In the United States, with the presidential campaign well underway, the brand-new biopic "Shirley" spotlights the remarkable story of a presidential candidate and political trailblazer. Shirley Chisholm was the first Black woman elected to Congress, and in 1972 became the first to run for president. She often was the only woman in the room, and her campaign was met with some resistance. But these issues never slowed her down. Academy Award-winning actor and director Regina King takes on the challenge of portraying this American icon. She joins Michel Martin to talk about it.

Shirley Chisholm gave the commencement address at my graduation from The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington in 1987 - she was unforgettable! ❤❤❤

Regina King even still pronounces certain words in the way Shirley Chisholm used to say them. Influencing, even from the grave!

How in the world is it that no one knew about Shirley Chisholm? She was larger than life. But then I’m 74. She was a person of another era. Regina King was brilliant. Shirley Chisholm had an accent and a lisp. Her voice was unique . But it was her courage, heart, and intellect that made her larger than life. I saw the movie and will watch it again. Thank you Regina King. ❤you too!

As a DC youth during Rep. Chisholm's rise, can't wait to see this in general release. Growing up without voting representation was a big turnoff, but fueled work later on and in recent years. Regina King has all the right ideas; we vote for youth's future. Motivating youth to vote today - right now - brings them and their clarity onboard for caring out space to inhabit that future. Rockthevote.

I well remember Shirley Chisolm. I'm glad that someone made a film about her. Girls and women have always needed to see women role models, who could demonstrate what we could be. She was a good role model for all women, including white women like me. When I was growing up in the 1950's, women had few role models, so we could dream of being a teacher or a nurse. So many doors were closed to us back then. Thanks for covering this film.

She wasn't Black American. She was of West Indian descent.

She was also a Quaker, a member of Delta Sigma Theta and endorsed by the Black Panther Party - hence Food Stamp legislation. Shirley was a watershed in American politics.

*Those movies about Black historical icons always give you the politically watered-down, white-liberal acceptable, Kumbaya feel-good, 'Lifetime' TV channel, Oprah Winfrey approved version of those African American historical icons. And then if that's not bad enough, these movies either totally make-up people who never existed in the lives if those icons, or omit critically important people who did!... I wonder if the actual "hero" of this movie will be white, like so many movies about POC* ?
