a style choice they did to create a specific anthemic, fun mood, rather than poor/lazy writing. Listening to it with a fun and care-free attitude helps. Great summer jams. Also, I've never really listened to their iconic first record, so I had no expectations. I'd recommend it to any rock fan :)

I haven't listened to the album yet but maybe the singer's time spent in the group INVSN might be worth mentioning. Might have something to do with where his head's at and song writing recently.

i get where you're coming from but somehow i've come to like it a lot. first two rounds were a bit odd, but the longer you listen to it, the more better it gets. It really grows on you, which i can remember was the same with TSoPTC. But it's not as good as SoPtC.

Will you review new the internet album?

I didn't really get a bad taste from the aesthetic the same way as you did, but then I also: 1) Like me some cheeseball 80s rock flourishes and dance riffs. 2) Never heard a Refused album before. So I gave it a 7.5. Heh, I had fun with it. Got a bit tired in the later part of the first quarter, but I was enjoying myself with the increasingly goofy mix of styles and moods by the end.

It's not awful. If I hadn't seen them shred a tiny record shop full of sweaty maniacs on a "The Shape Of..." tour, I might be into this. It's just a new band with a new vibe.

Mostly agree with Anthony. Album felt really short. There were only three tracks i liked: Elektra, Francafrique, and Servants of Death. But those latter two tracks are kinda cheesy, especially the kid vocals. I didn't really listen to Refused before this, but Elektra got me really interested. Could've been great. Reminded me of Gang of Four

I'm surprised that you've never reviewed an o'brother album.

I personally loved this album for pretty much all the reason your say you dislike it. I like rock n roll and 'classic rock' bands like Aerosmith. Also, I love how it doesn't sound a lot like Refused when they were initially going, because otherwise it would've just sounded like they were chasing golden days. And as for 'left hooks' The Shape Of Punk To Come was full of them and helped made it amazing. Yeah, this album didn't have as many or even did them as well but you never knew what to expect with this record and in an age where you can assume what band's next record is going to sound like, then 9/10 times be correct, I find it refreshing that one of my favourite bands ever can take me by surprise nearly two decades out of the game.

As crazy as someone may call me, I think Enter Shikari's most recent album did a better job of picking up and channeling what "TSOPTC" did than Refused's new album has. I'm not saying it was the prodigal son and DID pick up exactly, I just think it did a fundamentally better job at doing that than the new Refused album

You need to do a proper review of the shape of punk

I didn't enjoy it I listened to it a couple times in denial, but the guitar is just lacking. Maybe it's just because it does t sound like the other albums I grew to love. Overall I'd say accurate review.

man, oh man, could not disagree more, lol. i'll be honest, i stayed away from this album for a long time because i don't trust comeback albums, i've been hurt too many times. but i am glad i finally gave it a try because there is a lot to love on this album. it's so funny that when the shape of punk to come was released it was rejected by the fans because it wasn't songs to fan the flames of discontent, and then when freedom was released it was rejected for not being the shape of punk to come. it's very strange to suggest that anything in here sounds like it's from the 80s. 70s absolutely, but this has way more soul than anything the 80s had. guitar work in here is great. The middle section of Thought is Blood is my favorite thing Refused has done. The vocals are still extremely aggressive while being more melodic and less abrasive than their old albums. i also think it's weird to criticize the lyrics as being "sensationalist" and "melodramatic" if you're comparing this record to previous records, that's like... their thing. "i've got a bone to pick with capitalism, and a few to break" "I'd rather be dead, than alive by your oppression" "the hunter dying in his trap" i mean, yeah, if you only listen to new noise, you might be surprised that they sing about more than just dancing to the wrong songs, and yeah, a lot of the time, it's over the top.

Oh my god, this sucks, I hope I like it better.
