This video is about looking after your mental health and staying happy in your NHS job.
I want to encourage people who have realised this problem, to find the solution and get back on track. It is good to know your difficulties but it is more important to be able to sort the right solutions.
I have been reading about how life sucks in the UK , financial difficulties in the UK , regrets about moving to the UK , better salary in USA and Australia, difficulty with the consultants and registrars, problems with nurses, not able to get approval for holidays etc.
My talk will help you clear your thoughts as I go through THREE major aspects of this issue.
1. First of all think of the reasons which made you to come to the UK and give you credit for successfully moving to this country. Revisit your goals and re-evaluate your situation. As an IMG I would imagine that most of us would agree that we moved to this country for the following reasons: living and working in a developed country , International experience, better education for children, safety and progressive society and finally get into training to become a consultant.
IT IS REALLY IMPORTANT TO KNOW YOUR REAL GOALS
2. MOVING ABROAD can be so over whelming-
It’s a lot of changing happening at once (professionally and personally), moving away from friends and family support circle, stuck in a huge learning curve, your worse self can become apparent- When you put yourself through the stress of change and the vulnerability of living without your support system you might feel edgy, easily triggered, and annoyed with everyone and everything.
3. Solutions;
Recognize your efforts- in the beginning it can be 24/7- working hard to prove yourself at work- and again working even harder at home to manage the necessities- all the formalities- housing, rent, commute, car, schools, grocery, paperwork, the list goes on. To be honest your trajectory of success is far higher than those who lived in the same place or same job for years without taking these big risks. Pin down exactly what are the greatest stressors- a person/rota-not having enough break- household chores. Sit down and plan- plan and plan- (spend time to understand rota, understand importance of taking one or two days off here and there, relax with family, order take away, eat light food, do not stress on extensive home cooked meals, go out on a walk, etc). Try to make friends. Increase your resilience- honestly- smile more and ask more . Try to think from different perspectives- nothing is good or black- find shades of happiness in every one that you work with. Please stay away from negative people- who complain about everything.
